Patent number: 4244651Abstract: An improved impersonal eyepiece for astronomic positioning is affixed to an optical viewing device to provide a means for observing the position of a celestial object at timed intervals. The viewing device produces a source image of the celestial object and a light source in the eyepiece is energized at timed intervals by a control circuit to illuminate a reticle mask and to thereby superimpose a reticle reference image on the source image during each of the timed intervals. The position of the celestial object with respect to the illuminated reticle is noted during each timed interval and the data so obtained is used to define a reference position.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 1979Date of Patent: January 13, 1981Inventor: Edward F. Patent number: 4186373Abstract: A hollow, projectile-shaped body containing an acoustical transducer is rased into the sea such that the body descends in free fall until it strikes and penetrates the sea floor, coming to a rest therein. Acoustic signals emanating from the acoustic transducer are processed to generate a direct current analog signal which is a function of the acoustical attenuation of the acoustic signals from a time immediately preceding the body striking the sea floor surface until the body comes to rest in the sea floor, thereby obtaining an indication of the physical characteristics of the sea floor.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 1978Date of Patent: January 29, 1980Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventor: John R. Patent number: 4183502Abstract: A chain jack utilizing two chains is operated by alternately transferring e chain load from latches incorporated within an upper latch assembly to latches incorporated within a lower latch assembly while moving the upper and lower latch assemblies away from and toward each other by alternate extension and retraction of a hydraulic ram to cause relative movement between the chain and the lower latch assembly. Actuation of the latch mechanism is controlled by hydraulic connection to a pair of four-way valves operated by a control piston having followers from the four-way valves engageable thereon. The control piston is disposed to move with the upper latch assembly while the followers are rigidly affixed to the lower latch assembly. Thus, the engagement and disengagement of the latch mechanisms with the chains are synchronized by the relative movement between the lower and upper latch assemblies.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 1978Date of Patent: January 15, 1980Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventor: Clifford I. Patent number: 4174875Abstract: A coaxial wet connector for connecting coaxail conductors of electromechaal ocean cables underwater either by a diver or submersible manipulator. The connector comprises a male section having a male inner conductor extending outwards from a concentric male outer conductor and a female section containing a spring biased shuttle piston for receiving the male inner conductor upon mating. An O-ring wiping seal wipes the male inner conductor clean of water as the male inner conductor drives the shuttle piston rearward within a female housing until electrical interconnection between the male and female sections is completed. A pressure compensating bladder removes water trapped adjacent an interconnection surface during mating and returns the water to the interconnection surface during decoupling thereby preventing a hydraulic lock between the male and female sections.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 1978Date of Patent: November 20, 1979Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Jeffrey V.
