  • Patent number: 6420705
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the inspection of a substrate provides consistent detection of defects such as cracks, differentiates between different types of defects, and, does not excessively heat the substrate. An infrared radiating source produces infrared energy which illuminates the substrate in a uniform manner at an incident angle. An infrared camera collects a portion of the infrared light which is reflected from the substrate. An image is created from the collected light which includes indicia of the defect. The image is examined as the incident angle is varied for changes in the appearance of the indicia.

  • Patent number: 6359212
Abstract: A method for determining the susceptibility of solar cell cover glass or second surface mirror to ultraviolet (UV) degradation comprises the steps of illuminating the solar cell cover glass with ultra violet light at a preselected illumination angle where the solar cell cover glass reflects a portion of the ultraviolet light; measuring the reflected portion of the ultraviolet light; and, characterizing the propensity of the cover glass or contaminate layer on a second surface mirror to degradation as a function of the reflectance. The process results in an improvement of the long-term power output of solar cells by screening out cover glasses that have a propensity to darken under solar-equivalent UV exposure and thus maintaining optical transparency arising from increased solar absorption in darkened cover glass. The process will additionally result in decreased contaminant levels on thermal control surfaces and less on-orbit degradation.

  • Patent number: 6335108
Abstract: An implant patterned superconductive device and a method for indirect implant-patterning of oxide superconducting materials is provided. The method forms a device having an oxide superconducting layer on a substrate, deposits a passivation layer atop the oxide superconducting layer, and implants chemical impurities in a selected portion of the superconducting layer through the passivation layer. This modifies the conductivity of the selected portion of the oxide superconducting layer and electrically isolates the selected portion from the non-selected portion of the oxide superconducting layer. The passivation layer is made of a material less susceptible to implant damage than the oxide superconducting layer to allow inhibition of the oxide superconducting layer while protecting the crystalline structure of the top surface of the oxide superconducting layer and keeping it planarized.

  • Patent number: 6259335
Abstract: An umbrella-shaped matching network (10, 14, 16) for matching phase and impedance in a power amplifier (2). The matching network (10, 14, 16) employs rounded corners (22). The rounded corners (22) reduce microwave signal scattering losses, because they are less prone to signal radiation than square corner power combining networks. The matching network (10, 14, 16) includes slits (24) defining separated arms (26). The slits (24) are positioned in such a way that they provide phase and amplitude balance for the signal presented to the amplifiers (2). The slits (24) also prevent current from traveling transversely.

  • Patent number: 6240075
Abstract: A satellite communication system which performs switching on data cells. A switch (80) receives the data cells at a set of input ports (IP1-IP128) and directs them to a set of output ports (OP1-OP128). In order to arbitrate input data cells contending for the same output port, decision factor codes and routing codes are serially conducted to input registers (210), and a pseudo-random sequence code is appended. The combined codes are ordered by routing code in a decoder (220). The code with the highest decision factor code is selected in one or more determinators (230 and 240). The selected code is identified by a bit in a result register (250).
