    Abstract: An improved implantable medical device and junction between a blood conduit and a blood vessel are disclosed. The device of the present invention provides a connection to a blood vessel that is resistant to occlusion. Resistance to occlusion is achieved by providing an implantable medical junction with: improved and consistent anastomotic geometry and hemodynamics to minimize turbulence and inappropriate shear stresses on the native blood vessels; intraluminal configuration that does not require penetration through to the luminal surface of the blood vessel or the device for anchoring; protection of the native blood vessel from the forces of blood flow in the impact zone and beyond the impact zone; and isolation of injured and traumatized tissues from the lumen of the blood vessel and the device. A cuff is also provided at the junction to reduce blood leakage from the native blood vessel, and to provide additional device anchoring.

    Abstract: A gas absorption rebreather canister containing at least one sheet embodying adsorbent material inside and a portion of the sheet spaced apart by a separating means. The sheet being arranged so that expelled gases entering the canister pass along the canister interior substantially parallel with a surface of the sheet. The sheets can be formed with an internal screen positioned between two gas-permeable, liquid-water resistant membranes and the adsorbent material positioned within interstices between the screen members. Also, the sheets can comprise a sheet of expanded porous PTFE having a microstructure of nodes interconnected with fibrils, said sheet containing gas adsorbent material. The sheet can be covered on each side by a sheet of expanded porous PTFE. This device effectively contains the adsorption material within the sheets even when exposed to liquid water. The result is a rebreather device that is safer, more efficient, and easier to use than any presently on the market.

    Abstract: The present invention is an improved device to aid in the safe removal of casts from a patient. Even with the advent of safe cast removal tools, such as oscillating saws, there remains a distinct risk that a patient's skin will be cut or burned during cast removal. The present invention provides a protective shield that is mounted between the outer shell of a cast and a patient's skin to protect against cut-through and burning of the patient. The preferred protective shield comprises a woven expanded polytetrafluoroethylene fabric that has proven to be highly effective at avoiding cut-through by oscillating saws and the like.

    Abstract: The present invention is an improved tubular device for carrying liquids or gases that is resistant to leakage following a puncture. In its preferred form, the tubular device employs two or more concentrically mounted tube elements that are adapted to move relative to one another following puncture and removal of the puncturing device. This relative movement creates a discontinuous opening through the device that is resistant to fluid leakage. The device may likewise be constructed to cause at least one of the puncture holes to contract, thus further limiting fluid loss. The device of the present invention is particularly useful as an implantable device, such as a vascular graft.

    Abstract: This invention is directed to improved blood contact devices such as vascular prostheses rendered substantially nonthrombogenic through addition of a preserved layer of extracellular subendothelial matrix. The preserved subendothelial matrix layer, which serves as the blood interface of the device, is analogous to the subendothelial matrix layer beneath the endothelium of native vascular surfaces. The device consists of a permanent synthetic base material, preferably porous expanded polytetrafluoroethylene, on which this biologic layer of subendothelial matrix is grown in situ. The biologic layer is produced using in vitro tissue culture methods whereby living cells synthesize and deposit extracellular matrix components, after which the cells are killed and/or removed and the subendothelial matrix layer preserved before implantation. A key aspect of this invention is that no living cells are present in the final configuration, so that the likelihood of recipient immunological response is minimized.

In particularly preferred embodiments, a cover is applied over a portion of the length of the string having a relatively reduced variable mass. The result is that the string has relatively uniform mass along its entire length thereby assuring correct intonation.

Catalytic particles are enmeshed within a highly porous expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) substrate. The use of an expanded PTFE substrate provides added strength to the substrate and provides open and uniform porosity, thus, assuring proper exchange of molecules between the exterior surface of the substrate and the catalytic particles held within it. As such, the present invention is particularly suitable for use as a cross-flow filter for use in ozone generating office equipment (e.g., an electro-static photocopy machine) or similar application requiring minimal pressure drop across the filter unit.

    Abstract: This invention relates to improved blood contact devices such as vascular prostheses rendered antithrombotic through the use of recipient endothelial cells grown on an appropriate subendothelial matrix. The subendothelial matrix layer, which serves as the substratum for growing endothelial cells, may be obtained from either natural donor vessels or from in vitro tissue culture sources. This subendothelial matrix is used in situ on the donor vessel, or is grown or applied to a synthetic component, preferably porous expanded polytetrafluoroethylene. Once this subendothelial matrix is prepared, recipient endothelial cells are seeded onto this matrix substratum, which then serves as the immediate blood contact surface. The endothelial cells may be applied as an intra-operative procedure, or grown on the subendothelial matrix substratum in vitro until the cells establish a confluent monolayer.

The device comprises a pair of tubes of bio-implantable material connected together at a hinge. The device can be quickly and easily applied to a surgical stapler by a surgical team to provide tissue reinforcement. The hinged connection of the device provides both for secure attachment of the device to the surgical stapler, and for a barrier to protect the pivot connection from contamination by migrating tissue during operation. Preferably, tear lines are provided on each of the tubes to assist in removing excess material following attachment of staples. The device allows for fast and safe staple reinforcement and rapid stapler separation and removal following installation.
