  • Patent number: 5695163
Abstract: A wall-mounted shelving system is provided including a wall-mounted track and a cantilevered bracket both based on aluminum extrusions having structural cross-sections and a metal locking pin. The track has a flange member which is periodically machined to accept mounting screws and a web member with through-holes providing for vertical adjustability of the bracket. The bracket is sliced from a special extrusion and machined in the back to slide on to the track. The hook shaped integral part of the bracket allows for the pin to slide through the bracket and position it vertically. The shelving plane slides into the opening between the two cantilevering structural extension members of the bracket and is supported at least at two points without utilizing any positive connection between shelving material and the bracket.

  • Patent number: 5694513
Abstract: A waveguide device comprising at least a waveguiding layer, a cladding layer and, optionally, an adhesion-enhancing layer is disclosed. By using specific fluorinated polyimides as materials for each of the layers of the waveguide device, the process for producing the waveguide device is simplified, the production cost is reduced, and the flexibility is imparted to the waveguide device, which are not achieved in a quartz-type waveguide. Also, a single mode, a low loss at 1.3 micron band and a high moisture-resistance which are not achieved by conventional plastic-type waveguide are possible.

  • Patent number: 5692845
Abstract: An airline ticket printer includes a magnetic reading and writing station that has a read/write head for recording information on, or reproducing information from, a magnetic stripe carried on the ticket. The ticket is driven past the read/write head by a drive mechanism that contacts the ticket at a substantial distance from the read/write head so that the magnetic stripe is free to flex independently of the portion of the ticket that is in contact with the drive mechanism. More satisfactory contact between the read/write head and the magnetic stripe is thereby achieved. The ticket printer also has a second reading/writing station in series with the first station along a ticket feed path, so that errors in reading or writing by the first station may be detected and/or corrected at the second station. A ticket feed path is constructed using feed modules that are mounted on pins extending from a vertical mounting plate.

  • Patent number: 5689078
Abstract: An apparatus and method for generating music from color input data is disclosed. Color data extracted from a selected portion of a still or moving picture image displayed on a color graphical output means is converted by a central processing unit into a signal comprising musical information which is played by a sound output means. The images are retrieved from a storage device. The image portion converted into musical information corresponds to the location of a cursor displayed over the image. The central processing unit is programmed and controlled by a keyboard and mouse to move the cursor to varying positions on the displayed image and to generate different musical information depending on the color data at each position. The apparatus and method can also be used to transform audio input from a musical device and a MIDI interface into color data for display as an image on a color graphical output means.

  • Patent number: 5688920
Abstract: Disclosed and claimed are nucleotides for genes encoding the canine herpesvirus (CHV) gB, gC and gD homologues. These genes encode polypeptides of 879, 459 and 345 amino acids, respectively, which are also disclosed and claimed. The genes are useful as DNA probes or, for preparing PCR primers. The polypeptides are useful in antigenic, immunological or vaccine compositions. The nucleotides can be expressed in any suitable vector system, allowing for production of the polypeptides. Additionally, the vector system containing any or any combination of the nucleotides can be employed in an antigenic, immunological or vaccine composition, such as a poxvirus vector system, e.g., a CHV-vaccinia or avipox virus recombinant, as can the products from expression, i.e., the gB, gC and gD glycoproteins. Antibodies elicited by the glycoproteins or from expression of the vector containing the nucleotide(s) are also useful. Methods for making and using the composition are also disclosed and claimed.

  • Patent number: 5685550
Abstract: A shaft extending in the skating directions is supported by stanchions depending from a boot plate. Spherical wheels formed by hemispherical segments are rotatably secured to the shaft in fixed axial position by a ring member having wing axles extending transversely the shaft axis, the ring member being rotatable about bearing members secured to the shaft. One Of the bearing members has a braking cam with a pair of oppositely positioned recesses which mate with a corresponding braking detent mechanism mounted in each wing axle. Each wheel segment is independently rotatably secured to a wing axle for rotation in the skating directions. The wing axles rotate with the wheels about the shaft in response to a stopping action transverse to the skating directions to provide a braking resistance in response to the detent mechanism riding against the cam surface. Different spring loads and springs are provided to allow for different skating stroke and stopping forces.

  • Patent number: 5686608
Abstract: A process for preparing polycyclic aromatic compounds by cross-coupling aromatic boron compounds with aromatic halogen compounds or perfluoroalkylsulfonates in the presence of metallic palladium as catalyst comprises adding to the reactiona) at least one water-soluble complexing ligand andb) sufficient water for the reaction mixture to form an aqueous phase. The reaction of the invention proceeds chemoselectively so that even electrophilic groups such as esters or nitriles do not have an adverse effect on the course of the reaction. The use according to the invention of a water-soluble complexing ligand in an aqueous phase enables polycyclic aromatic compounds to be prepared in very good yields and at the same time very high purity, in particular without contamination by the complexing ligands.

Tickets are pre-staged from a ticket storage bin to a staging point to reduce print-cycle time. Ticket errors can be corrected and changes can be made by re-inserting the old ticket into the machine, reading the information that had been magnetically recorded on the old ticket and either printing a new ticket or over-printing the old ticket. If a new ticket is printed, the old ticket is deposited in a safe receptacle inside the machine.
