    Abstract: A wireless communications system, together with devices to be clustered to make up such a system. The system operates a one-button initiated installation procedure whereby a device not previously installed will determine whether it is within transmission range of a device cluster in installation mode. If so, the device adopts the cluster address and goes through a routine of selecting a device address unique within the cluster. If there is no existing cluster in installation mode, the device selects a network address different to any other within transmission range, as well as a device address. The same one-button procedure places an installed device in a mode to initiate a new device to a cluster. Through a periodic enrolment procedure, performed by each device in a cluster, all devices are enabled to maintain their own list of required functionalities in other devices and to address them directly, thereby removing any requirement for one of the devices to act as a base station.

    Abstract: In retrieving data bits of a data signal in the form of digital sampling values on which the data bits are modulated asynchronously at a known modulation frequency, a system receives a phase signal supplying the phase position of the data bits of the sampled data signal relative to a predetermined starting point and determines the positions of the data bits from the phase signal and the known modulation frequency of the data bits. The system determines for each data bit to be retrieved whether its position is located around the position of a sampling value within a tolerance window of predetermined width. If so, the system uses the value of the sampling value within the tolerance window for retrieving The data bit. If not, the system uses both sampling values on both sides of the position of the data bit to be retrieved for retrieving the data bits.

    Abstract: A CATV system is provided that includes a head-end with laser transmitters to provide data to a multitude of nodes through a forward optical network tree. The nodes convert the optical signals into electrical signals and retransmit the television and data signals through a coaxial network tree to customer interface units (CIUs). The nodes include respective controllers which identify status signals from the equipment of the nodes and transmit the status signals and a reference signal to the head-end controller for display on a display of the head-end controller. The reference signal allows monitoring that the return optical transmitter and network are operating correctly and allows the return signals from the nodes to be aligned. The status signals from the nodes include laser operation, laser bias current and laser power output for the laser transmitters of the nodes.

    Abstract: The common encryption of content material is provided for decryption at a plurality of destination devices, each destination device having a unique private key of a public-private key pair. A multiple device key exchange is utilized to create a session key for encrypting the content material that is based on each of the public keys of the plurality of destination devices. A partial key is also created for each of the intended destination devices that relies upon the private key of the destination device to form a decryption key that is suitable for decrypting the encrypted content material. The encrypted content material and the corresponding partial key are communicated to each destination device via potentially insecure means, including broadcast over a public network. Each destination device decrypts the encrypted content material using the decryption key that is formed from its private key and the received partial key.

The content is subdivided into scenes having their own scene identification.

    Abstract: In a multiple access communication network a primary station (2) is coupled to a plurality of secondary stations (4 . . . 18). The secondary stations (4 . . . 18) transmit packets to the primary station in timeslots in a frame. These timeslots are chosen according to the DECT standard. The problem is that it is not possible to transmit 53 bytes ATM cells in an efficient way in the standard DECT packets. According to the present invention, the guard space to deal with the differing transmission delays between several secondary stations and the primary station is reduced. To prevent problems due to the above mentioned delay differences, the secondary stations (4 . . . 18) comprise compensation means for adjusting the transmission instants of the packets they transmit. By reducing the guard space, it becomes possible to transmit two 53 bytes ATM cells in a double DECT slot, enabling an efficient transmission of ATM cells over a DECT like frame.

Thereafter, if the person speaking continues to speak or becomes silent for a predetermined time period, the system operates to adjust the camera setting to display other participants in sequence who are not speaking or zooms out the camera by a specified amount to include all participants, so that the presence, including facial expressions and reactions, of all participants can be conveyed to the remote receiving end. The system is also configured to capture a new person entering or an existing participant exiting during the course of a video conference session.
