  • Patent number: 4600202
Abstract: A brush-type seal between machine components in relative motion one with respect to the other, of which at least one member rotates, in which the strands or bristles consist of composite fibers designed for good thermal conductivity in at least portions of their surface and at least the core has flexible, elastic properties. The plurality of bristles are made of combinations of glass and metal or ceramic or plastic materials and various manufacturing processes and arrangements may be used. The fibers are densely combined, massed, bundled or associated otherwise, preferably radially retained or arranged to advantage in annular brushes. The brush seals such as fluid seals are arranged in a particular application on the stator or rotor of a machine, preferably a turbomachine. This brush-type seal is applicable to seal two chambers under different pressure.

  • Patent number: 4599918
Abstract: A control system for a motor vehicle drive unit consisting of reciprocating piston engine and of a transmission, in which the drive unit is so controlled that the engine power corresponding to the respective drive pedal position lies always as close as possible but below a stored engine output curve; for that purpose, the engine rotational speed, the drive pedal position, and the engaged transmission speed are determined, whose values are fed to a control apparatus which, in addition to the storage device for the engine power function, also contains stored values for the transmission speeds and which determines and controls the optimum transmission speed in several interrogating and comparison cycles.

  • Patent number: 4600954
Abstract: An installation for recording binary signals on a magnetic information carrier, in which a needle pulse of one polarity is applied to a recording magnetic head during each change of the signals to be recorded from "0" to "1" and a needle pulse of the other polarity is applied during each change from "1" to "0". The installation includes either two multivibrators or a single multivibrators. The output signals of the two multivibrators are applied to the magnetic head by way of an adding circuit whereas the output signal of the single multivibrator is applied to the magnetic head by way of a logic circuit which reverses the current direction corresponding to the existing data signal. Additionally, an installation for the recovery of binary signals recorded on a magnetic information carrier determines the zero passage of the read-out signal and includes three comparators which compare the read-out signal with predetermined threshold voltages.

  • Patent number: 4598672
Abstract: An internal combustion engine has means for stabilizing the position of a yoke and piston during the reciprocating movement. A pressure source transmits a force to one side of yoke to maintain the yoke in constant contact with a bearing surface on the wall of the crankcase, at the same time, the pressure source causes lubrication to be continually transmitted to a sliding block within the yoke at all positions of the crankshaft to lubricate the bearing between the crank throw and sliding block and the bearings between the sliding block and yoke to minimize wear during extended use. The yoke and piston are further stabilized in their reciprocating motion by a peg and ring configuration, one of which is mounted to the crankcase and the other mounted to the yoke. Twist of the yoke and piston about the cylinder axis is prevented by channels in the crankcase wall within which the yoke edges slide.

  • Patent number: 4598814
Abstract: The invention relates to a retarding conveyor for cargo with an outward-transfer station at one location at least, with a sectionally subdivided, drivable conveying apparatus carrying the pieces of cargo, each section being drivable by an intermediate roller driven by a constantly revolving traction device, this intermediate roller being adjustable from the driving position into an idling position employing a feeler extending into the path of motion of the cargo. Such a retarding conveyor is to be provided with a large stowing volume, as well as a large number of outward-transfer stations through which transfer-out additionally takes place at high velocity.

  • Patent number: 4598604
Abstract: A steering device for motor vehicles, which is adjustable along its longitudinal axis and whose steering column can be telescopically extended and retracted by means of a drive device, the steering column jacket being designed in several parts, one steering column jacket part being fixed to the body and one steering column jacket part being movable relative to the first, and in which adjustment can be introduced into the steering column jacket movable part by means of a coupling element with which a worm gear driven by a drive motor engages. The coupling element consists of a toothed rack located on the periphery of the steering column jacket movable part, a worm gear located with its axis parallel to the rack engaging with the rack and passing through a recess in the steering column jacket fixed part. The engagement angle of the worm gear is so dimensioned that self-locking occurs.

  • Patent number: 4593662
Abstract: An air flow in the combustion space which swirls or rotates about the cylinder longitudinal axis is produced for the fine distribution of the fuel by a correspondingly constructed inlet channel controlled by two inlet valves in a supercharged four-cycle internal combustion engine with direct fuel injection. With a low air mass flow, the rotary movement of the air in the combustion space is only weak and therefore prone to disturbance. An improvement is achieved by a change of the air flow in the inlet channel system. The valve actuation contains, for that purpose, an adjusting mechanism consisting of a piston-cylinder-unit fed with pressure oil, which effects in one operating function an automatic valve clearance compensation and which enables in a second operating function together with a controllable closure device in the pressure oil feed line a stoppage of one of the two inlet valves actuated in unison by the valve actuation.

  • Patent number: 4593525
Abstract: An apparatus and method for operating a piston driven internal combustion engine having an exhaust gas turbocharger, provides for the exhaust gases of the cylinders to be conducted to an afterburner chamber and subsequently to the exhaust gas turbine of the turbocharger when the motor vehicle is coasting, i.e., when the motor vehicle and engine are being driven by the vehicle's inertia, with the ignition for the cylinders being turned off and the charging air being introduced into the afterburner chamber. The noncombusted fuel/air mixture from the cylinders is combusted in the afterburner chamber with the additional charging air to thereby bring the turbocharger to its full output for reacceleration of the engine.
