  • Patent number: 5423860
Abstract: A protective carrier having a sleeve body with a distal end, a proximal end, and a passageway extending longitudinally between them. One or more elements are disposed in the passageway proximate to the distal end for interlocking with a suture anchor to capture the suture anchor at least partially within the sleeve body. The carrier further includes one or more elements for aligning the sleeve body with a distal portion of a suture anchor driver to inhibit rotation of the sleeve body relative to the driver during and after insertion of the distal driver portion through the passageway.

  • Patent number: 5417246
Abstract: A pneumatic control system for providing pressurized air and vacuum to ophthalmic microsurgical instruments. The pneumatic system is constructed in a drawer assembly to allow it to be readily inserted into or removed from a modularly constructed cabinet of a microsurgical control console. In addition, the pneumatic system improves upon existing pneumatic control systems by providing a third mode of microscissors operation from a single-pneumatic port. The third mode is made possible by a high speed three-way solenoid control valve which provides rapid pulses of air to the pneumatic port. A second improvement involves the use of a pneumatic pressure transducer to monitor pneumatic pressure being supplied to the pneumatic system in order to recognize non-hazardous transient drops in air pressure which can occur under certain normal operating conditions.

  • Patent number: 5400805
Abstract: A novel surgical fastener is disclosed for attaching soft tissues (e.g. ligaments, tendons and the like) to bone and bone-like structures. The surgical fastener comprises a shank and an enlarged head disposed on one end of the shank. A central bore passes completely through the fastener along its longitudinal axis, and a plurality of diametrically projecting ribs are disposed along the length of the shank. The foregoing fastener is used to attach soft tissues (e.g. ligaments, tendons and the like) to bone and bone-like structures in the following manner. First, the soft tissue is placed against the bone and then a thin guide wire is passed through the soft tissue and into the bone. A cannulated drill is then loaded coaxially onto the guide wire and is moved down the guide wire and worked on the guide wire so as to form a hole through the soft tissue and into the bone. Next, the cannulated drill is withdrawn from the guide wire and the aforementioned surgical fastener is loaded coaxially onto the guide wire.

  • Patent number: 5374269
Abstract: A drill bit having a small-diameter shank, an abbreviated drilling head, and a smooth transition portion between the shank and the head. The drill bit is particularly useful for drilling femoral tunnels during reconstruction of cruciate ligaments.

  • Patent number: 5366477
Abstract: A link, and assembly and instrument using same, for transmitting actuating forces from an actuating member to a work member. The link includes a link body having a distal end and a proximal end. The distal end of the link body is movably interconnected with the work member by a distal interconnection element such as an arcuate groove-and-flange assembly, and is interconnected at its proximal end to an actuating member by a proximal pivotal interconnection element. The proximal element transmits a first actuating force from the actuating member to the work member. A shoulder, disposed on the link body preferably between the distal and proximal elements for interconnecting, engages the actuating member when a second, greater actuating force is applied to the actuating member in a direction opposite to that of the first actuating force. The greater force is thereby transmitted fully to the work member. The link assembly preferably includes a spacer member to assist positioning of the actuating member.

  • Patent number: 5192287
Abstract: A surgical device (20) used to tie knots in sutures is disclosed. The device has a stationary leading member (42) and a sliding trailing member (44), together with a mechanism (26, 102) for sliding the trailing member relative to the leading member. One knot (90) of the suture is placed against the end of the leading member (42) and a second knot (92) is placed against the end of the trailing member (44). The two knots are slid into place with the first knot being held in position against the tissue and the device (20) is acutuated to slide the trailing member together with the second knot into position tightly against the first knot.
