  • Patent number: 4973384
Abstract: A heated extended nip press apparatus is disclosed for pressing water from a formed web. The apparatus includes a frame and a backing roll rotatably supported by the press frame. A press device is connected to the press frame and movable relative to the backing roll. The press device cooperates with the backing roll for defining therebetween an extended nip for the passage therethrough of the web. An endless looped blanket extends through the extended nip such that the web is disposed between the blanket and the backing roll. Additionally, the press device includes an arrangement for selectively changing the pressure applied on the blanket along a machine direction relative to a further pressure applied for moving the press device relative to the backing roll such that optimum web properties are obtained and delamination of the pressed web is inhibited. Cross-machine direction recesses in the press shoe enable the shoe to be selectively positioned in the machine direction.

  • Patent number: 4970805
Abstract: A transfer apparatus is disclosed for transferring a tail of a web from a press roll to a dryer of a dryer section. The apparatus includes a lead-in roll which is disposed adjacent to and spaced relative to the press roll for leading the tail of the web from the press roll towards the dryer. A dryer felt extends around the lead-in roll and from the lead-in roll to the dryer such that the tail is supported by the felt from the lead-in roll to the dryer. The felt and the dryer define therebetween a positive air pressure in-going nip.

  • Patent number: 4961968
Abstract: A coater apparatus is disclosed for applying a primary flow of coating material to a moving web of paper. The apparatus includes a frame and a first and a second guide roll rotatably supported by the frame. The first and second guide rolls rotate respectively around first and second rotational axes. The second axis of rotation is disposed spaced and parallel relative to the first axis. A backing blanket extends around and is guided by the guide rolls. The blanket defines an endless loop around the guide rolls such that the web of paper is supported by the blanket during movement of the web from the first guide roll to the second guide roll. The blanket is disposed between the web and the guide rolls. A short dwell coater is disposed adjacent to the web and between the guide rolls for applying the primary flow of coating material to the web.

  • Patent number: 4944844
Abstract: The present invention relates to a press blanket for pressing water from a formed web which extends through an extended nip defined by an elongate press shoe and a cooperating backing roll. The blanket includes a single layer of fiber reinforced urethane which defines an endless loop. The layer cooperates with the press shoe and extends through the extended nip for pressing the water from the formed web. The single layer has an inner and an outer surface and a first and a second edge zone. The inner surface slidably cooperates with the press shoe and is smooth. The inner surface has a diameter which is reproducible to within a predetermined tolerance range. The outer surface defines a plurality of parallel-spaced circumferential grooves for assisting the drainage of water from the formed web during passage of the web between the outer surface and the backing roll.

  • Patent number: 4941950
Abstract: In a headbox of a web forming apparatus, a trailing elemnet device is disclosed for dividing a flow of stock flowing through a slice chamber of the headbox towards a slice lip of the headbox. The trailing element device includes a rectangular sheet having an upstream and a downstream end and a first and a second surface. The upstream end of the sheet is pivotally secured within the slice chamber for dividing the flow of stock into a first and a second current. • Patent number: 4880502
Abstract: A press drying apparatus is disclosed for removing excess water from a formed web by the simultaneous application to the web of elevated temperature and pressure for a prolonged period of time. The apparatus includes a frame and a heated roll rotatably supported by the frame. A shoe is connected to the frame with the shoe cooperating with the heated roll for defining therebetween a first nip for the passage therethrough of the web. A deflection controller is connected to the frame with the controller cooperating with the heated roll for defining therebetween a second nip. The second nip is disposed diametrically opposite to the first nip such that when the web extends through the first nip and the heated roll is heated, deflection of the heated roll towards the second nip is compensated for by the deflection controller.

  • Patent number: 4877472
Abstract: A method of making a bearing blanket for an extended nip press is disclosed. The method includes the steps of wrapping a reinforcing mat with uncured elastomeric polymer around a mandrel such that a central portion of the resultant blanket includes both the reinforcing mat and the elastomeric polymer, while a first and second lateral edge of the blanket includes only elastomeric polymer.
