  • Patent number: 5953287
Abstract: A method of and apparatus for determining the topography and/or volume of a layer of sludge on the bottom of an oil tank, for example, in which a sonar head having a velocimeter is immersed in the oil, and a fan-shaped beam of acoustic energy is swept across the layer of sludge. Also the velocity of sound in the oil is measured, preferably at a plurality of heights over a relatively short vertical range to determine the velocity gradient, which is then extrapolated for the entire depth of the oil. Processing means determine, from the extrapolated velocity gradient, the topography and/or volume of the sludge. The method provides an accurate indication of the distribution and volume of sludge across the whole of the bottom of an oil tank, taking into account changes in the speed and attenuation of acoustic energy due to, for example, the temperature gradient in the oil.

  • Patent number: 5953714
Abstract: A data base searching system comprises a memory (M) having a plurality of locations for data items (L), a plurality of passive logic circuits (LC), and a control unit (C) for receiving a query data item and in response thereto producing a group of query signals which are aplied to all passive logic circuits (LC) in parallel. The passive logic circuits (LC) simultaneously compare the query data item (as represented by the group of query signals) with the data items held at the respective locations (L), each passive logic circuit (LC) providing an output to indicate if its associated data item passes a selected comparative test relative to the query data item (e.g. equality, inequality, greater than, less than, etc.).

  • Patent number: 5952056
Abstract: Atomized metal is deposited metal onto a substrate so as to cause at least partial solidification of the deposited metal; further atomized metal is deposited onto the partially solidified deposited metal on the substrate; and the metal deposited onto the partially solidified deposited metal is allowed to fully solidify on the substrate; the cooling of the further deposited metal, and the composition of the metal and/or of a gas used in the atomization of the further atomized metal being tailored such that volumetric contraction on solidification and cooling of the further deposited metal is compensated for, when the deposited metal has been cooled to ambient temperature, by volumetric expansion in a reaction or phase change in the further deposited metal.

  • Patent number: 5951771
Abstract: A plasma jet CVD system includes gas injectors and a stand-off ring. The gas injectors have outlet holes preferably flared to approach the expansion angle of the injected jet, thereby keeping the holes substantially free from entrained atomic hydrogen. The injectors are arranged counter-rotational to the swirl of the primary jet, providing a more uniform mixture of hydrocarbons and atomic hydrogen. The stand-off ring provides vents for cooler gases to enter the nozzle, thereby decreasing the overall temperature of the injectors and decreasing the temperature gradient experienced by the injectors, thereby preventing injector cracking. In addition the vents reduce shear, thereby increasing jet velocity and increasing the deposition rate for the coating.

  • Patent number: 5949782
Abstract: A processor of an ATM switch is adapted for inserting a call correlation tag (CCT) information element (parameter) into all call initiating messages (e.g., CALL SETUP or INITIAL ADDRESS) of which it is the source. The CCT is unique over a period of time such that two ongoing calls originating at the same interface cannot have the same CCT. The CCT is stored in memory at the ATM switch with other relevant information regarding the call. After the call initiating message is forwarded through the network, the processor of the destination ATM switch obtains the CCT and stores it in memory with other relevant information regarding the call. After the call is terminated, the stored information along with the CCT is forwarded by each processor to a billing management center. According to one preferred aspect of the invention, the CCT assumes the form of a thirty-two bit value contained in an information element (IE).

  • Patent number: 5946640
Abstract: A method and apparatus for analysing a sample, in which a neural network is trained to correct for measurement drift of a given analytical instrument (e.g., a mass spectrometer). The training is carried out using first and second sets of data obtained by the instrument from samples of known compositions at initial and subsequent instants of time, respectively. The trained neural network is used to transform data, obtained by the instrument from a sample of unknown composition at said subsequent instant of time, to an estimate of the data which would have been obtained by the instrument from that sample at the initial instant of time. The transformed dasta is then analysed to analyse the sample of unknown composition.

  • Patent number: 5941705
Abstract: A manual drive endodontic handpiece includes a housing having proximal end and a distal end provided with an angle head which receives a dental tool. A drive shaft extends through the housing and is coupled to a manual driver such that rotational movement of the manual driver causes rotational movement of the shaft. A pinion gear is provided at the distal end of the drive shaft and enters into the angle head. Rotation of the manual driver relative to the housing causes rotational movement of the pinion gear at the distal end of the shaft. A dental tool provided in the angle head has a head that includes a pinion gear which meshes with the pinion gear at the distal end of the shaft and is rotated by rotational movement of the pinion gear at the distal end of the shaft. The RTLM is provided with a database of configuration and location information about remote sites and has access to the resource database of one or more ATM switches and/or other networking equipment. The RTLM sends configuration messages to ATM switches and/or other networking equipment in order to set up a conference. According to a presently preferred embodiment, the ATM switches are controlled by the RTLM using SNMP (simple network management protocol) via an ETHERNET.TM. connection to the slot controllers of the ATM switches and networking equipment which does not support SNMP are controlled by the RTLM using TCP/IP (transaction control protocol/internet protocol) via an ETHERNET.TM.

  • Patent number: 5936599
Abstract: An LED array circuit includes a number of series connected LED pairs, each pair including two parallel connected oppositely polarized LEDS. The array is coupled to a standard AC voltage source in series with an inductor L having Q>5 and a reactance which is equivalent to the resistance of a current limiting resistor. The use of an inductor in place of a resistor increases the efficiency of the array to approximately 80%. The efficiency of the array is increased even further by coupling a capacitor parallel to the array and by tuning the inductor and capacitor to the frequency of the AC voltage source. According to one embodiment of the invention, a somg;e retro-fittable unit is provided wherein an inductor, a capacitor, and an array of LEDs are contained in a housing having substantially the same size and shape as a standard incandescent bulb or the lens/filter used in a traffic signal display.

  • Patent number: 5933417
Abstract: A multimedia conference reservation controller and reservation acceptance system includes a database of all presently reserved resources on each MMS controlled by the reservation controller which includes an identification of each resource together with the starting time and ending time of the reservation. The acceptance system is designed to accept a reservation query which includes a list of required resources and a list of flexible resources, where flexible resource are considered desirable resources, but not absolutely necessary resources. In response to a reservation query involving a single MMS, the acceptance system accesses the database and builds a list of resources together with the times during which those resources are already reserved. This list is used to create a Resource Availability Matrix which is then analyzed and a list of time periods is generated during which the requested resources are available.

  • Patent number: 5930238
Abstract: Multimedia multipoint conferencing and distance learning sessions utilizing the ATM network use multimedia conferencing equipment at remote sites coupled to the ATM network via ATM network interface switches. All ATM switches are coupled to, and receive control information from a network manager (NM). An application server (AS) is coupled to the NM, and is also coupled to conferencing equipment via an out-of-band connection such as ETHERNET, to which the conferencing equipment is also connected. To establish a multimedia multipoint conference, the AS sends information regarding the participants to the NM. At conference time, the NM establishes a plurality of SPVC multicast trees from each participating site to all other participating sites in the conference, and activates one multicast tree and deactivates all others. An application running on a computer system at a main site tracks requests from remote sites for recognition.
