    Abstract: The present invention provides anionic polymerization initiators, comprising lithium amino magnesiate complexes, resulting in diene polymer and copolymer elastomers. The invention initiators have stable living ends at high polymerization temperatures and produce polymers containing a high level of tertiary amine functionality. Such polymers exhibit an increased efficiency in coupling termination reactions, and elastomers and products prepared from such polymers exhibit reduced hysteresis properties. Methods are also provided for preparing the initiators, the polymers and the elastomers.

A method of preparing a polymer includes forming a solution of one or more anionically polymerizable monomers in a hydrocarbon solvent; and, polymerizing the monomer with an anionic polymerization initiator comprising a carbon-lithio salt of the adduct of a cyclic secondary amine with a conjugated diene. A functionalized polymer includes the termination product of a living polymer having the general formula AYLi, wherein A is a functional group derived from an anionic polymerization initiator; and, Y is a divalent polymer radical; wherein the anionic polymerization initiator is a carbon-lithio salt of the adduct of a cyclic secondary amine with a conjugated diene.

    Abstract: A process for compounding filler materials and polymers for the preparation of vulcanizable rubber compositions comprises the steps of combining at least one polymer and other compounding ingredients with a filler treated with a liquid in an amount of from about 10 to 60 percent by weight, based upon the combined weight of the liquid and the filler under conditions sufficient to uniformly distribute the filler to form a pre-blend; and mixing the pre-blend until the filler is suitably dispersed throughout the polymer. A vulcanizable rubber composition containing a filler prepared by combining at least one polymer and other compounding ingredients with a filler treated with a liquid in an amount of from about 10 to 60 percent by weight, based upon the combined weight of the liquid and the filler under conditions sufficient to uniformly distribute the filler to form a pre-blend; and mixing the pre-blend until the filler is suitably dispersed throughout the polymer.

    Abstract: Hydrocarbon polymers with grafts of polyethers, polylactones, or polyesters from the reaction of phosgene with glycols having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms are disclosed as having good release properties or low adhesion to hydrocarbon rubber materials. The hydrocarbon backbone polymers include EPDM, hydrogenated polybutadiene, and hydrogenated poly(styrene-butadiene) all said polymers having pendant succinic anhydride groups or brominated p-methylstyrene-isobutylene copolymers. The above-referenced graft copolymers along with butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber or epichlorohydrin polymers or copolymers are described as useful polymers to make self-release curing bladders or sleeves for use in making molded articles such as pneumatic tires.

    Abstract: Block copolymers are described which comprise alternating blocks of (A) a polysiloxane; and (B) a copolymer of a 1,3-conjugated diene and a monovinyl aromatic compound. The block copolymers can be prepared by reacting a polysiloxane with a dilithiated copolymer of a conjugated diene and a monovinyl aromatic compound and thereafter neutralizing the reaction product with a protonic acid or a polyfunctional alkyl silane or silicon tetrachloride. Cured elastomer compositions exhibiting surface release characteristics are obtained by curing a mixture comprising the above-described block copolymer in the presence of a curing system comprising a peroxide and sulfur. Multilayer elastomer structures useful in manufacturing articles from elastomeric materials also are described wherein at least a portion of an outer layer of the multilayer elastomer structure has release characteristics and comprises the cured block copolymers of the present invention.
