  • Patent number: 5251999
Abstract: The invention pertains to a self-contained, mobile, pavement repair apparatus. A self-propelled, wheeled vehicle is described, upon which are mounted a material supply hopper, a debris storage, an overhead crane arm, and an articulated conveyor arm. Mounted on the business end of the crane arm are various implements for performing pavement repair, all of which are remotely controlled by a single user in an enclosed cab. Asphalt or concrete patching material is transported by an auger from the tiltable supply hopper to an articulated conveyor arm, which conveyor arm deposits the material upon the repair area. The user remotely controls the overhead crane arm in order to position and actuate, from the cab, the various repair implements. All apparatus functions, materials and safety devices necessary to complete the repair process may be operated by a single user.

  • Patent number: 5250417
Abstract: A method is provided for rapidly determining the ability of sperm to undergo the acrosome reaction, using fluorescence microscopy, light microscopy or color change on a dot blot assay to determine the relative percentage of acrosome reacted sperm. Sperm are capacitated through use of bromelain or other enzymatic substances capable of capacitating sperm, with the total incubation time required to induce capacitation as little as fifteen minutes, yielding sperm that are fully capacitated and show excellent motility, with as many as 80% of normal sperm consistently induced to acrosome react.

  • Patent number: 5234225
Abstract: A hydraulically, pneumatically, electrically, or engine operated motorcycle center stand assembly having a ground-contacting lower stand unit rotatable about an axis on an upper stand unit. Parking is accomplished by rotation of said lower stand into said ground-contacting position, followed by downward pivoting of said upper stand unit, thereby raising said rear end of said motorcycle. The stand is raised by reversing the sequence. Ground contacting area, stand width, and stability are increased while simultaneously retaining maximum road clearance.

  • Patent number: 5227783
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a microprocessor based telemetry apparatus and method utilizing a commercially available IBM PC-AT or compatible CPU. Three hardware cards fit in existing slots within the computer chassis. Software is provided to accomplish, in combination with the cards, what has essentially required a mainframe computer heretofore. The microcomputer is equipped with novel hardware and software to provide PCM bit synchronizer/decoder, decommutator, time code reader and digital-to-analog converter functions. Data is stored in real time using interleaved buffers, novel software and a hard disk. Data can be archived on digital tape. Data logging can be carried out at sustained rates approaching 2 million bits per second, up to six times faster than with MS-DOS yet files are accessible with MS-DOS. Real-time data scaling and display of up to 128 separate parameters are accomplished.

  • Patent number: 5221159
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for removing contaminants from soil and an associated subsurface groundwater aquifer. An injection well(s) is drilled through the vadose zone to a depth below the water table defining the upper boundary of the aquifer. An extraction well is established to a depth above the water table. Oxygenated gas is injected under pressure through the injection well while a vacuum is applied to the extraction well. Contaminants are removed from the groundwater aquifer and from the vadose zone by a combination of physical, chemical, and biochemical processes. Additional biochemical cleansing may occur at ground level prior to venting of extracted, contaminated air. Relatively pure liquid contaminant may be extracted simultaneously with cleansing of the soil above the aquifer. Microbes natural to the contaminated site are extracted, analyzed, fermented, and reintroduced to enhance biodegradation.

  • Patent number: 5209449
Abstract: The invention concerns apparatuses and methods for hanging frames upon mounting surfaces. The apparatus of the invention, upon which a frame is hung, is securely attached to a mounting surface, such as a wall. The apparatus comprises a generally planar body with protruding supporting rail, alignment notches, spirit level, bracket recess, and mounting holes. The apparatus is particularly well suited for use with metal frames with universal assembly channels. The supporting rail of the apparatus is designed to be inserted within universal assembly channels in metal frames, thus securely yet slidably and removably attaching the apparatus to the frame.

  • Patent number: 5205289
Abstract: An optimized dose delivery system using computer graphics simulation techniques and computerized numerical optimization. A volume, such as a tumor volume, is graphically simulated and meshed with node points. The dose delivery is calculated depending upon input variables, deriving an objective function related to dose efficacy. A numerical optimization algorithm optimizes the input variables based upon such objective function.

  • Patent number: 5204908
Abstract: A multichannel sound system comprising a plurality of microphones and loudspeakers. Rate controlled, variable attenuation of the audio signal is provided as a function of loudspeaker and microphone proximity. The use of optical isolators or analog switches with RC delay circuits to control the rate of attenuation eliminates objectionable switching transients. Selective attenuation of loudspeakers in proximity to active microphones eliminates audio feedback.

  • Patent number: 5201609
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a process and apparatus wherein municipal refuse, and many other types of solid waste, are disposed of in a landfill repository that maintains them in a dry state indefinitely. This eliminates most environmental and many cost problems. The principal design feature of this landfill is its cellular internal structure, which has rows of contiguous, rectangular water- and gas-tight cells that are built on top of one another to form a high, multi-layered structure. These cells are simultaneously constructed and filled with solid waste in a series of short, incremental wall berm construction and filling steps on a one-cell-at-a-time basis in the top layer of the landfill.
