Abstract: A modulator assembly for a flat panel display device is fabricated with a single piece substantially U-shaped isolation member. The modulation electrode pairs are formed as bifilar strips configured singularly to and insulatively affixed to the isolation member.
Abstract: The present invention is an improvement in a method of screening a line screen slit mask color picture tube. Such method includes coating a faceplate panel of the tube with a photosensitive material, inserting a slit shadow mask into the panel and exposing the photosensitive material by passing light from a line light source through the slits of the mask. The improvement comprises positioning a generally cylindrical shaped lens between the line light source and the faceplate panel during exposure of the photosensitive material. The longitudinal axis of the lens is oriented perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the line light source. Because of the presence of the lens, the images of the line light source projected through the slits of the mask onto the photosensitive material at locations off the major and minor axes of the panel are rotated toward parallelism with the minor axis thereby resulting in exposure of straight smooth lines on the photosensitive material.
Abstract: An electron beam injection structure for flat panel display device includes electron injection electrodes which span a beam guide assembly for propagating electron beams. One end of the electron injection electrodes is in closer proximity to the cathode than the corresponding end of the beam guide structure. The injection of electrons from the cathode to the beam guide structure therefore can be maximized by increasing the voltage on the electron injection electrodes while permitting changes in the operating voltages applied to the beam guide structure and other elements of the display device.

Abstract: A multibeam electron gun comprising two spaced successive electrodes individually held in position from a common support. One electrode comprises a single metal first plate having at least three electron-beam-defining first apertures therein. The other electrode is a composite structure comprising (a) a single metal second plate having a window therein opposite each of said first apertures and (b) a separate metal third plate attached to said second plate closing each of the windows. The third plate has a single electron-beam-defining second aperture therein separately aligned with one of the first apertures.
Abstract: Method and apparatus are described for producing a unique machine-readable marking, such as a bar-code marking, on each of a succession of workpieces, such as glass envelope parts of cathode-ray tubes. The method comprises producing and applying a different unique stencil for each workpiece and then applying a suitable paint through the stencil.
Abstract: A method for fabricating a CRT (cathode-ray tube) in which a partially-completed faceplate-panel assembly is baked-out and heat-sealed to a funnel during the same baking cycle. Jets of oxygen-containing gas are directed intermittently into the open neck of the funnel at least during the heating-up period of the heating cycle.

Abstract: Method for photodepositing a CRT screen structure including projecting a light field through an IC filter having tailored light transmission, through a photographic master and incident upon a photosensitive layer. The IC filter is a half-tone comprising an array of discrete spaced-apart opaque elements of predetermined sizes arranged along parallel spaced-apart lines.
Abstract: In a method for preparing a mosaic luminescent screen, islands of dry precoating material are adhered to a glass support surface at the sites of the mosaic parts of the screen. Then, the mosaic parts of the screen are deposited on the islands by the slurry-direct photographic method, including development with a turbulent aqueous developing medium. The use of islands provides the necessary adherence during development of the mosaic parts with a substantial reduction in the amount of precoating that must later be removed.
Abstract: A method for etching a strip of iron-nickel alloy, such as invar steel, having etch-resistant stencils on opposite major surfaces thereof includes contacting the stencilled surfaces with a ferric-chloride etchant. The etchant is controlled (a) to contain not more than 5 molar percent nickel ion with respect to the total content of nickel and iron ions, (b) to have a specific gravity greater than about 1.495 (48.degree. Baume) (c) and to have a temperature greater than 70.degree. C.

Abstract: In an intaglio printing method, the steps of providing a novel intaglio inking plate having a surface and means for producing different prescribed patterns of shallow depressions therein, producing a first prescribed pattern of depressions in said surface, filling said depressions with ink, transferring ink from the pattern of filled depressions to a transfer surface, altering the surface to provide a second pattern of shallow depressions therein and then repeating the step of filling the depressions with ink and transferring an ink pattern to a transfer surface.
Abstract: CRT (cathode-ray tube) comprises an evacuated glass envelope, an electron-gun mount assembly housed in the envelope, the electrodes of said envelope being confined by closely-spaced glass surfaces, and an insulative coating on said glass surfaces opposite electrodes of said mount assembly. The insulative coating is a substantially-continuous, noncrystalline film of a nonionic organic polymeric material.
Abstract: CRT employs a quadrupolar-focusing color-selection structure comprising two or more apertured masking plates. Each plate has therein an array of substantially rectangular apertures which are positioned relative to one another to produce electrostatic quadrupolar-focusing lenses when operating voltages are applied thereto. The color-selection structure may, by its geometry, provide at the same time electrostatic dipolar deflecting fields when operating voltages are applied.
Abstract: The novel method comprises impacting an aqueous slurry of solid particles on the surface of a glass viewing window in such manner as to stress the glass in the impacted area of the window without substantial erosion, abrasion or etching of the impacted surface, and then etching the impacted surface with an aqueous fluoride etchant.
Abstract: Article of manufacture comprises a solid core particle individually encapsulated with a film consisting essentially of alkyl 2-cyanoacrylate polymeric material. The film may be produced in situ by agitating a mixture of core particles having adsorbed water on the surfaces thereof in a nonaqueous liquid containing dissolved alkyl 2-cyanoacrylate monomer, whereby the monomer and adsorbed water react and deposit the film on the surfaces of the particles.
Abstract: Electrical heating unit for tipping-off vacuum electron tubes comprises a cylindrical resistance heating coil, a cylindrical heat-shielding means within and spaced from the heating coil and a support plate adjacent one end of the coil permitting leads of a vacuum tube to be positioned within the heat-shielding means. The heat-shielding means comprises a unitary member having a hollow cylindrical body, an outwardly-extending flange at one end of the body, and an inwardly-extending flange at the other end of said body adapted to support the leads of said vacuum tube with the tubulation of the tube extending therethrough. The body has a height that is less than the height of the longest lead of the vacuum tube.
Abstract: A gaseous mixture of nitrogen and water vapor (dew point of about -8.degree. to 32.degree. C.), heated to 550.degree. to 750.degree. C., contacts the surfaces of a steel part for a sufficient time to produce adherent, deep-black layers on the part. Steel aperture masks and support frames for color television picture tubes may be blackened by the novel method.
Abstract: In a method of vaporizing getter material from a getter container inside a vacuum electron tube, light from the vaporization is sensed at least from the outset of the heating of the container. A time-dependent sample signal is produced from the sensed light which is compared with time-dependent criteria related to the vaporization, and a characteristic of the vaporization is derived from the comparison.
Abstract: A workpiece having a machine-readable coded marking abraded into the surface thereof. The marking comprises a plurality of related marks, such as bar-code marking, which have substantially different light reflectances than the surrounding surface. The markings may be made by moving a means for abrading a defined surface area along a particular path with respect to the surface to be marked. The abrading means is selectively activated or deactivated according to a prearranged program to selectively abrade the surface.
