  • Patent number: 5290424
Abstract: A shaped strip of highly reflective aluminum protected by an anodic oxide coating and a light-permeable fluoropolymer coating which is non-adhesively interstitially mechanically bonded to the microscopic irregularities of the anodic oxide surface. There is no adhesive used to obtain chain entanglement. The highly reflective strip may be substituted for polished stainless steel and/or bi-metal and used under comparably aggressive conditions for a prolonged period without deleteriously affecting the initial D/I (distinctness of reflected image) of the shaped strip. The strip of arbitrary length is shaped in rolling dies so that at least a portion of the strip has a radius of less than 10 mm without damaging or separating the fluoropolymer coating. The specific steps of the claimed process require starting with a clean strip which is brightened to a nearmirror-like finish, then treated to carry a thin porous aluminum oxide coating in a phosphoric acid bath under direct current (DC).

  • Patent number: 5280726
Abstract: The flow rate of molten aluminum through a trough is measured by damming off the trough and diverting the flow through the measuring tube of a magnetic flow meter having a diameter, and located at a level in the trough to create a head of molten aluminum sufficient to produce a flow through the tube which is within the operating range of the meter. The apparatus includes a pair of spaced apart dam members forming a cavity therebetween which is transversed by the measuring tube. The magnet of the flow meter is located in the cavity preferably in a housing through which cooling air is circulated. The electrodes are made of an electrically conductive material which is resistant to corrosion by the molten aluminum, preferably, titanium diboride. Spring biased tapered connections seal the measuring tube with the dam members which have peripheral seals to keep molten aluminum out of the cavity.

  • Patent number: 5277035
Abstract: A refrigerator having multi-compartments and having a heat pipe which transfers heat from a heat source in the refrigeration system to surfaces on the refrigerator which are prone to sweating such as the mullion between compartments. The refrigerator has a gas absorption refrigeration system and the heat pipe is routed from the generator in the system, between the inner and outer shells of the cabinet to the mullion. The heat pipe minimizes condensation of moisture on the external surface of the mullion.

  • Patent number: 5222840
Abstract: An air conveyor moves light objects from one location to another and may also act as an accumulator for storing objects transported thereon. The conveyor has an elongated primary plenum and one or more elongated body members disposed over and in communication with the primary plenum through openings in the bottom wall of each body member. Each body member has a generally planar top deck disposed thereover. Each body member defines a secondary plenum between the top deck and the bottom wall of the body member. The top deck has a plurality of directional orifices formed therein. Blowers in communication with the primary plenum supply air to the secondary plenum through the primary plenum. The air from the secondary plenum is delivered through the directional orifices in the top deck and creates a current, or cushion, of air on which the objects move.

  • Patent number: 5211922
Abstract: A process for recovery of metallic aluminum, sodium and potassium chloride and an aluminum oxide-metallic aluminum product from secondary aluminum dross. A secondary aluminum dross feed is separated by particle size into a first dross portion which is water leached, filtered, evaporated in an evaporator to produce crystallized sodium and potassium chloride salts, magnesium chloride remaining in solution. A purge stream is removed from the evaporator wherein the crystallized salts are separated therefrom. The purge stream is then discharged onto the crystallized salts.

  • Patent number: 5149238
Abstract: A sheet metal end closure for a container of pressurized products, which closure includes a substantially planar central panel, a countersink around the central panel, a chuckwall around the countersink and a seaming flange around the chuckwall. It further includes an annular downwardly stepped portion between the central panel and the countersink and a coined zone in the panel radius which connects the stepped portion to the countersink. The invention includes a method and apparatus for forming such a sheet metal closure wherein the panel radius between the central panel and the countersink is coined around at least a portion of the circumference of the central panel before the periphery of the central panel is reformed. In accordance with this invention, a major portion of the central panel is moved away from the countersink by depressing the outer peripheral portion of the central panel along with the countersink and chuckwall.
