  • Patent number: 5386345
Abstract: A knitted or braided electromagnetic shielding material is formed by interweaving metallic or metal-clad wire rods, and each wire rod has a solder-plated layer on its surface. By heating the knitted or braided material, the wire rods are securely soldered to one another, thus preventing the knitted or braided material from loosening or disentangling, Furthermore, the contact resistance between the wire rods is reduced by the solder connections, thus enhancing the electromagnetic shielding effect of the knitted or braided material and further causing no difference in the electromagnetic shielding effect of the knitted or braided material in relation to its weaving direction. An electromagnetic shielding gasket clad with the knitted or braided material can be easily secured to a housing of electronic components, by using the solder-plated layers of the wire rods to melt the gasket thereto.

  • Patent number: 5381736
Abstract: A projectile is provided with an axially passage extending from the rear surface of the projectile and offset from the longitudinal axis of the projectile. A plurality of symmetrically arranged radially extending passages are arranged around the periphery of the projectile and intersect at the longitudinal axis and with the inner end of the axially extending passage to form passageways through the projectile for gradually releasing propellent gas from the barrel of the gun, to the atmosphere, as the projectile passes out the end of the barrel, thereby decreasing the recoil of the firearm.

  • Patent number: 5382041
Abstract: A method of connecting a trailer with a rigid drawbar and at least one centrally positioned axle to a tow vehicle is described. The method includes the following described steps. Firstly, connect the trailer drawbar to an intermediate hitch support having rotatably mounted ground engaging wheels, such that the hitch weight is borne by the intermediate hitch support. Secondly, pivotally connect an intermediate drawbar to the trailer drawbar for movement about a transverse horizontal axis. Thirdly, connect the intermediate drawbar to a hitch support mounted on a tow vehicle, such that a towing force is transmitted through the intermediate drawbar to the trailer drawbar. Fourthly, couple the tow vehicle and the intermediate hitch support through a pair of spaced apart steering arms. The steering arms have tow vehicle ends and intermediate hitch support ends. The tow vehicle ends are spaced equidistant from an intermediate drawbar hitch point on the tow vehicle hitch support.

  • Patent number: 5380510
Abstract: This invention provides a method for manufacturing silica gels in a form of scales or needles having a pore volume and a specific surface area being relatively large and being controlled. Silicic acid sol is frozen, crystallized and deposited in gaps among crystal faces of crystals of solvent of the sol, thus obtaining the frozen silica hydrogels in the form of scales or needles. After unfreezing the frozen silica hydrogels, a hydrothermal polymerization is carried out. Subsequently, the silica hydrogels are dried, thus obtaining the silica gels in the form of scales or needles. Furthermore in the invention, by controlling the gelation time period of silica sol, the silica gels with their configuration controlled can result from even inexpensive silica sol. The invention has the advantage that a freeze-drying step is not required: just through freezing, unfreezing, washing and hydrothermal polymerization steps, the physical properties of the silica gels can be controlled.

  • Patent number: 5380293
Abstract: An intravenous infusion set for administering drugs to a patient, typically in an operating theatre or under intensive care conditions. The infusion set is of the winged needle type and it has been developed with the object of reducing the risk of so-called needlestick injury for medical professionals. The infusion set incorporates a hypodermic needle to which infusant is delivered and the needle is located within a small diameter cannula in the form of a plastics material sleeve which is intended to be inserted into a patient's vein. The needle is slidable axially between two limiting positions within the sleeve such that, when in a first of the positions, a sharp tip end of the needle projects beyond the sleeve and, when in the second position, the sharp tip end of the needle is retracted relative to the sleeve and is located wholly within the sleeve. In use of the infusion set, after the needle has been inserted into a vein the tip end of the needle is retracted into and remains within the sleeve.

  • Patent number: 5380549
Abstract: A method for providing a traffic surface such as a path, roadway, passageway, deck, or airfield runway or taxiway with both anti-slip and retro-reflective characteristics. A first coating of paint is applied to the surface, solid particles are distributed onto the first coating such that the particles sink partially into the first coating, and a second coating of paint is applied over the particles and the first coating to lock the particles into the first coating with the particles projecting from the second coating. Before the second coating is set, retro-reflective beads are distributed over the second coating to sink partially into the second coating between the projecting particles. The beads are bonded into the second coating and project from the second coating. The beads are smaller than the particles and the particles project from the second coating by more than the beads to overshadow the beads.

  • Patent number: 5377771
Abstract: A sealed bearing assembly used in earth drilling is described having a first tubular member and a second tubular member telescopically received in the first tubular member. The second tubular member has an interior passage through which drilling fluids pass under pressure from surface pumps. A clearance space is provided between the first tubular member and the second tubular member defining a lubricant filled sealed chamber. The sealed chamber has a bit end sealed by a bit end seal which faces a drill bit and a pump end sealed by a pump end seal which faces surface pumps. A fixed mechanical seal is disposed in the sealed chamber intermediate the pump end seal and the drill bit end seal. The mechanical seal divides the sealed chamber into a pump end portion and a drill bit end portion. The pump end seal is responsive to pressure exerted by drilling fluids pumped along the interior passage by surface pumps.

  • Patent number: 5377719
Abstract: A pneumatic valve, designed to control/pressurize a membrane pump, compresses a valve body (1) having gates (8-12) for compressed-air-flow/operation/pressurization of said pump. The valve body is closed by ends (2), between which a plunger (5) is to move between two end positions. The ends of the plunger and the ends of the valve body co-operate physically magnetically in order to generate just and only a retaining force, which constitutes a threshold for a certain minimum control pressure from a control-air-gate (13 or 14) and guarantees a rapid initial movement as well as a rapid transfer of the plunger to its opposite end position. Permanent magnets (15) are inserted in said plunger ends and/or in said valve body ends and designed to co-operate with projections and/or processes (17,18,20) in the opposite member in order to obtain a so-called air-cushion-damping.

  • Patent number: 5375373
Abstract: A grille for security institutions consists of a body having two opposed faces. At least one passage extends through the body between the opposed faces. The passage has at least two changes in direction defining a generally zig zag course. When a rope is inserted into the passage the series of direction changes severely limit the ability of a person to thread the rope through the passage.

  • Patent number: 5375168
Abstract: A scrambling method wherein each image line (23-309) of a frame having been produced in unscrambled form before being scrambled, is given the pseudorandomly determined address (B) of the memory line in the storage memory (8) in which said image line is to be stored on reception; and wherein the moment (or the running order) for broadcasting said image line is determined so that on reception, the image line causes, because it is stored in the memory line to which it was addressed, the image line previously stored at the same address to be output to the television set at the right moment (or in the right order) so that an unscrambled picture is reconstructed.
