  • Patent number: 8156306
Abstract: The invention provides a system to reclaim space identified as no longer in use and comprises a vLUN, a thinly provisioned mapped LUN, a mapping layer, and a data reduction engine. Chunks of data are stored at logical chunk addresses (LCAs) in the vLUN and are mapped to corresponding physical chunk addresses (PCAs) in the thinly provisioned mapped LUN. The data reduction engine performs a data reduction process on a first logical chunk of data stored at a first LCA in the vLUN, where the first logical chunk has a size that is a nonzero integer multiple of the size of the storage extent of the thinly provisioned mapped LUN. After the data reduction process, the PCA associated with the first logical chunk is no longer needed, and the thinly provisioned mapped LUN is instructed to deallocate the PCA associated with the first logical chunk that is no longer needed.

  • Patent number: 8142631
Abstract: In a particle focusing apparatus and a method for focusing particles, the particle focusing apparatus includes a channel, a fixing member, a fluid feeding portion and a power supply. The channel has first and second ends and extends substantially in a line. The fixing member includes a first fixing portion connected to and fixing the first end, and a second fixing portion connected to and fixing the second end. The fluid feeding portion feeds fluid having particles into the channel. The power supply has first and second terminals. The first terminal passes through the first fixing portion and is electrically connected to an anode of the power supply. The second terminal passes through the second fixing portion and is electrically connected to a cathode of the power supply. Thus, particles fed into the channel may be more easily and efficiently focused to a central region inside the channel.

  • Patent number: 8130948
Abstract: A method and system enables the selective addressing of groups of broadcast receivers within part of a satellite footprint. It uses two satellites having a common transmission band to transmit respective signals, and at receivers in the footprint the phases of the signals received from the two satellites are compared. This phase difference is dependent upon receiver location, but by measuring phase difference no absolute timing or phase measurement is required. A common key is generated at the receivers in a certain area. The output of selected receivers is fed back to the broadcast control centre and is used to encode the location-based services for that area. Preferably the operation is conducted on multiple frequencies and in multiple rounds of such frequencies. A multibit keyword can be directly generated at the receivers by use of a discrete Fourier transform (DFT) and combining its outputs for different rounds.
