Abstract: We describe an ultra-small resonant structure that produces electromagnetic radiation (e.g., visible light) at selected frequencies that can also be used or formed in conjunction with passive optical structures. The resonant structure can be produced from any conducting material (e.g., metal such as silver or gold). The passive optical structures can be formed from glass, polymer, dielectrics, or any other material sufficiently transparent using conventional patterning, etching and deposition techniques. The passive optical structures can be formed directly on the ultra-small resonant structures, or alternatively on an intermediate structure, or the passive optical structures can be formed in combination with other passive optical structures.

Abstract: A handle device for an infant car seat includes a handle member and a pad. The handle member has two ends coupled respectively to two opposite sides of the infant car seat, and an inner surface formed with a positioning groove. The pad is disposed within the positioning groove in the handle member, and has a coupling face confronting the inner surface of the handle member, and a soft contact face opposite to the coupling face.

Abstract: An underwater power generating system includes an underwater power generating device, a closed nacelle and a connecting cable system that is provided with an open passage way extending there along that is sealed at one end to the interior of the closed nacelle. The cable system can be used in a number of ways, such as by having the second end being sealed, to prevent air from escaping the closed nacelle, or by having the second end connected to a source of positive pressure thereby permitting the cable to be sufficiently pressurized to provide a positive pressure internally within the closed nacelle that is at least slightly greater than the nacelle at depth pressure, and thus greater than water pressure acting on the exterior of the closed nacelle, to prevent water ingress within the nacelle, as well as to transmit power and/or other data between the nacelle and shore monitoring and control facilities.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of and arrangement for removing contaminants from a surface of a substrate by subjecting said substrate surface to an atmospheric pressure glow plasma. Said plasma is generated in a discharge space comprising a plurality of electrodes, by applying an alternating plasma energizing voltage to said electrodes causing a plasma current and a displacement current. Said plasma is stabilised by controlling said displacement current during plasma generation such that modification of properties of said substrate surface is prevented.

Abstract: A method of raising a building with respect to the ground; the method including the steps of: forming a mat having a number of through holes; inserting a foundation pile through each hole; fitting each foundation pile with a lifting device; exerting thrust on the foundation piles by means of the lifting devices to raise the building with respect to the ground; and fixing each foundation pile axially to the mat once the building is raised; the lifting devices are divided into three equivalent, symmetrical, independent work groups; and the lifting devices of one work group at a time are activated simultaneously, so that the building is raised isostatically, by simultaneously activating the lifting devices of one work group at a time, while the lifting devices of the other two work groups are left idle.

Abstract: A compound abdominal and upper body exercising device having an outer frame, an inner mechanism that is pivotally connected within the outer frame and on which a user kneels to initiate the exercise, a linkage system between the outer frame and the inner mechanism that interconnects an actuating assembly and the inner mechanism, and a weight support system connected to the inner mechanism.

Abstract: A play yard includes a first frame unit and a bassinet-supporting second frame unit. The first frame unit includes a plurality of spaced-apart upright rods, a plurality of corner couplers that are provided respectively on the upright rods, and a plurality of side rods, each interconnecting a pair of the corner couplers. The second frame unit includes a plurality of connecting rods, each having a supporting segment and a pair of bent end segments that are connected respectively to longitudinally opposite ends of the supporting segment, and that are connected movably and respectively to a pair of the corner couplers, such that each of the connecting rods is selectively positioned relative to the first frame unit at a lower position and a higher position located above the lower position.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a magneto-electric field effect transistor comprising a channel region, a source connected to one side of the channel region and adapted to inject electrons into the channel region, a drain connected to the opposite side of the channel region and adapted to detect spin polarized electrons; and a gate comprising at least one magnetic double pair element comprising four magnetic elements each magnetic element being adapted to induce a magnetic field into the channel region, wherein the total induced magnetic field of the magnetic double pair element is controllable to be substantially zero, and wherein the gate is further adapted to induce an electrical field into the channel region.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for updating security association database entries in a system having multiple security channels by selectively granting access to the entries by a plurality of the multiple security channels that may need to update the same entry using a first-come, first-served scheme. The apparatus includes a controller circuit that functions to carry out the method which, for each of the multiple security channels, includes determining whether another of the security channels has a higher priority to access a particular security association database entry. If no other channel has a higher priority, then the channel requesting access to the entry retrieves it from its address location, modifies it, and writes the modified entry back to its address location. The controller prevents other channels from simultaneously, or substantially simultaneously, retrieving and modifying the same entry.

Abstract: A mechanical restraining system for use in situations where it is desirable to restrain a detainee, such as a prisoner, psychiatric patient or accused criminal defendant, while minimizing the ability of the public or certain courtroom participants to readily observe that the detainee has been placed in or is being held by some type of restraining device.

Abstract: In a data processing system, a method includes deleting a particular copy of a data item when at least one other copy of the data item is available. The presence of another copy of the data item is determined, at least in part, based on an identifier for the data item, the identifier having been computed using all of the data in the data item and only the data in the data item, wherein two identical data items in the data processing system will have identical identifiers. The particular copy of the data item may be deleted if another copy of the data is determined to be present on another processor in the system or on the same processor. The identifier of the data item is computed using a function such as a message digest or hash function which may be: MD4, MD5, or SHA.

Abstract: A method of distributing a data item to a plurality of computers in a network of computers. A data item is divided into a plurality of segments. Each segment is stored on at least one computer in said network. A list of computers onto which each of said segments has been stored is maintained. When a data item is requested, its component segments are obtained from at least two computers in the network. Some of the computers may form a peer-to-peer network.

Abstract: Similarity of data items is determined by analyzing corresponding segments of the data items. A function is applied to each segment of a data item and the output of that function is compared to the output of the same function applied to a corresponding segment of another data item. A function may be applied to the output of the functions. The functions may be hash or message digest functions.

Abstract: A sponsor purchases a prepaid card that can be transmitted to an intended user with increased security. Using a prepaid card dispenser, the sponsor elects an amount for the prepaid card and is prompted for at least one telephone number at which a server platform should contact the sponsor when the intended user wants to authenticate the card. The sponsor may enter additional phone numbers that will be called if the sponsor does not answer the first number when called by the server platform. When an intended user has received the prepaid card, the intended user calls a telephone number associated with the server platform and is connected to the sponsor via a telephone bridge so that the sponsor may authenticate the intended user. The sponsor may then inform the server platform (e.g., via DTMF tones) that the card has been authenticated.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a mirror system for a vehicle, said mirror system having a viewing surface for being operable as a mirror, said mirror system comprising a specular reflective surface and means for controlling an amount of light transmitted between said specular reflective surface and said viewing surface, said means for controlling said amount of light transmitted comprising at least one transmission control element and control means for controlling said transmission control element, characterised in that said transmission control element is an electrowetting element. The present invention is further directed to a method of operating said mirror system.

Abstract: A nipple reconstruction device includes a core component having a substantially circular hollow opening therein for receiving a person's nipple; padding attached to a lower part of the core and substantially lining the lower part of the core and at least a portion of the hollow opening in the core, and an attaching component constructed and adapted to hold the device in place on the person's skin. The core may be a semi-rigid, pliable, high durometer material. The padding may be gauze, woven rayon cellulose, cotton, a cotton/polyester blend material; or a non-woven, one-sided medical tape. The attaching component may be an adhesive tape having a plurality of tabs for holding the device in place on the person's skin.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a three-pass heat exchanger for an EGR system, comprising a casing housing at least one cooling chamber for gas circulating through a plurality of pipes and heads on its ends coupled to the gas inlet pipe coming from the exhaust manifold and to the gas outlet pipe connected to the intake manifold of the engine, which is configured as a three-pass heat exchanger, i.e. with three differentiated areas for gas circulation from the inlet pipe to the outlet pipe, the inlet pipe and the outlet pipe being located at opposite ends of the exchanger. The exchanger can include a bypass valve and two cooling chambers at different temperatures.

Abstract: An exhaust system for an internal combustion engine, which is provided with a feeding pipe of fresh air to an intake manifold and with a turbocharger arranged along the feeding pipe; the exhaust system displays: an emission pipe for releasing the exhaust gases produced by the internal combustion engine into the atmosphere; at least one gas treatment device, which is arranged along the emission pipe and consists of an oxidizing catalyzer and an anti-particulate filter; and a recirculation circuit, which displays a recirculation pipe which is regulated by a recirculation valve and connects the emission pipe downstream of the treatment device to the intake pipe upstream of a compressor of the turbocharger to introduce into the intake pipe a certain amount of exhaust gases present in the emission pipe; along the recirculation pipe a filter consisting of a metallic mesh arranged to close the recirculation pipe is arranged.

Abstract: A non-volatile memory cell and related system utilize ferroelectric capacitors as data storage elements. Circuitry is provided for writing to a single ferroelectric capacitor storage element, as well as to dual storage elements operating inversely. The storage elements are read by use of a sense amplifier in a configuration which automatically restores the original data states, thereby eliminating the need for a subsequent restore operation. Memory systems are described which include circuitry for driving bit lines, word lines and drive lines to accomplish both the write and read operations.

Abstract: A method and apparatus of discovering and installing managed appliances remotely using a protocol for communication on the network is described. The protocol permits a client workstation to issue a broadcast message on the network. The managed appliances will send a reply message to the workstation which includes their current IP configuration. If a managed appliance has not been properly configured, the workstation can remotely instruct the managed appliance to set its IP configuration as desired. In the event that the managed appliance is a KVM switch, the managed appliance can store information about the servers connected to it. This information can be requested by and reported to the workstation using the protocol.
