    Abstract: An imaging member comprising an overlayer of material preferably photosensitive, on a softenable, electrostatically deformable layer is imaged by frost or relief wrinkling the deformable layer. In a preferred mode, where the overlayer is photosensitive, wrinkling is caused by uniformly electrostatically charging the member, exposing said member to an imagewise pattern of radiation actinic to said overlayer of photosensitive material and softening the softenable, electrostatically deformable layer to cause it to wrinkle thereby effecting the overlayer in a variety of ways to produce a variety of imaged members.

    Abstract: An electrophoretic imaging process wherein a suspension of particles in a carrier liquid are placed between a photoconductive electrode and a second electrode. With an electrical field applied between the photoconductive electrode and the second electrode the photoconductor is exposed to imagewise radiation which causes particles on the surface of the photoconductive electrode to be driven away in image configuration by charge exchange with the photoconductive electrode. The migrating particles form a negative image on the second electrode leaving a positive image behind on the photoconductive electrode.

    Abstract: A system employing at least one separation roller continuously contacting the outside surface of a web and tracked to move in a fixed approximately elliptical path, for compensating for web motion during separation of the web from another surface to enable a bead of accumulated material built up at the line of contact between the web and the other surface to pass therebetween without changing the web velocity. During the separation period, the advancing velocity of at least one surface is reduced so that at least one surface is advanced at a slower rate than its rate prior to separation, or stopped. In a preferred embodiment, the system is employed in photoelectrophoretic imaging to bypass a bead of imaging suspension built up at the imaging nip during separation of two webs immediately after completion of imaging to thereby permit dissipation or passage of the liquid bead without changing the advancing web velocity by reason of the separation operation.

    Abstract: This invention relates to a method and apparatus for creating high shear stresses in a particulate suspension prior to use of such suspension for imaging or inking. The method and apparatus in one environment function to stress a thin layer of an electrophoretic suspension of particles in a liquid carrier. The prestressed suspension is better suited than unstressed suspensions for preparing both monochromatic and polychromatic copies from originals by particle migration through the suspension when it is exposed to electromagnetic radiation in image configuration while in an electric field across the suspension between two electrodes. The method and apparatus is also used for printing inks in order to form a prestressed, uniform, thin layer of the ink for application to the press.
