Patent number: 4743354Abstract: A waxy hydrocarbon feedstock is converted into a product hydrocarbon of reduced normal paraffin content by either dewaxing or hydrodewaxing the feedstock in the presence a dewaxing or hydrodewaxing catalyst under conditions such that the normal paraffin content of the feedstock is reduced by selectively converting waxy paraffins into lower molecular weight hydrocarbons. At least a portion of the effluent from the dewaxing or hydrodewaxing zone is then passed to a hydrocracking zone where it is contacted with a hydrocracking catalyst in the presence of hydrogen under conditions such that a further reduction in the normal paraffin content is effected. When the desired product is a lube oil base stock, the overall conversion of components in the feed boiling above about 650.degree. F. to components boiling at or below about 650.degree. Patent number: 4739833Abstract: Subterranean formations at temperatures above 250.degree. F. are acidized by introducing a solution of a halogenated hydrocarbon and an organic solvent and allowing the halogenated hydrocarbon to hydrolyze in an aqueous medium to form a hydrohalic acid. Corrosion of metals, e.g., well casing, is inhibited by the presence of the solvent. The acidizing solution can be introduced as a liquid or as a mist in a substantially anhydrous gas. The aqueous medium can be naturally present in the formation or can be introduced into the formation as a liquid or as a foam simultaneously with the acidizing solution.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 1986Date of Patent: April 26, 1988Assignee: Union Oil Company of CaliforniaInventors: David J. Patent number: 4731174Abstract: Hydrocarbon feedstocks containing relatively high levels of nitrogen contaminants are converted to products of lower average molecular weight by first mixing the feedstock with a dicarboxylic acid such as oxalic acid and then contacting the resultant mixture with a cracking catalyst in a cracking zone under cracking conditions in the substantial absence of added molecular hydrogen. The use of a dicarboxylic acid in lieu of a mineral acid such as sulfuric acid or nitric acid results in less corrosion to FCC unit internals and less emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides from the FCC unit regenerator.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1987Date of Patent: March 15, 1988Assignee: Union Oil Company of CaliforniaInventors: Mario L. Patent number: 4727657Abstract: An apparatus for contacting solids with gases, preferably a needle coke preheater, which includes an elongated housing having an entrance and an exit and means for introducing solids into the entrance of the housing. A bed support divides the housing into an upper chamber and a lower chamber and is declined from the horizontal at an angle such that the solids introduced into the entrance of the housing slide down the bed support toward the exit of the housing. The bed support contains a plurality of openings distributed between two solid rectangular borders which serve as the two long parallel sides of the bed support. The openings are sufficiently large so that gases can flow from the lower chamber in contact with the solids and then into the upper chamber. The solid rectangular borders prevent preferential flow of the gases up the walls of the housing by forcing the gases to flow toward the center of the bed support.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 1986Date of Patent: March 1, 1988Assignee: Union Oil Company of CaliforniaInventor: Robert E. Miller
