Abstract: Material for the production of hydraulic cements or for pozzolanic materials which develop cementatious characteristics after blending with an activator, is treated in an expanded precessive plasma in a plasma reactor of the type in which at least one plasma gun orbits about a vertical axis and is directed obliquely to said axis towards a counter electrode. The material preferably includes at least a proportion of a naturally occurring carbonaceous material of low calorific value, such as colliery spoil, oil shale or oil sand. In such case, as the material emerges from the plasma it is preferably contacted with air to effect combustion of the combustible material. The thermal energy thus released is recovered by suitable instrumentalities and is preferably converted to electrical energy to power the plasma reactor.

Abstract: An electric resistance furnace adapted for operation at about 1,800.degree. C. or higher temperatures even in an oxidizing or neutral atmosphere is disclosed. The furnace has a cylindrical heating chamber defined by a generally cylindrical heating element made of ceramic material, such as zirconium oxide and lanthanum chromide. The heating element has a wall thickness which is very small at its middle section and gradually increases toward each end. The middle section of the heating element defines the useful part of the heating chamber into which the heat generated by the heating element is effectively concentrated. An electrode comprising an annular foil of platinum is provided at each end of the heating element to pass electric current therethrough.
Abstract: An apparatus for generating message unit pulses for message rate billing which includes means responsive to answer pulse recognition signals and electronic answer supervision from a central office for providing separate and variable numbers of pulses per event based on duration, time of day and distance of call.
Abstract: Pure oxygen or a gas containing more oxygen than air is injected under pressure into sewage held in or flowing through a sewer. This injection can be used to prevent the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the sewer falling to a level at which there occurs bacterial reduction to hydrogen sulfide of sulfate present in the sewage. The injection can also be used to oxidize to sulfur any sulfide dissolved in the sewage. The pure oxygen or the gas containing more oxygen than air may be injected into sewage flowing through a sewage pipe forming part of a gravity sewer, into a pump used to transfer the sewage through the sewer, or into a part of the sewer where sewage is collected before being transferred through the sewer.
Abstract: A clamp for securing together in locked relationship a pair of telescoped pipes or tubes. The clamp consists of a novel U-bolt having a swaged flat rim on the inner portion of its bight which reduces the radius of the bight portion, and a novel saddle member having a semicircular cut-out and being further chamfered adjacent the ends of the semicircular cut-out to define a greater diameter. The assembly when in its loading position will accept a pipe joint of greater outside diameter than the inner diameter of the tightened clamp; and wherein tightening of the clamp initially deforms the pipe joint into an ovaled configuration and subsequently returns it to a circular configuration and impresses a bead thereabout for 360.degree..
Abstract: The present invention relates to a pump impeller for moving a fluid, comprising a hub on which at least one blade is fixed, wherein a support connects each blade to the hub and extends radially, winding helically with respect to the axis of said hub, while each blade extends in a direction substantially perpendicular to the radial direction of each support. One application of the present invention is the production of a pump impeller with high speed of rotation and high yield.
Abstract: A revolving anode for an X-ray tube comprising a hollow rotating shell including a support composed of molybdenum or molybdenum-based alloy and a thin layer of tungsten, the shell being filled with liquid metal or alloy such as sodium. The zone of impact of the electrons on the shell essentially comprises the layer of tungsten or tungsten alloy in direct contact with the liquid metal.
Abstract: A process for increasing the proportion of a gas in a gaseous mixture comprising such gas and at least two other constituents. The gaseous mixture in a substantially unpressurized condition is drawn successively through two beds of absorbent which adsorbs the two other constituents respectively by the action of a reduced pressure applied to an outlet of the second adsorbent bed in the series. The beds are then regenerated prior to a further admission of gaseous mixture thereto.
Abstract: A valve for use in an apparatus for supplying molten metal by means of a siphon to a furnace. A valve formed by a tube provided with two flanges is placed at the upper part of the siphon, this tube extending by a certain length below the level of the flanges, so as to form an annular space with each of the branches of the siphon in which the gas is trapped during decanting, which prevents the gaskets from being in contact with the molten metal.

Abstract: A process for increasing the proportion of a gas in a gaseous mixture of which it is a component. The gaseous mixture is allowed to be drawn through an adsorbent bed in a substantially unpressurized condition by the action of a reduced pressure applied to an outlet of the bed. The bed is then regenerated prior to a further admission of the gaseous mixture thereto.
Abstract: In archery bow sights having spaced apart front and rear sighting elements provided with rigid attachment to the bow and extending either forwardly or rearwardly from the bow riser section rapid, easily-made fine adjustments about the vertical and lateral axes of the bow, and basic rough general technique adjustments about the vertical, lateral (two adjustments of differing sensitivity provided) and longitudinal axes are provided, in addition to a multiple-sighting line hunting sight having the same structure for the basic rough and fine adjustments.
Abstract: A process for treating aqueous waste material having a biochemical oxygen demand, which process comprises passing the aqueous waste material along an elongate treatment tank or other elongate container for containing a volume of such material, having a transverse support structure or structures extending along the length of the tank or container and supporting aerobic micro-organisms, and dissolving an oxygenating gas in aqueous waste material at a plurality of positions spaced along the tank.
Abstract: A method is disclosed for the therapy and control of subclinical and clinical mastitis by the oral or parenteral administration of a composition having as active constituents iodine, potassium iodide and an aqueous solution of acetic acid made from the alcoholic and subsequent acetous fermentations of the juice of apples, in an aqueous carrier.
Abstract: In a method of arc welding under water or at superatmospheric pressure (or both) the weld is made in a chamber containing a gaseous atmosphere. The weld metal is deposited from flux-cored welding wire whose core contains strong deoxidant(s) such as aluminium, magnesium, titanium, zirconium, lithium and calcium. A shielding gas containing a selected proportion of oxygen or oxygen-containing gas but consisting mainly of an inert gas such as argon or helium is employed to surround the arc. The shielding gas is constituted by the atmosphere in the chamber.
Abstract: A new electrolyzer for the industrial production of fluorine gas which uses bipolar and monopolar electrodes within a tank containing an electrolyte of an anhydrous mixture of mineral fluorides and hydrogen fluoride. A compact construction is achieved which requires only two current connections.
