Abstract: Upper surface (13) of an aerofoil (or rotor blade) is provided with nozzles or slots (14, 16) at leading portion (15) and trailing portion (17) to assist attachment of airflow by discharging gas towards trailing edge (11). Gas discharged may be heated, eg coming from rocket-type combustion chambers within the aerofoil. The aerofoil may be adjustable between high profile (as shown) and low profile (for supersonic flight) using jacks that pivot sections of upper surface (13) at leading and trailing edges (10-11).
Abstract: Impact absorbing assembly for slope protection systems, fitted in the containment and protection screens to guard against stones or other bodies landsliding, comprising two cables arranged in the form of loops, each being cased in a “U” shaped tube. The cables are interlaced or arranged in parallel, the loops being fastened together in their upper and lower part by a clamping element compressing the tubes. The cables comprising the invention may be installed taut between the hill anchoring and the protection system, or alternatively, fitted on the mesh support cables with the posts. When an overload occurs on the containment screen, the sudden pull on the cables will force the tubes to become distorted to slide within the clamping elements, the friction leading to a dissipation of energy.
Abstract: Novel synthetic monomers that have the capacity to be assembled into defined oligomers which bind with sequence specificity to duplex Watson-Crick DNA via a triple helix motif are provided.

Abstract: A microfluidic device and method for forming and dispensing minute volume segments of a material are described. In accordance with the present invention, a microfluidic device and method are provided for spatially confining the material in a focusing element. The device is also adapted for segmenting the confined material into minute volume segments, and dispensing a volume segment to a waste or collection channel. The device further includes means for driving the respective streams of sample and focusing fluids through respective channels into a chamber, such that the focusing fluid streams spatially confine the sample material. The device may also include additional means for driving a minute volume segment of the spatially confined sample material into a collection channel in fluid communication with the waste reservoir.

Abstract: Intercalates and exfoliates formed from layered materials and dendritic polymers are disclosed, together with the uses of these materials, e.g. in producing composite materials. The dispersion of layered materials in a dendritic polymer matrix (hyperbranched polymers, star shaped polymers or star branched polymers) or has not been disclosed in the prior art. The high number of end-groups per molecule of dendritic polymer combined with their unique globular architectures leads to large intergallery spacings when intercalated in layered silicates and particularly facile exfoliation in spite of the high molar mass of the dendritic polymer. The excellent processability and potential high reactivity of dendritic polymers makes them extremely promising for thermoset applications, and coatings.

Abstract: A non-aqueous wellbore fluid comprises a non-aqueous continuous phase with one or more organic salts having the formula ((R1-Q)pX)mZn, one or more oligomeric organic salts based on linked ((R1-Q)pX)mZn subunits, or a combination thereof dissolved therein. X is a negatively charged functional group. R1 is an organic group comprising a principal straight chain and one or more side chains which branch from and are shorter than said principal straight chain. Q is a covalent bond or a polar linkage group which connects a terminal atom of the principal straight chain of the organic group R1 to the functional group X. p is a positive integer which is the number of organic groups R1 which are connected to the functional group X. Z is a cation. m and n are positive integers which ensure that the organic salts are charge neutral. The one or more organic salts increase the electrical conductivity of the wellbore fluid.

Abstract: A method and a microscopy imaging apparatus for generating an optically sectioned image of a specimen are provided. The method comprises the steps of: illuminating the specimen with a modulating, spatially periodic illumination pattern; imaging said specimen on a conjugate image plane; acquiring a plurality of signals at respective positions on said image plane, each signal corresponding to the incident light intensity at that position and having an oscillatory component caused by the modulation of the illumination pattern; and measuring a characteristic of the oscillatory component of each of the signals, whereby the measured characteristics when combined in their relative positions generate an optically sectioned image of the specimen.

Abstract: The rapamycin gene cluster is an example of a gene cluster which includes a gene (rapL) leading to the formation of a precursor compound (pipecolic acid, in this case) which is required for inclusion in the larger product (rapamycin) produced by the enzymes encoded by the cluster. We have produced a mutant strain containing a rapamycin gene cluster in which the rapL gene is disabled. The strain does not naturally produce rapamycin but does so if fed with pipecolic acid. By feeding with alternative carboxylic acids we have produced variants of rapamycins. Tests have shown biological activity.

Abstract: A valve comprises a housing (1) having an inlet (4) and an outlet (5), and a pressure sensing port (8). A piston (6) slides in a part (3) of the housing (1) in response to a difference between a first fluid pressure at the pressure sensing port on the one side of the piston, and a second fluid pressure at the inlet and/or outlet on the other side of the piston (6). A valve member (7) carried by the piston is operable thereby to close the inlet (4) when said second fluid pressure is less than a value sufficiently greater than said first fluid pressure. The valve member (7) is movable with respect to the piston (6) to facilitate closing of the inlet (4), in response to a fluid flow from the housing (1) to the inlet (4), when the piston is not acting to close the inlet.

Abstract: Molecular adjuvants are disclosed comprising an antigen presenting cell-targeting ligand linked to an immunogen. In particular, these molecular adjuvants are employed in compositions designed to deliver the specific immunogen to antigen presenting cells and simultaneously deliver signals to those cells that produce the desired immune response. Methods are also disclosed for delivery of these molecular adjuvants to patients, resulting in the transduction of activating signals to the targeted antigen presenting cell, thereby enhancing the immune response to the co-delivered immunogen.
