    Abstract: An optical sensor that includes a light source and a detector is located within a cavity in a polishing pad so as to face the surface that is being polished. Light from the light source is reflected from the surface being polished and the detector detects the reflected light. The electrical signal produced by the detector is conducted to a hub located at the central aperture of the polishing pad. The disposable polishing pad is removably connected, both mechanically and electrically to the hub. The hub contains electronic circuitry that is concerned with supplying power to the optical sensor and with transmitting the electrical signal to a non-rotating station. Several techniques are described for accomplishing these tasks. The system permits continuous monitoring of an optical characteristic of a surface that is being polished, even while the polishing machine is in operation, and permits the end point of the polishing process to be determined.

An automated controller and an automated constricting device may be provided for applying CPR to the recipient in an automated fashion. The automated controller receives the chest compression indication signals from the signaling mechanism, and, in accordance with the chest compression indication signals, controls the force and frequency of constrictions.

    Abstract: A wafer carrier for controlling the edge effect during chemical mechanical planarization. A first bladder is disposed within the retaining ring to control the height of the retaining ring relative to the bottom surface of the wafer carrier. A second bladder is disposed within the carrier such that if the pressure in the bladder is regulated, the amount of force on the edge of the wafer changes. If a polishing process would cause material near the edge of the wafer to be removed at a higher rate than from the rest of the wafer, then the pressure is regulated within the bladder to reduce the force against the edge of the wafer. By reducing the force against the edge of the wafer, material is removed from the front side of the wafer at a uniform rate.

    Abstract: A long-lasting retaining ring for wafer carriers used in chemical mechanical planarization. A groove is disposed around the retaining ring, with the groove opening facing the mounting plate. A ridge is disposed in the groove. A bladder is disposed in the groove and is pressed between the ridge and the mounting plate. Pressure in the bladder can be maintained or adjusted to deform the bladder and thereby force the retaining ring onto the polishing pad as the retaining ring is worn. Prior to adding pressure to the bladder, the ridge forces the bladder to very closely conform to the dimensions of the groove. Thus, during use, bladder deformation is not wasted on conforming the bladder to the groove shape, but instead can be used to force the retaining ring further in the direction of the pad. The ridge thereby increases the distance the retaining ring can move towards the pad.

    Abstract: A system applies cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to a recipient. An automated controller is provided together with a compression device which periodically applies a force to a recipient's thorax under control of the automated controller. A band is adapted to be placed around a portion of the torso of the recipient corresponding to the recipient's thorax. A driver mechanism shortens and lengthens the circumference of the band. By shortening the circumference of the band, radial forces are created acting on at least lateral and anterior portions of the thorax. A translating mechanism may be provided for translating the radial forces to increase the concentration of anterior radial forces acting on the anterior portion of the thorax. The driver mechanism may comprise a tension device for applying a circumference tensile force to the band. The driver mechanism may comprise an electric motor, a pneumatic linear actuator, or a contracting mechanism defining certain portions of the circumference of the band.

    Abstract: A system and method for delivering a drug to a target site within a patient's body. The system and method include a steerable guide catheter and a drug delivery catheter. The steerable guide catheter has a first extension tube and a second extension tube that are joined together and form a shoulder. The delivery catheter has a distal docking segment and a proximal docking segment. The guide catheter is inserted into the patient's body, then the delivery catheter is inserted into the guide catheter. The distal docking segment engages the first extension tube, the proximal docking segment engages the second extension tube, and the shoulder limits the distance the delivery catheter can be inserted into the guide catheter. Also, once the delivery catheter is inserted it can be rotated to attach the helical tip to the target site. The guide catheter also includes a steering mechanism as well as a friction mechanism which controls the tension on the steering mechanism.

    Abstract: A polypectomy device and method which includes a snare cable, a fixed jaw and a moveable jaw. The snare cable is routed through both the fixed jaw and the moveable jaw. The snare cable forms a hoop for encircling the polyp. Shortening the snare cable positions the jaws about the base of the polyp and further shortening the cable closes the jaws. The fixed jaw includes a heating element which cauterizes the base of the polyp. The closing of the jaws and the heating of the heating element cuts and seals the polyp.
