Abstract: A system for electronically signalling along a fence line, comprising one or more transmitter device(s) for connection to the fence line from which control signals or information may be sent along the fence line and one or more receiver device(s) for connection to the fence line to receive control signals. Each transmitter device includes transmission means arranged to form the control signal(s) or information as one or more data blocks, generate a carrier frequency, and phase modulate the carrier with the signal and apply the phase modulated carrier to the fence line. Each receiver device includes means arranged to demodulate the transmitted signal to recover the data block(s) and process the data block(s) to recover the control signals(s) or information. The system is adapted to work with both electric and non-electric fence lines.

Abstract: A vacuum heat treating furnace for brazing a large metallic part is disclosed. The vacuum furnace includes a pressure vessel having a cylindrical wall and a door dimensioned and positioned for closing an end of the cylindrical wall. A workpiece handling system is mounted on the pressure vessel door for supporting a metallic workpiece to be heat treated or brazed. The workpiece handling system includes apparatus for rotating the workpiece during a processing cycle. A vacuum system is connectable to the workpiece for creating a subatmospheric pressure inside the workpiece during a brazing cycle.

Abstract: A furnace for heat treating of metal parts includes a hot zone enclosure defining a hot zone therein. The hot zone enclosure has a side wall, a first end wall, and a second end wall. The side wall has slots formed therethrough and along the length thereof. The heat treating furnace also includes a system for injecting a cooling gas into the hot zone through the hot zone enclosure. The heat treating furnace further includes a damper arrangement for directing the cooling gas over a selected portion or portions of the workpiece load and through one or more of the slots. In one embodiment of the invention, all actuated components in the furnace are located outside of the hot zone to minimize damage to moving parts that are caused by exposure to extreme heat.
Abstract: A guiding and holding jig for a flexible connector such as a cable and/or the like in a pull-out unit for use where the diameters and the number of the connectors may be different. The jig includes holding frames which can be easily substituted. The guiding and holding jig comprises linear links to which holding frames, which support the connector at a position spaced outwardly from the bodies of the links, are removably attached and hinge members pivotally connecting the linear links to each other. The jig retracts and extends the connector without causing sharp bends while holding it in the holding frames as the pull-out unit is moved in or out. In cases there are a large number of connectors, large holding frames are used.
Abstract: A pressure reducing apparatus and a method of operating a pressure reducing apparatus are provided. The apparatus is operable to reduce the pressure and flow rate of oil being discharged from a well head to downstream processing equipment. The device has central flow channel configured to receive a flow of oil and reduce the pressure in the oil. The apparatus has internal components formed of a ceramic material that resists erosion and wear caused by sand and other debris in the oil. In one embodiment of the invention, a ceramic outer sleeve is disposed in the central flow channel and cooperates with a ceramic inner sleeve having an orifice. The ceramic inner sleeve is interchangeable with other ceramic sleeves having different orifices to modify the pressure and flow characteristics of oil as it is discharged to the downstream processing equipment.

Abstract: A machine readable ballot comprises a ballot sheet having a voting identifier including a representation of election jurisdiction information and a unique ballot identifier. A plurality of contest regions each have two or more mark spaces for making voting selections. The contest regions correspond to contests in the jurisdiction represented by the election jurisdiction information, and the representation of election jurisdiction information and the mark spaces are machine readable.
Abstract: The invention relates to methods and apparatus for estimating stiffness or elasticity profiles across timber. This involves measuring a velocity of a plane compression wave propagating in the timber, determining density information relating to the timber and estimating an initial elasticity profile. A reiterative process is then conducted whereby a revised elasticity profile is determined using the density information and initial elasticity profile. The revised elasticity profile is then used to determine how the timber is utilised.

Abstract: A switch as for a flashlight selectively connects, for example, a solid state light source and a battery in the flashlight in circuit for causing the solid state light source to produce light. The switch comprises a pushbutton and a metal contact having a periphery that selectively contacts a housing, and a spring. Pressing the pushbutton moves the pushbutton and the metal contact to contact the housing. The metal contact may include a feature for centering the metal contact with respect to the pushbutton and thus with respect to the housing end. The switch may be disposed in a tail cap attached to a flashlight housing.

Abstract: A method for making an article having an electronic device embedded therein comprises providing a substrate having first and second opposing broad planar surfaces; mounting an electronic device on the first broad planar surface of the substrate; and applying a layer of melt-flowable adhesive of substantially uniform thickness on the first broad planar surface of the substrate to cover the electronic device. Abstract: A system and method are useful for tracking an article at a plurality of stations. A smart tag is associated with each article to be tracked, e.g., by being attached to the article either directly or indirectly, e.g., to a container containing the article. The smart tag includes at least an electronic memory coupled to an antenna by which information from the memory may be transmitted and/or information may be received and stored in the memory. Smart tag control units and antenna at the stations communicate with the smart tags and communicate directly or indirectly with one or more processors that process the information.
Abstract: A method is provided for recovering oil from a subterranean oil-bearing formation. One or more pairs of electrodes are inserted into the ground in proximity to a body of oil in said formation. A voltage difference is then established between the electrodes to create an electric field in the oil-bearing formation. As voltage is applied, the current is manipulated to induce oxidation and reduction reactions in components of the oil. The oxidation and reduction reactions lower the viscosity in the oil and thereby reduce capillary resistance to oil flow so that the oil can be removed at an extraction well.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method of cleaving a recombinantly expressed protein from an intein and ligating the protein to a peptide containing an N-terminal cysteine having an unoxidized sulfhydryl side chain which comprises contacting the protein with the peptide in a reaction solution comprising a conjugated thiophenol, thereby forming a C-terminal thioester of the recombinant protein which spontaneously rearranges intramolecularly to form an amide bond linking the protein to the peptide.

Abstract: A head and neck protection system includes a head protector, a shoulder protector, and a neck guard for protecting an athlete from injury. The neck guard detachably connects between the head protector and the shoulder protector and includes a collar. The collar has a first edge and a second edge spaced apart from the first edge and longer than the first edge. The first and second edges include fasteners for detachably coupling the collar between the head protector and the shoulder protector. The collar has a perimeter that flares radially outwardly as the collar extends from the head protector to the shoulder protector. The collar interconnects the head protector with the shoulder protector to form a restraint that limits displacement of the head protector relative to the shoulder protector.
Abstract: A flashlight comprises a housing having, for example, a tapered portion and a hole at a forward end thereof with a flexible/bendable extension including a solid state light source extending through the hole at the forward end thereof. A switch, preferably in a tail cap, selectively connects the solid state light source and at least one battery in the housing in circuit for causing the solid state light source to produce light. The flexible extension preferably makes electrical contact with the housing and/or preferably includes an insulating cover having an end retained in the housing.
Abstract: A dual axis joystick control system is used intuitively for maneuvring a waterborne vessel having two or more waterjets with steering deflectors (13) and reverse ducts (14) mounted independently of the steering deflectors. The joystick (21) is operated to actuate the reverse ducts of the port and starboard waterjets for either common or differential deflections of thrust, and to actuate the steering deflectors of the port and starboard waterjets for common deflections of thrust.
Abstract: A method is disclosed for making reduced calorie cultured cheeses whereby the natural lipid content of milk is replaced with colloidal forms of synthetic or chemically structured lipids displaying low to no human digestibility. The colloidal dispersion of modified lipids contained within the milk base is initially stabilized by preferred combinations of polymeric and particulate hydrocolloidal materials such as structurally expanded cellulose. Such stabilization is important during formation of the curd to ensure homogeneous distribution and maintenance of the lipid dispersion throughout the coagulum yet allow effective concentration of the coagulum solids by means of ordinary water removal methods commonly used in the manufacture of conventional cultured cheeses. The coagulum is then processed by means similar to that employed for naturally fermented cheeses.
