    Abstract: A method and apparatus that eliminates the need for a derrick barge to lift the deck into place on a floating offshore structure. A connector is used to connect the transport barge to the floating offshore structure. The connector is a type that allows only relative pitch motions between the transport barge and floating offshore structure in response to sea states acting on the barge and floating offshore structure. The connector is also a type that allows disconnection while large forces are acting on the connector. One or more skidding girders attached to the legs of the deck support the legs of the deck above the skidding surface of the transport barge. A skidding surface on the girders, and complementary skidding surface on the surface of the transport barge and floating offshore structure, allow the deck to be skidded from the barge to the floating offshore structure.

The structure is formed from a plurality of closely spaced vertically oriented buoyant columns on which one or more modules or decks may be placed to support process equipment, a drilling rig, utilities, and accommodations for personnel. The columns are held in the spaced relationship by a plurality of horizontal plates spaced along the length of the columns and vertical plates located near the bottom of the columns and near the top of the columns. Drilling and/or producing is accomplished through risers located approximately in the center of the structure. The structure includes fixed ballast, an oil storage area, and voids and variable ballast for offsetting the lighter weight of the stored oil. The columns have a smaller water plane area than the horizontal plates.

    Abstract: A riser guide and support mechanism for a floating vessel, and particularly a spar type structure, where the buoyancy can stem extends nearly the entire length of the floating vessel. A riser centralizing element is provided on the riser near the lower end of the buoyancy guide stem. Riser bend limiting elements are positioned on the riser so as to extend above and below the riser centralizing element. Since the buoyancy cans and buoyancy can stem are not required to rotate relative to the stem guides on the floating vessel, the stem guides can be formed from pipe sections that provide a much larger bearing area than is customary.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for rapidly deballasting and lifting a substructure in a marine environment to a level where it will engage with a deck so that both act together as one body. Generally, the installation is carried out as follows. The substructure is towed to the mating site and upended (if necessary). The substructure may be connected to a temporary mooring and fixed ballast installed if necessary. Selected compartments in the substructure are filled with sea water until the substructure is submerged below the water line to a desired depth. A predetermined quantity of compressed air is pumped into lower tanks in the substructure. The deck to be joined with the substructure is positioned above and in alignment with the substructure. The proper valves are opened to allow the compressed air in the lower tanks to flow into the upper tanks that contain sea water. The compressed air displaces the sea water from the upper tanks.

The density control line is routed to the elevation where the control valve is located. A U-shaped trap is located between the control valve and air sparge header such that the density control water joins the humidified oxidation air. A liquid layer forms on the floor of the header and is moved toward the distant side of the header by the motion of the air passing on top of the liquid layer and by the continuous flow of water. The bottom section of the main header is perforated to allow the flowing water to exit the header into the tank and flush any accumulated solids that might penetrate the header through the air holes. The air holes are located in a section at a minimum of five degrees off the floor and maximum of one hundred eighty degrees off the header bottom and preferably at forty-five degrees.

    Abstract: An offshore jacket or compliant tower and method of installing an offshore jacket or compliant tower where the foundation piles do not initially support the jacket. The foundation piles are driven into the sea floor. Two or more temporary support piles are driven into the sea floor. Two or more docking piles are driven into the sea floor and extend a greater height above the sea floor than the foundation piles and the temporary support piles. The jacket, which includes flexpiles, is lowered into position such that it receives the docking piles. The docking piles locate and position the jacket above the temporary support piles and the foundation piles. The jacket is provided with vertical steel tubes that correspond to the location of the temporary support piles. A bulkhead in each vertical steel tube is vertically located such that the jacket is supported and leveled by the temporary support piles and not the foundation piles.

An adaptor box is suspended from a spreader bar provided with a dog leg center portion for effecting the load transfer from the crane. The lowering tool that supports the load is directly received in the adaptor box and transfers the load to the lowering apparatus without the need for rigging work.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for the installation of a deck on an offshore substructure. The invention is particularly useful with a floating substructure. Two independent pontoons each have two columns spaced apart from each other that extend upwardly from the pontoons. On each pontoon, a support beam attached to the columns spans the space between the columns. Each pontoon is provided with ballast tanks that allow the pontoons to be selectively ballasted or de-ballasted to control pontoon depth for receiving a deck or installing a deck on an offshore substructure. The pontoons may be ballasted down during transit of the deck such that the main body portion of the pontoons is below significant wave action and the columns present a relatively small water plane area. The pontoons allow the deck to be placed directly above the offshore substructure. For a floating substructure, the pontoons are ballasted while the floating substructure is simultaneously de-ballasted to transfer the deck to the floating substructure.

    Abstract: A pipeline branch arrangement that forms a piggable-Y at the intersection with the trunkline and is oriented vertically relative to the trunkline. The approach piping to all legs of the piggable-Y are configured to incorporate 3D bend or larger radii as required. This arrangement permits the passage of foam pigs, hard pigs, and smart pigs. Rotation of the piggable-Y to the vertical plane configures all of the branch piping in the vertical plane, which permits the support sled width for pipe laying to be kept to a minimum. The arrangement of the 3D bends fore and aft of the piggable-Y aligns the trunkline ends in a co-linear manner. This permits the configuration to be installed by conventional S-Lay techniques.
