Patent number: 7960184Abstract: The present invention provides an active assay method for detecting a biological analyte. According to the method, a probe molecule is immobilized on a surface. An analyte is then placed in fluidic connection with the probe molecule on the surface. A force is then applied to the analyte to move it toward the surface to facilitate contact and possibly binding of the analyte to the probe. Optionally, another force can be applied or the force can be reversed, to remove unbound or weakly bound analyte from the surface. Analyte that remains bound to the surface is then detected. The detection can include rolling or sliding beads over an analyte and/or probe on a substrate, and detecting bound beads. The present invention furthermore, provides devices, such as electrophoresis apparatuses and biochip assemblies, for carrying out the methods of the invention.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 2003Date of Patent: June 14, 2011Assignee: George Mason Intellectual Properties, Inc.Inventors: Victor Morozov, Tamara Morozova

Patent number: 7890266Abstract: The present invention introduces an innovative data mining technique to identify precursory signals associated with earthquakes. It involves a multistrategy approach that employs one-dimensional wavelet transformations to identify singularities in data, and analyzes the continuity of wavelet maxima in time and space to determine the singularities that could be precursory signals. Surface Latent Heat Flux (SLHF) data may be used. A single prominent SLHF anomaly may be found to be associated some days prior to a main earthquake event.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 2009Date of Patent: February 15, 2011Assignee: George Mason Intellectual Properties, Inc.Inventors: Guido Cervone, Menas Kafatos, Domenico Napoletani, Ramesh P. Patent number: 7824927Abstract: Analytes using an active assay may be detected by introducing an analyte solution containing a plurality of analytes to a lacquered membrane. The lacquered membrane may be a membrane having at least one surface treated with a layer of polymers. The lacquered membrane may be semi-permeable to nonanalytes. The layer of polymers may include cross-linked polymers. A plurality of probe molecules may be arrayed and immobilized on the lacquered membrane. An external force may be applied to the analyte solution to move the analytes towards the lacquered membrane. Movement may cause some or all of the analytes to bind to the lacquered membrane. In cases where probe molecules are presented, some or all of the analytes may bind to probe molecules. The direction of the external force may be reversed to remove unbound or weakly bound analytes. Bound analytes may be detected using known detection types.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 2006Date of Patent: November 2, 2010Assignee: George Mason Intellectual Properties, Inc.Inventors: Victor Morozov, Charles L. Bailey, Melissa R. Evanskey

Patent number: 7800616Abstract: Using stochastic directed graphs, a social network stochastic directed graph model allows for policy analysis and action. An activity generator may be used for creating agents that represent a population stratum. Agents may be proportionally selected to the size of the population stratum and representative activities that are associated with said population stratum. Agents have one or more conditional probabilities attached to the activities, which indicate the likelihood of interaction between agents and one or more agents or actors. Outcomes for the interactions may be accumulated. Based on these outcomes, which include benign and acute, a multinomial probability distribution may be estimated.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 2007Date of Patent: September 21, 2010Assignee: George Mason Intellectual Properties, Inc.Inventors: Yasmin H. Patent number: 7702597Abstract: Crop yield may be assessed and predicted using a piecewise linear regression method with break point and various weather and agricultural parameters, such as NDVI, surface parameters (soil moisture and surface temperature) and rainfall data. These parameters may help aid in estimating and predicting crop conditions. The overall crop production environment can include inherent sources of heterogeneity and their nonlinear behavior. A non-linear multivariate optimization method may be used to derive an empirical crop yield prediction equation. Quasi-Newton method may be used in optimization for minimizing inconsistencies and errors in yield prediction. Minimization of least square loss function through iterative convergence of pre-defined empirical equation can be based on piecewise linear regression method with break point. This non-linear method can achieve acceptable lower residual values with predicted values very close to the observed values.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 2005Date of Patent: April 20, 2010Assignee: George Mason Intellectual Properties, Inc.Inventors: Ramesh P. Patent number: 7650024Abstract: The invention provides for a technique of extracting information from signals by allowing a user to select a classifier and a figure of merit for quantifying classification quality; select a transform to generate features from input data; use a recursive process of functional dissipation to generate dissipative features from features that are generated according to the transform; search for one or more dissipative features that maximize the figure of merit on a training set; and classify a test set with the classifier by using one or more of the dissipative features. Functional dissipation uses the transforms recursively by generating random masking functions and extracting features with one or more generalized matching pursuit iterations. In each iteration, the recursive process may modify several features of the transformed signal with the largest absolute values according to a specific masking function.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 2006Date of Patent: January 19, 2010Assignee: George Mason Intellectual Properties, Inc.Inventors: Domenico Napoletani, Daniele Carlo Struppa, Timothy DuWayne Sauer

Patent number: 7368288Abstract: The invention contemplates a method for recognition of proteins and other biological molecules by imaging morphology, size and distribution of crystalline and amorphous dry residues in droplets (further referred to as “crystallization pattern”) containing predetermined amount of certain crystal-forming organic compounds (reporters) to which protein to be analyzed is added. It has been shown that changes in the crystallization patterns of a number of amino-acids can be used as a “signature” of a protein added. It was also found that both the character of changer in the crystallization patter and the fact of such changes can be used as recognition elements in analysis of protein molecules.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 2006Date of Patent: May 6, 2008Assignee: George Mason Intellectual Properties, Inc.Inventors: Victor Morozov, Charles L.
