Abstract: An amplifier having multiple gain modes comprises a plurality of cascoded input transistors connected to an input and arranged in parallel, a degeneration stage connected to the input transistors and having a variable impedance, and switching means for switching between different modes of the amplifier by switching off one or more of the input transistors and varying the impedance of the degeneration stage.
Abstract: A multi-mode, preferably dual mode, radio frequency identification (RFID) tag is adapted for automatic detection of whether a RFID reader located within communication range of the RFID tag is transmitting a continuous wave (CW) or modulated wave types of RF signal, and accordingly, mandating a response from the tag in read-only (RO) mode or read/write (R/W) mode, respectively. The tag includes means for designating one of the RO and R/W operating modes as a default mode of the tag, and for switching the tag from its default mode to its other operating mode, and vice versa, according to a rule for determining the frequency of occurrence of a selected event related to signal type of the reader. A device-implemented method of this automatic detection, and a method of fabricating the tag, are also disclosed.

Abstract: The present invention relates to methods for manufacturing paper or paperboard with improved strength, the methods comprising the addition of the reaction product of a cationic polyacrylamide and an aqueous aldehyde generating compound or a glyoxal releasing compound, or glyoxal itself, prepared at the mill site at high concentrations, then diluted and added into a fiber furnish prior to forming or drying of the paper or paperboard sheet.
Abstract: An opening and closing apparatus having an opening and closing body, a drive portion, a control portion, and a detecting device is disclosed. The detecting device has a sensor portion for detecting the capacitance between the sensor portion and an object that is in the proximity of the sensor portion or is contacting the sensor portion. The detecting device detects that the object is in the proximity of the sensor portion or is contacting the sensor portion based on the capacitance detected by the sensor portion. If the detecting device detects contact of the object with the sensor portion when the opening and closing body is not being moved, the control portion controls the drive portion to start opening the opening and closing body. If the detecting device detects that the object is in the proximity of the sensor portion when the opening and closing body is being closed, the control portion controls the drive portion to stop or reverse the movement of the opening and closing body.
Abstract: Distance to a modulated backscatter tag is measured with a RFID reader that measures changes in phase with frequency of modulated backscattered RF signals. Measured distances are linked to a specific tag. The effects of other sources of reflected and interfering signals are mitigated. The techniques eliminate the need for high RF bandwidth used in time-of-flight methods, and may be used with linear, limiting or other types of amplifiers in the reader receiver. Unambiguous distance to a tag may be found using the derivative of phase with RF frequency of the modulated signal backscattered by a tag. The distance to a tag can be measured with an accuracy on the order of a centimeter. The techniques utilize the characteristics of cooperative backscatter tags (transponders, labels, etc.). New readers implement the techniques which may use unmodified tags.
Abstract: A computer 12 of an image processing apparatus 11 acquires ultrasound B-mode images of consecutive frames to estimate a carotid artery wall at a carotid artery minor axis cross section included in an ultrasound B-mode image of a predetermined frame. The computer 12 also uses, as a template image, the ultrasound B-mode image, which includes the estimated carotid artery wall and surrounding tissues of the carotid artery wall and estimates the size of the diameter of the carotid artery wall so as to minimize a margin of error between a transformed template image, which is created by transforming the template image, and the acquired ultrasound B-mode image of each frame, thereby acquiring the time change of the carotid artery wall.
Abstract: An apparatus to facilitate field assessment of static structure sites to provide data in a predetermined format acceptable to a taxing authority, including a personal computing device having a graphic display screen, a user interface, and application software. The user interface is arranged to accept alphanumeric data provided by a user of the apparatus and also accept graphic input from the user representative of structural features of the static structure. The application software is arranged to provide a real-time display on the graphic display screen of dimensional data associated with the graphic inputs as they are entered by the user. The application software is also arranged to compute dimensional attributes of enclosed polygons resulting from the graphic input by the user.

Abstract: A method for repairing pulmonary air leaks in a lung residing in a chest cavity and having an intake air stream and an outer surface is disclosed. An exemplary method comprises: introducing a first component of a biphasic sealant component as a liquid into the intake air stream of the damaged lung; ensuring that there is a pressure differential between the intake air stream and the outer surface of the lung; and introducing a second component of a biphasic sealant component into the chest cavity. The first sealant component collects at the air leak site and forms a sealant in combination with the second sealant component.
Abstract: A measuring instrument (100) for measuring the properties of a sample (10) with a multitude of particles (11), including a spectroscopy device (20) to measure spectroscopic properties of the sample, and a weighing device (30) to measure the mass of the sample. Also described is a method for measuring the properties of a sample (10) with a multitude of particles (11).
Abstract: A method of screening an antioxidant for potency and/or toxicity in vitro, the method includes contacting the antioxidant with a model system containing a sterol superlattice formation capable of generating a detectable signal, wherein the detectable signal changes in a parameter representative of an integrity of the sterol superlattice formation; and detecting and/or measuring disruption of the sterol superlattice formation, wherein the disruption is caused by the insertion of the antioxidant into membranes and thereby screening the antioxidant for potency and/or toxicity.

Abstract: A method of reducing d.c. offset comprises comparing the a first variable signal with a second variable signal, producing a control signal in dependence upon the comparison, providing the control signal to a charge pump for generation of a feedback signal, and varying the first signal and/or the second signal in dependence upon the feedback signal thereby reducing any difference between the d.c. level of the first signal and the d.c. level of the second signal.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for stereoselective synthesis of substituted sulfoxides either as a single enantiomer or in an enantiomerically enriched form. Thus, 5-methoxy-2-[[(4-methoxy-3,5-dimethyl-2-pyridinyl)methyl]thio]-1H-benzimidazole is reacted with (R)-camphorsulfonyl chloride to form a mixture of 1-(R)-camphorsulfonyl-5- (and 6-)methoxy-2-[(3,5-dimethyl-4-methoxy-2-pyridyl)methylthio]-1H-benzimidazole, oxidized to obtain a diastereomeric excess of 1-(R)-camphorsulfonyl-(5- and 6-)-methoxy-2-[(3,5-dimethyl-4-methoxy-2-pyridyl)methyl-(S)-sulfinyl]-1H-benzimidazole over 1-(R)-camphorsulfonyl-(5- and 6-)-methoxy-2-[(3,5-dimethyl-4-methoxy-2-pyridyl)methyl-(R)-sulfinyl]-1H-benzimidazole, the diastereomers are separated by fractional crystallization and the separated 1-(R)-camphorsulfonyl-(5- and 6-)-methoxy-2-[(3,5-dimethyl-4-methoxy-2-pyridyl)methyl-(S)-sulfinyl]-1H-benzimidazole is deprotected to give esomeprazole.

Abstract: An ambidextrous magazine catch mechanism for a pistol includes a button in the pistol frame. The button has a W-shaped camming surface. A magazine has a catch aperture. A catch includes two upwardly disposed legs connected to one another. A first leg has a tooth to mate with the catch aperture. The first and second legs form a spring having an equilibrium position. When the first leg is pressed toward the second leg, an outward force on the first leg biases the catch toward the equilibrium position. The first leg has a W-shaped camming surface to mate with the camming surface of the button. The button has a neutral position, and a first and second depressed position. In the neutral position, the camming surface of the button mates with the camming surface of the first leg and the tooth is engaged in the aperture to secure the magazine.
