    Abstract: A dimensionally stable plastic canning ring for securing vacuum sealing lids to food containers during processing, is fabricated of thermoplastic material reinforced with fibers. The fibers are circumferentially aligned in the plastic media whereby the canning ring exhibits thermal expansion which is lowest in the direction of fiber alignment, i.e., circumferentially. The circumferential thermal coefficient of expansion substantially matches that of a glass container with which the canning ring is utilized. Due to the similarity of thermal coefficients of expansion, relative dimensional differences between the plastic ring and the glass container occurring during processing are negligible. The ring is manufactured by an injection molding process. The mold cavity includes a single gate disposed generally adjacent its periphery.

    Abstract: The disclosure relates to an improved venting arrangement for a solar energy collecting device of the type wherein a double walled tubular-type structure is employed with the outer wall of the inner tube carrying a solar absorbent coating and the interior of the inner tube being periodically filled with a heat transfer fluid. To prevent such heat transfer fluid from completely filling the inner tube, and thus establishing an undesirable siphoning action, and to concurrently permit the unrestricted venting of air out of the inner tube during filling and into the inner tube upon drainage of the fluid therefrom, this disclosure provides a vent tube extending into the upper regions of the inner tube and having a floatable valve structure mounted on its upper end and arranged so as to effect a seating of the valve and the closing of the vent tube when the fluid level in the inner tube reaches a desired height.

    Abstract: This invention relates to a method of sealing a container mouth, and especially the mouth of a glass container, and the glass container so sealed. The method involves oxidizing the container rim portion, applying a first annular thin coating of an organo-functional silane compound and then a second annular thin coating of an ethylene acrylic acid copolymer over the first coating on the rim portion. A thin imperforate membrane such as aluminum foil having a thermoplastic sealing material such as Surlyn copolymer over its sealing surface is sealed to the container rim portion with heat and pressure.

    Abstract: A thermoplastic threaded closure for a fluid container comprises a relatively rigid, generally curvilinear dome, and an internally threaded annular skirt depending from the periphery thereof. An annular plug sealing member depends from the inside concave surface of the dome, and is constructed and arranged for a slight interference fit within an associated container finish. A plurality of circumferentially spaced venting ports may be provided through the dome, between the plug and the skirt.

    Abstract: A freestanding unitary container fabricated from an organic thermoplastic material is disclosed which includes a neck portion terminating in a main body portion having a generally flat bottom portion. The main body portion includes opposed centrally located collapsible label panel areas having upstanding rim portions adjacent the margin of the centrally located label panel areas. A flexible hinge portion is disposed between the upstanding rim portions and the label panel portions and provides an area of flexion between the label panel areas and the rim portions. As a partial vacuum is formed in the interior of the container, the label panel areas are drawn inwardly. The flexible hinge portions flex to accommodate the change in the label panel areas and isolate the rim portions and adjoining container sidewall portions form structural distortion.

    Abstract: A safety closure comprises a cap having a pair of locking lugs which engage complimentarily disposed camming surfaces on the associated container and a plug or valve style liner disposed within the cap. The liner includes a generally planar disk having a hollow cylindrical plug defining an outer surface having a compound taper and a conical projection spaced concentrically about said cylindrical plug. The liner extends into the finish of the container and seals it during axial translation of the closure corresponding to 180.degree. or less rotation thereof. The liner, due to its simplicity, may be fabricated of material which exhibits resistance to the product within the container but which would otherwise be unsuitable or difficult to mold into the cap.

    Abstract: There is disclosed herein apparatus which views a glass container from above while the container is rotated about its vertical axis. A source of light, preferably a laser, has its beam swept diametrically back and forth across the bottom of the container to be examined. The inclusion of a piece of stuck or fused glass in the container will create a light output in the form of a pair of concentric halos of light above the container finish. The halos are sensed by two concentric arrays of solar cells positioned above the container. The output of the solar cells is fed to logic and reject electronics for selected rejection from a line of ware moving along a conveyor, depending upon whether or not the container has a piece of stuck glass therein.

In the child-resistant mode, the resilient inner closure spring biases the outer shell into locking engagement with lugs formed on a cooperating container. For this purpose, the inner closure includes an annular plug, and a short annular skirt arranged to engage the container rim.

    Abstract: A batch process for recycling plastic container scrap is disclosed comprising the steps of reducing a container bearing an externally disposed label to granules, agitating the granules in hot water to remove the label material portion from the plastic portion, separating the hot water and label portion from the plastic granules, filtering and recycling the hot water into the batch while separating the waste label residue, remixing and reagitating until substantially all of the waste label residue is removed. Subsequently, the plastic granules are floated over a weir and collected in a dewatering station with the hot wash water recycled into a hot water reservoir. A major portion of the wash water is removed from the granules in the dewatering station. Substantially all of the residual wash water is removed in a drying station.

    Abstract: An apparatus for displaying an output of an inspection device for objects such as glass bottles and the like is connected to a source of data signals each proportional in magnitude to the amount of light received from an associated point on the object being inspected. The data signals are inputs to a storage means and an adder for generating a signal representing the difference between each one of the data points and an adjacent one of the data points stored in the storage means. Each difference signal is compared with a threshold signal to generate an event signal when the magnitudes differ. The event signals are displayed as a two-dimensional representation of the surface of the object as if it had been cut and unwrapped. The operator can repeat the inspection utilizing different threshold values to optimize the defect detection performance of the inspection device.

    Abstract: An apparatus and a method for identifying defects in objects, such as glass bottles, utilizing data signals generated from a photodiode camera and light source. Event signals are generated when the magnitudes of adjacent data signals differ by an amount which exceeds a threshold level. Signals are also generated to identify the location of each event signal with respect to a corresponding photodiode and to identify during which vertical sweep of the object the event signal was generated to associate the event signal with a point on the object. The event signals are processed to identify defects. Events in proximity in the same sweep are identified as a string. Event magnitudes and totals in a string are compared with predetermined values to identify defects. Strings in proximity are identified as a blob. Event magnitudes and totals and blob width are compared with predetermined values to identify defects.

    Abstract: Apparatus for inspecting glass containers in which an indexing starwheel moves a plurality of containers in series through a plurality of positions or stations where the containers are physically and optically examined.One station, or position, is described in detail as the position where a glass container that is in a vertical position is rotated about its vertical axis by engagement of the finish thereof with a driven wheel. The container, as it is rotated, is viewed by a camera whose lens focuses the sidewall image of the bottle onto a vertical, linear array of light sensitive pick-ups in the camera. The camera is supported relative to the bottle handling system for adjustment up and down, back and forth and sideways so as to have the flexibility of viewing different size bottles. At the station where the sidewall of the bottles is to be inspected, a light source in the form of a tall housing is positioned in a vertical, annular recess of the starwheel.

The container has a neck finish including a first upper annular retaining bead and a second lower annular retaining bead spaced axially beneath the first annular bead. The first retaining bead has a notch therein and the second annular bead is continuous. An annular protective flange extends radially outwardly and is axially spaced below the second bead. The closure has a base and a peripheral skirt with a lifting tab on the outer surface thereof, a first radially inwardly extending locking lug on the inner surface thereof adjacent the external lifting tab, and at least one second radially inwardly extending locking lug located diametrically opposite from the lifting tab and axially below the plane of the first locking lug.

    Abstract: The apparatus disclosed for severing gobs issuing its stream from a glass feeder. The shearing mechanism takes the form of two sets, or pairs, of shear blades mounted from diametrically opposed positions relative to the bowl of the feeder. A single cam drives through multiple linkage mechanisms to operate the two pairs of shear mechanisms and synchronisms so that the gobs will be all sheared at the same instant. The links in the linkage mechanism all are provided with the usual adjustments, as to lengths, in order to provide that adjustment after setup which is normally necessary to assure the proper operation of the shears.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to method and apparatus for preheating pulverous materials, such as glass batch constituents, prior to their introduction into a melting furnace to increase the efficiency and output of the melting installation. The pulverous materials are passed downwardly by gravity through a shell and tube preheater including an interior exhaust chamber to vent the contained moisture from the heated pulverous material. The venting prevents moisture condensation and build-up of the pulverous material within the tubes and batch materials, especially in cooler areas, which can cause tube pluggage. The subject invention is of particular utility to the glass industry and especially glass melting furnaces, but is also applicable to other types of furnaces.

    Abstract: The disclosure relates to a machine for making a plastic covering on a rigid base article which in the illustrated form comprises a glass bottle and a conforming shrunken plastic covering thereon. The plastic is fed in oriented sheet form to the turret apparatus, cut into lengths and wrapped and seamed on successive mandrels as sleeves. Bottles are simultaneously processed to preheat condition and indexed over the sleeves, the latter telescopically assembled on the rigid base article, i.e., the bottle, and the combination carried to a heat tunnel. The plastic sleeve shrinks into snug surface fit on the adjacent surface portion of the rigid base article.The bottle is preheated in one of two embodiments by: (1) a preheat tunnel on the machine which raises the bottles from room temperature to about 220.degree. F., or (2) the preheat is carried over as latent heat in the glass bottle from the annealing lehr, a part of the bottle manufacturing process.

    Abstract: The invention provides a method and apparatus for the manufacture of glass film having a thickness not in excess of 0.003 inches and accomplished by drawing the film through a narrow slot-like orifice. The walls of the orifice are defined by an electrically conductive, hot glass resistant metal and electrical currents are introduced into the metal walls of the orifice to effectively maintain the central portions of the orifice walls at a higher temperature than each of the two lateral end walls of the orifice, thereby producing a temperature differential in the drawn film on the order of 40.degree. F. between the edges of the film and the central portions of the film.
