  • Patent number: 6024305
Abstract: A discharge apparatus for discharging materials from a container onto a field, the apparatus comprising a power discharge device disposed adjacent to a discharge outlet defined by the container, the arrangement being such that when the apparatus is being used to spread the materials onto the field, the materials move from the container through the outlet towards the discharge device. A motor is drivingly connected to the discharge device for rotating the discharge device. A power sensor senses the power used by the motor and a control controls the rate at which the materials are spread. A data storage device associated with the power sensor and the control regulates the control. The arrangement is such that the data storage device dependent on the power sensor regulates the control for controlling the rate at which the materials are discharged so that when the container is moved across the field, the materials are discharged onto the field at a varying rate in order to optimize usage of the materials.

  • Patent number: 5820734
Abstract: A graphite composite trailing element for a headbox of a paper making machine is described. A protective layer is provided at or around pondside edges of a trailing element. The protective layer reinforces the pondside edges of the element to protect the edges from damage. The protective layer can also provide a protective sheath around the edges of the element to help prevent stock from being absorbed between the composites making up the elements. With reinforced edges and a protective sheath, the bonded composite sheets of the element are less susceptible to separation and delamination thereby resulting in an improved graphite composite trailing element. The protective layer can be made from any number of woven fiber glass mesh materials and is embedded in an epoxy base. The protective layer is compatible with the bonding and curing requirements of the composite sheets making up the trailing element.

  • Patent number: 5820732
Abstract: A cleaning apparatus is disclosed for cleaning a forming wire extending around a wire turning roll of a paper machine. The apparatus includes a shower which is disposed upstream relative to the turning roll for spraying a cleaning liquid onto the forming wire. A housing is disposed between the shower and the turning roll, the housing being connected to a source of pressurized air. The housing defines an opening which has a first and a second end. The housing also defines an orifice which has an upstream and a downstream end for permitting a flow therethrough of the pressurized air such that the flow of air is directed against the wire for at least partially removing the cleaning liquid therefrom. The opening cooperates with the turning roll such that the opening conforms with the turning roll for substantially sealing the opening against loss of the pressurized air so that the flow of pressurized air is directed through the orifice.

  • Patent number: 5766422
Abstract: The press section of a papermaking machine has two conventional presses followed by two or three presses including one heated Extended Nip press thereby allowing control of the two-sidedness of the web by balancing the temperature and pressure of the Extended Nip Press with the pressure and temperature of the additional presses to form a one-sided sheet. The use of smooth high temperature press felts can aid in the reduction of two-sidedness of the formed web. The dryer section may alternatively add a fifth press utilizing the first dryer roll as the backing roll, two Extended Nip presses, a heated Extended Nip press followed by a heated conventional press, or a heated Extended Nip press in the third pressing position followed by a conventional heated press utilizing the first dryer as the backing roll.

  • Patent number: 5733415
Abstract: A blanket passes over a concave shoe which is urged against a backing roll to form a press nip. The ends of the blanket are attached to circular heads. The transition from the nip-imposed cardioid shaped to the circular shape maintained by the heads results in a region of the blanket subject to fatigue. The heads are mounted on journals for motion between inboard stops and outboard stops which are spaced apart approximately 4 inches in the cross machine direction. Positioning of the heads on the journals is controlled by four hydraulic pistons mounted between the support beam and each head. Multiple hydraulic systems are controlled to extend the life of the blanket by alternating between holding the back head fixed and letting the front head float and fixing the front head and letting the back head float.

  • Patent number: 5700357
Abstract: The Extended Nip press apparatus of this invention has an endless loop nip blanket which is clamped at each end head by a circular array of twelve clamp segments which are positioned radially by the hydraulic actuation of an axially positionable circumferential clamp ring. The blanket is separately sealed by an air tube seal which extends between the clamp ring and the interior of the blanket. Because the clamping arrangement is independent of the seal, inadvertent loss of air pressure will not cause the blanket to become unclamped.

  • Patent number: 5678367
Abstract: A fastening device is disclosed for fastening siding around an opening defined by a building. The device includes a first and a second J-channel element which co-operate together in an abutting connected angular relationship relative to each other adjacent to the opening. The first element has an exposed portion which defines a miter cut disposed adjacent to the second element. The second element has an exposed face, the arrangement being such that in the vicinity of the miter cut, the exposed portion overlies and conceals the exposed face when the elements are disposed in the aforementioned abutting relationship so that when the siding is installed, the exposed portion and the face of the elements appear to be mitered relative to each other.

  • Patent number: H1789
Abstract: The top and bottom felts at the web transfer between two dryer sections in a single tier papermaking dryer are spaced by pivoting the vacuum roll over which the felt and web move. The vacuum roll is mounted to two pivot arms which are driven by inflatable air rides to alternately incline the roll toward the downstream felt, forming a sandwich of the two felts and the web, and to a spaced position. The short motion of the vacuum roll allows standard felt stretchers to be used, and permits rapid adjustment of the felt spacing.
