  • Patent number: 5501671
Abstract: A blood containment, visualization and tactile confirmation device is provided for use with a vascular entry needle. The device includes a visualization channel and/or a complaint outer wall portion which indicates whether a needle connected to the device has entered a selected blood vessel. The visualization channel is vented to the outside to allow displaced air to escape, but has a gas permeable member to prevent blood from escaping. The visualization channel may have one, two, or more stages, with a first stage chamber which indicates initial penetration of a selected blood vessel, and a second stage chamber which fills more slowly and indicates that the needle remains positioned within the blood vessel. A third stage chamber with entrapped air which compresses slightly due to the heartbeat may also be used. Preferably, a compliant outer wall portion pulses with changes in blood pressure, thereby providing a tactile indication that the needle tip is properly positioned.

  • Patent number: 5415256
Abstract: A torque-limiting clutch brake is provided that has an inner collar which splines to a transmission gearbox input shaft. An intermediate coupling member fits around and engages the inner collar. A friction generating resilient wave washer is disposed between the intermediate coupling member and an outer housing. The outer housing includes two covers, within which the components are contained and the resilient wave washer is partially compressed. Friction generated by the resilient wave washer conditionally couples the outer housing to the intermediate coupling member and inner collar until torque on the device exceeds a certain threshold, at which point the clutch brake slips to prevent damage. The components are made up of separable semicircular sections which can be split apart to facilitate removal and installation of the clutch brake without lowering and disassembling the vehicle transmission.

  • Patent number: 5397517
Abstract: A lightweight contoured base for a seat cushion is produced by first forming a shaped lightweight foam core with a void corresponding to the ischial tuberosities of a user and then forming a sandwich assembly by placing a layer of foam or foamable material against both upper and lower surfaces of the shaped lightweight foam core to form a sandwich assembly. The sandwich assembly is then molded to produce the finished contoured base for a seat cushion.

  • Patent number: 5362543
Abstract: Pressure-compensating pads such as seats or cushions used in wheelchairs, can be filled with a flowable, pressure-compensating composition comprising a major portion of silicone fluid, a minor portion of amide thickener which is essentially insoluble in said silicone fluid and microballoons. The resulting compositions are particularly characterized by their ability to flow in response to a continuously applied pressure, yet to maintain their shape and position in the absence of applied pressure, and are further characterized by stable viscosity at temperatures generally associated with the presence of the human body and excellent fire retardant properties. The composition may also contain flame-retardant.

Abstract: A wound clotting device includes a tubular portion having a proximal end, a distal end and a lumen extending therebetween, an inflatable membrane associated with the distal end of the tubular portion and being moveable between a retracted position and an inflated position to form a balloon-like projection at the distal end when moved to the inflated position for treating a wound. A method for treating a wound by providing a wound-treating device, positioning the device in a location near the wound, moving an inflation membrane of the wound treating device to an inflated position near the wound, and removing the treating device is described. Finally, an alternate wound treating device having an inflatable membrane which is releasably carried at the distal end of the tubular portion and which is expelled to treat the wound is also described.

  • Patent number: 5329877
Abstract: The watering valve (10) according to the invention is designed for feeding of water to the chickens according to their need for water in such a way that a flow restriction section (27) which is formed between an upper pin (16) and a part of the housing (12) associated therewith is variable in order to set different water flow rates. For this purpose, the upper pin (16) is provided with portions (25, 26) of different diameters. A variation of the relative position of this upper pin (16) in the housing (12) makes it possible to enlarge or reduce this flow restriction section (27). Accordingly, a smaller or greater quantity of water (per unit of time) can flow out of the watering valve.

  • Patent number: 5241832
Abstract: A system for compressing gas that changes ambient atmosphere conditions which uses a hermetic compressor, a condenser to receive compressed gas from the compressor and condense it, a liquid receiver to store the condensed gas, an expansion valve to vaporize the condensed gas and an evaporator which interacts with the ambient atmosphere. Isolating devices are used to isolate the compressor from the other parts of the system. A power invertor which changes the direct current to alternating current used with the isolating devices enable the use of a hermetic compressor in a direct current environment. Also included are cooling devices that use the cool internal vapor and the cool water formed on the outside of the evaporator to cool the compressor and its components.

  • Patent number: 5231949
Abstract: This invention is an improved boat hull design for stable operation as a planing-type hull in a wide range of water conditions. The hull is comprised of a substantially V-shaped central hull portion and a pair of adjacent side floats, one on each side of the central hull. The inner walls of the side floats are substantially vertical, and the floats are stepped upwardly at approximately midships, such that the rear portion of the side floats is substantially horizontal, or parallel to the plane of the water surface. At least one pair of flat surfaces are formed along the bottom portion of the hull positioned at the intersection of lowermost strakes and steps formed on each side of the hull, so as to provide substantially improved stability and attitude when running at high speed on rough water. A dihedral tunnel is formed by the concavely-curved surfaces of the central hull in combination with the inner walls of the side floats.
