  • Patent number: 4398017
Abstract: Copolyesters of iso- or terephthalic acid, ethylene glycol, 1,3 bis(2-hydroxyethoxy) benzene, and possibly other diols, have lower 0.sub.2 and CO.sub.2 permeabilities because of the 1,3 bis(2-hydroxyethoxy) benzene reactant. Also disclosed are hollow containers, sheet and film made from such copolyesters.

  • Patent number: 4396655
Abstract: This invention relates to a method of sealing a container mouth, and especially the mouth of a glass container, and the glass container so sealed. The method involves oxidizing the container rim portion, applying a first annular thin coating of an organo-functional silane compound and then a second annular thin coating of an ethylene acrylic acid copolymer over the first coating on the rim portion. A thin imperforate membrane such as aluminum foil having a thermoplastic sealing material such as Surlyn copolymer over its sealing surface is sealed to the container rim portion with heat and pressure.

  • Patent number: 4392579
Abstract: A thermoplastic threaded closure for a fluid container comprises a relatively rigid, generally curvilinear dome, and an internally threaded annular skirt depending from the periphery thereof. An annular plug sealing member depends from the inside concave surface of the dome, and is constructed and arranged for a slight interference fit within an associated container finish. A plurality of circumferentially spaced venting ports may be provided through the dome, between the plug and the skirt.

  • Patent number: 4387816
Abstract: A freestanding unitary container fabricated from an organic thermoplastic material is disclosed which includes a neck portion terminating in a main body portion having a generally flat bottom portion. The main body portion includes opposed centrally located collapsible label panel areas having upstanding rim portions adjacent the margin of the centrally located label panel areas. A flexible hinge portion is disposed between the upstanding rim portions and the label panel portions and provides an area of flexion between the label panel areas and the rim portions. As a partial vacuum is formed in the interior of the container, the label panel areas are drawn inwardly. The flexible hinge portions flex to accommodate the change in the label panel areas and isolate the rim portions and adjoining container sidewall portions form structural distortion.

  • Patent number: 4360563
Abstract: An improved composite material provides surfaces for handling hot glass charges and newly-formed glass articles without detrimental marring or marking of the same. The surface is formed on a relatively smooth metallic substrate by applying a primer coating of a first silicone resin to the substrate, applying a solventless second silicone resin binder coating over the primer, depositing a layer of granular heat-resistant carbonaceous material over the binder and allowing the binder to embed the carbonaceous material, and heat-curing the binder to provide a lubricated durable wear-resistant surface for handling hot glass charges or gobs as well as newly-formed glass articles.

  • Patent number: 4342398
Abstract: A pressure-resistant thermoplastic container has a low center of gravity and a dimensionally stable seating ring zone of substantial strength. The center of gravity is lowered by reducing the weight of the finish and neck, and using a larger diameter for the main body to reduce the overall height while maintaining the desired internal volume. The improved design of the seating ring results in a thicker wall in the bottom end and, therefore, a stronger structure. The bottom end includes a sharp V-shaped structure having a concave inside wall and a generally convex outside wall joined at the bottom ends by a return portion. A convex central portion is connected to an upper end of the inner wall to define a central cavity and an extreme lower end of the outer wall is generally concave.

  • Patent number: 4307060
Abstract: Disclosed are new copolyesters of terephthalic acid, bis(4-.beta.-hydroxyethyoxyphenyl)sulfone, ethylene glycol and a very small amount of a trifunctional cross-linking agent, particularly useful as molding compounds, especially for the extrusion-blow molding process of making hollow articles, and a method of making hollow articles.

  • Patent number: 4283215
Abstract: A mold assembly and method for automatically making crown bottom blown glassware wherein a charge of molten glass is shaped into a hollow preform in a parison mold by means of a plunger. The hollow preform or parison is removed from the parison mold and placed in a finishing mold having a bottom forming assembly comprised of an annular member slidably contained in the bottom end of the finish mold and a domed central member slidably mounted in the annular member such that it can be reciprocated from a normally retracted position level with or slightly below the top surface of the annular member to a position above that surface.

  • Patent number: 4122142
Abstract: A method is disclosed for reinforcing bottles with a tubular netting embedded in an exterior surface of the bottle. A tubular netting section is initially compressed in an axial direction to increase its diameter. The compressed netting is positioned over a preformed parison of a thermoplastic material. The compressed netting is then released to re-expand axially and contract diametrically, until the netting contacts the parison. The parison is finally transferred to a blow mold and blown into a finished bottle. During the blowing operation, the netting is embedded into and reinforces the walls of the blown bottle. Depending upon the materials from which the netting and bottle are formed, the netting may also weld to the bottle wall to further increase the strength of the bottle.

  • Patent number: 4108956
Abstract: This disclosure relates to both a method and apparatus for forming injection molded articles in a molding assembly which includes a heated runner housing adjacent a cooled mold. In a first disclosed embodiment, a slidable gate valve having a supply passageway is interposed between and in contact with both the cooled mold and heated runner. A layer of insulation material is included on the slidable gate valve to thermally segregate the differential temperature zones of the mold and runner. In a second embodiment, an axially reciprocable pin valve selectively opens and closes a passageway between a heated runner housing and a cooled mold to regulate the flow of plastic material. An annular sleeve of insulation material is telescoped over a portion of the pin valve to likewise thermally segregate the runner and mold.

  • Patent number: RE31442
Abstract: The invention provides a method and apparatus for the manufacture of glass film having a thickness not in excess of 0.003 inches and accomplished by drawing the film through a narrow slot-like orifice. The walls of the orifice are defined by an electrically conductive, hot glass resistant metal and electrical currents are introduced into the metal walls of the orifice to effectively maintain the central portions of the orifice walls at a higher temperature than each of the two lateral end walls of the orifice, thereby producing a temperature differential in the drawn film on the order of 40.degree. F. between the edges of the film and the central portions of the film.
