  • Patent number: 5278209
Abstract: Only two symmetrical stabilizers in a polyolefin or copolymer thereof, provide thermooxidative ("TO") or antioxidative ("AO") stability. One is an arylphosphite or arylfluorophosphite; the other is a monomolecular tri-substituted triazine in which each of three chlorine atoms on a trihalo-s-triazine is substituted with a piperazinone in which the N atom in the 4-position is alkylated. Only a trace amount of phosphite, at least 0.01 phr but less than 0.1 phr, is used so that the ratio of the piperazinone-substituted stabilizer to ester is greater than 1; additional phosphite has no noticeable effect. The trace amount of phosphite has a surprising booster effect, giving the stabilized composition excellent TO stability. Articles thermoformed from the stabilized polyolefin or copolymer thereof may be used under the hood or the dash of a vehicle, and, in containers for packaging goods, all of which articles are subject to TO degradation even if they are not subject to ultraviolet light degradation.

  • Patent number: 4458088
Abstract: A continuous process for the production of alkyl esters from carboxylic acids wherein an aqueous stream containing a first carboxylic acid, RCO.sub.2 H, is contacted with an organic stream comprising a carboxylic acid ester, R"CO.sub.2 R', so that the organic stream is enriched with RCO.sub.2 H. The RCO.sub.2 H enriched organic stream is separated from the aqueous stream and is contacted with a catalyst to obtain a second carboxylic acid, R"CO.sub.2 H, and a product carboxylic acid ester, RCO.sub.2 R'. The product ester, RCO.sub.2 R', is separated from the second acid, R"CO.sub.2 H, the reactant ester, R"CO.sub.2 R', and the first acid, RCO.sub.2 H, and the second acid, R"CO.sub.2 H, is esterified to obtain the reactant ester, R"CO.sub.2 R', which is recycled to the initial part of the process. In this process R is aliphatic or aromatic, R' is alkyl and R" is aliphatic with at least about 4 carbon atoms.

  • Patent number: 4427419
Abstract: Semipermeable membranes useful for separating gaseous mixtures of carbon dioxide and methane into enriched fractions of each are prepared from at least one polymer containing a preponderance of arylene units, such as polyxylene oxide, the arylene units containing pendent sulfone groups substituted with an aromatic group, such as phenyl.

  • Patent number: 4411798
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for separating heavy water from solutions. An anionic surfactant system is added to a solution of deuterium oxide in water. The separating agent added to the solution will form a first phase containing a majority of the surfactant with an increased concentration of D.sub.2 O and a second phase containing excess water with a decreased concentration of D.sub.2 O. The first stage is separated from the second stage, and the process is optionally repeated in a multi-stage or a continuous operation.
