    Abstract: A sports racquet frame is built of a composite of laminations of fibrous material as impregnated by a thermosetting resin. The head section of the frame has an upper tube preferably disposed above the string bed plane and a lower tube preferably disposed below the string bed plane. A solid bridge of material integrally joins the upper tube to the lower tube. In a preferred embodiment the bridge is disposed radially exteriorly of the center line of the tubes, to maximize the length of string segments, which are strung to the bridge.

    Abstract: A photosensitive diode has superlattice exclusion region formed from a stack of first and second layers. The first layers are penetrated by minority carriers using quantum mechanical tunneling and reduce minority carrier mobility. The second layers have a sufficiently low bandgap that the tunneling minority carriers can reach an active region of the diode. The process of successively forming first and second layers is repeated until the exclusion region is at least three times the minority carrier diffusion length.

According to the present invention there is provided a method of manufacturing an optical device (40), a device body portion (15) from which the device (40) is to be made including a Quantum Well Intermixing (QWI) structure (30), the method including the step of plasma etching at least part of a surface of the device body portion (5) prior to depositing a dielectric layer (51) thereon so as to introduce structural defects at least into a portion (53) of the device body portion (5) adjacent the dielectric layer (51). The structural defects substanially comprise “point” defects.

    Abstract: In a business network environment, each workstation or information access point (IAP) has installed thereon a quality of service (QoS) module to monitor the IAP's performance. The QoS module declares exceptions when it perceives that one or more of a predetermined plurality of functions or conditions of the computer has entered into a state indicative of degraded performance. At the time that an exception is declared, a snapshot is taken of the software applications running on the IAP, the amount of resources that they are using, and presence or absence of the user. As used in calculating a QoS index representative of the operational state of the IAP, exceptions are weighted to take into account the relative importance of these exceptions and the users which they affect. Because the QoS indices are time-normalized, they may be aggregated or compared across the network by an IT administrator.

The inner portion of the frame include a plurality of undulations that extend towards and away from a ball-hitting surface, the undulations reducing the unintended bunching and wrinkling of material that intermittently forms in the frame during the manufacturing process. The undulations can be varied by location, undulation length, undulation height, and frequency and can be used in racquets made from a variety of materials and methods.

    Abstract: A system (27) for reducing the temperature of cooling oil for a power transformer (12) includes a heat exchanger (44) interposed in the cooling oil system. The heat exchanger (44) relies upon a liquid-to-liquid exchange of heat from the heated oil to a coolant flowing through the heat exchanger. In one embodiment, the coolant provided to the heat exchanger is obtained from an absorption chiller (65). Heat energy is provided to the chiller (65) from a heat storage device (80). In a specific embodiment, the heat storage source (80) can be a phase change material device. In a preferred cooling system, a programmable controller (55) determines the activation and operation of the system. The controller (55) can sense transformer or cooling oil temperature to trigger activation. In a preferred embodiment, the controller (55) compares a current temperature history against a temperature profile to anticipate increased cooling requirements.

In a specific embodiment, the subject connector can have: a housing having at least one bore for receiving an insulated multi-stranded electrical conductor; an electrically conductive prong located in the bore and electrically connected to the housing; and a securing means for insertion into the bore after insertion of the electrical conductor into the bore and onto the prong. Insertion of the securing means into the bore, after insertion of the electrical conductor into the bore and onto the prong, presses the strands of the electrical conductor against the conductive prong such that the connector makes electrical contact with the electrical conductor and acts to mechanically secure the electrical conductor to the connector.

    Abstract: A connector is provided for coupling a single wire electrical cable to an electrical appliance. The connector includes a body portion, a compression collar, and an end cap. The body portion has an elongated axis at one end of which is a battery terminal attaching portion and at the other end of which is a cable receiving portion that has a threaded outer surface and an internally positioned electrically conducive prong for penetrating the end of an electrical cable. The compression collar is sized to fit over an electrical conductor and has gripping fingers for engaging the surface of an electrical conductor. The end cap has an opening through which a cable can be inserted and includes threads on the inner surface for mating with the threads on the body portion. In practice, an electrical conductor is inserted through the opening in the end cap and through the compression collar and impinged onto the conductive prong of the body portion.
