Abstract: A method for making hose including the steps of spiralling plies of thermoplastic tubing over a vulcanizable elastomeric tube where the tubing of successive plies are oppositely spiralled from each other; pressurizing and sealing the tubing; heating the assembly to a temperature lower than the melting point of the tubing; and vulcanizing the elastomeric tube.
Abstract: The method includes filling the hollow interior of a flexible uncured tubular preform with a flowable substantially incompressible material, training the thus filled tubular element about discrete support means which contact a portion of the exterior surface of the tubular element to form the desired serpentine configuration, and then curing the filled, serpentined tubular element followed by totally discharging the incompressible material from the interior of the tubular element.
Abstract: A flexible cable is described for coupling portable objects such as bicycles to a support which cable includes a metal reinforcement member interposed and sandwiched between an inner body of heat setting polymeric material and a cover of heat setting resilient polymeric material which intimately engages the reinforcement member. The ends of the cable are provided with means for receiving a detachable locking means.
Abstract: A socket of a hose coupling for use with a nipple, the socket and nipple defining an annular space for receiving and gripping an end of a flexible hose. The socket has a first threaded portion with substantially sharp threads and a helically spaced second threaded portion with a sharp starting thread followed by blunt threads.
Abstract: A plurality of particles of oxide film forming metal randomly attached to portions of each other and a plurality of which are attached to a metallic substrate, the unconnected portions between particles defining porously interconnected open cell nucleation sites capable of aiding change of state from a liquid to a gas.
Abstract: A hose having a cover and carcass reinforced tube between which are disposed successive plies of spiralled multiple-end tubing and preferably a cellular foam matrix, the successive tubing plies generally nesting with each other.
Abstract: Noise produced by a rotating apparatus having radially extending, spaced, load carrying elements, e.g. the tread design portions of a tire, is modulated by selectively pitching and sequencing load carrying elements. The array of load carrying elements are selected from at least two different pitch lengths, the ratio of pitch lengths being within a given range of ##EQU1## N = 3, 4, 5 OR 6. Noise is further modulated by utilizing strings of 3 or more consecutive load carrying elements having substantially the same pitch length. The length and sequential position of the strings modulates the natural load carrying element frequency. The invention is useful in the design of such apparatus as tread elements for tires, gear teeth, V-belt notching, fan blade spacing, and in other rotating apparatus.
Abstract: This invention relates to an integrally molded core and platform for an endless array of magnetic tape for use in cartridges. The core is integrally connected to the platform in a one-piece construction. The upper exterior portion of the core is defined by two oppositely facing radii having a common tangent in order to minimize tape drag and hang-up or catching of the tape as it releases from the inside of the spool to be transported to the transducer head.
Abstract: Thixotropic battery paste is metered at a substantially predetermined volumetric flow rate onto a battery grid with the aid of a positive displacement pump means and alternate operation of a pair of cylinder and ram metering devices which are synchronized to deliver the paste substantially without turbulence to a discharge means such as a nozzle for delivery to the battery grid substrate.
Abstract: A belt with at least one groove in its top and an attached working element with a foot portion having at least one rib that is disposed at least partially in the groove. A single fastener attaches the foot portion to the belt.
Abstract: A multi-layer separator for use in alkaline storage batteries is disclosed. In one aspect of the invention the separator comprises bibulous, non-membranous layers together with a coating of a relatively thin layer of a gelling agent applied to at least one side of one of the bibulous layers. In another aspect of the invention, outer bibulous, non-membranous layers sandwich and are bonded to a semi-permeable membranous layer with an adherent gelling agent to form a high-strength laminated separator. These separators find use in a variety of alkaline galvanic cells, particularly in rechargeable cells such as nickel-cadmium, nickel-zinc, silver-zinc, manganese dioxide-zinc, and similar cells.
Abstract: Reinforced polymeric tubular articles, e.g., wire braid reinforced hose, are severed into desired lengths by clamping the tubular article in a split fixture, the split portion defining a cutting plane, and preferably advancing the tubular article toward a stationary cutting blade while continuously maintaining tension on the surface of the tubular article being cut by progressively bending the tubular article as it is passed through the cutting blade until fully severed. The apparatus rapidly cuts the reinforced tubular articles very smoothly without binding.
Abstract: A toothed power transmission belt having a substantially inextensible tensile member with longitudinally spaced teeth secured thereto, the teeth having a longitudinal cross section configuration which includes low friction surfaces that extend generally perpendicularly from the tensile member to interconnected rounded corners that permit the belt teeth to mesh easily with teeth of a sprocket.

Abstract: A coupling for a tubularly shaped flexible shaft element, the coupling having a generally cup shape with a sleeve for receiving the flexible shaft element and an integral bottom portion with circumferentially spaced apertures disposed near the integral sleeve.
Abstract: A battery and enclosure such as a rechargeable lantern battery housing a self-contained battery, and a recharge jack mounted in the enclosure, includes a low resistance, high power current-limiting means connected between one of the output terminals and the corresponding polarity terminal of the battery and which is provided with heat indicating means for determining if the output terminals of the battery have been short-circuited.
Abstract: A cotton doffer with integrally molded elastomeric teeth in an annulus projecting from at least one side thereof, the doffer reinforced with a perforated disk having at least an annular portion embedded in the doffer to a point generally radially inward of the mid diameter of the annulus.
Abstract: An endless positive drive belt is described having a tensile-loaded castable elastomeric body supporting circumferentially spaced cogs or teeth. The alternating land and teeth portions of the belt carry a layer of wear-resistant fabric, the outer surface of which is free of elastomer due to the preferred presence of a bonded layer of elastomer impervious material during the casting operation. A method for producing the belt using the elastomer impervious material is described.
Abstract: An apparatus for making transmission belts by assembling a belt sleeve or belt body in the conventional manner and placing them in a vulcanizing chamber. The belt body or sleeve is sandwiched between radially expansible and radially contractable members of the vulanizing chamber. Outward radial pressure is first applied to the belt body or sleeve and then a radial inward pressure is applied. Heat is simultaneously added to cure the body or sleeve.
Abstract: Testing apparatus including a fixed shaft and a floating shaft with means for moving it selectively generally parallel to the fixed shaft, two pulleys on each shaft paired and aligned between shafts and wherein one of the pulleys is the selectively variable diameter type.

Abstract: Method and apparatus are taught for applying an electrochemically active thixotropic paste onto a porous substrate. A discharge means such as a nozzle is used to deliver a predetermined amount of the paste onto the moving substrate which then enters the nip of a set of opposed driven rolls of desired spacing which compresses the paste into the interstices of the pores of the substrate to produce the desired plate.
