  • Patent number: 5934143
Abstract: An apparatus for limiting deflection of the armature shaft 38, 38', 103 of an electrically powered tool, such as a hand held saw 10 or drill 91. In saw 10, the armature shaft 38, 38'extends as a cantilever from the motor 14 and has a geared connection 58, 60 to an arbor 44 for driving the saw blade 18. An arrangement for limiting the deflection of the armature shaft 38, 38' comprises a pilot member 72, 84 and a socket 68, 82 associated, respectively, with one and the other of the armature shaft and a motor housing supported wall. The socket 68, 82 is larger in cross-section than that of the pilot member 72, 84 and limits transverse deflection of the armature shaft 38, 38' away from its axis of rotation A. If the saw 10 stalls in the material being cut, force is transmitted from the geared connection 58, 60 to the armature shaft 38, 38'.

  • Patent number: 5885146
Abstract: A dual function powered oscillating hand tool comprises a driven unit having an electric motor and a first drive shaft; an eccentric bearing mounted on the first drive shaft with a radial offset e relative to the first drive shaft; a second drive shaft mounted on the eccentric bearing and terminating in a flange and a drive spigot; a sanding shoe; and a location hole positioned on the backing face of the sanding shoe for location of the second drive shaft and means to restrict the random orbit of the sanding shoe to a regular orbit. The drive spigot has a diameter d.sub.1 adjacent to the flange face and a maximum diameter d.sub.2 at its free end and the location hole has a diameter d.sub.3 at the backing face and a diameter d.sub.4 at the face adjacent to the working face of the shoe, andd.sub.1 =d.sub.3 -c.sub.1d.sub.2 =d.sub.4 -c.sub.2 andd.sub.2 =d.sub.3 -(2e-c.sub.1)where c.sub.

  • Patent number: 5885144
Abstract: A sanding apparatus (1) is provided with a platen (2) formed of several layers and with a flat surface to which an abrasive sheet is attached. The platen (2) has a peripheral edge (7) with at least one point (4). A conductive means (18, 20) is provided through the layers of the platen (2) to act as a heat sink adjacent to the point (4) to remove heat from the surface point (4).

  • Patent number: 5879227
Abstract: A sanding apparatus (1) has a sanding platen (2) to which motion is applied. The platen (2) has a flat surface (9) to which an abrasive sheet (22) is applied. The peripheral edge (3) of the platen (2) has a point (4) which can be used for detailed sanding. The surface (9) has a detachable portion (14) adjacent the point (4). The detachable portion (14) can be removed from the remainder of the platen (2) and rotated through 180.degree.. The abrasive sheet (22) can have an area corresponding to the detachable portion (14) of the surface (9) which is removable from the remainder of the abrasive sheet (22) by means of a perforated line (24).
