  • Patent number: 6833478
Abstract: A method is provided for enhancing the solubility of an ionizable compound in a lipophilic medium by admixing the compound with an effective solubility-enhancing amount of an N,N-dinitramide salt. The ionizable compound, upon ionization, gives rise to a biologically active cationic species that ionically associates with the N,N-dinitramide anion N(NO2)2− following admixture with the N,N-dinitramide salt. The biologically active cationic species may be a pharmacologically active cation, in which case the method is useful for enhancing the penetration of the blood-brain barrier by the pharmacologically active cation. In other embodiments, the ionizable compounds are medical imaging or diagnostic agents, or agricultural agents such as pesticides. Salts of biologically active cations and N,N-dinitramide ion are also provided as novel compositions of matter.

  • Patent number: 6469016
Abstract: Methods and formulations for treating female sexual dysfunction are provided. A pharmaceutical composition formulated so as to contain a selected vasoactive agent is administered to the vagina, vulvar area or urethra of the individual undergoing treatment. Suitable vasoactive agents are vasodilators, including naturally occurring prostaglandins, synthetic prostaglandin derivatives, endothelial-derived relaxation factors, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide agonists, smooth muscle relaxants, leukotriene inhibitors, and others. The formulations are also useful for preventing the occurrence of yeast infections, improving vaginal muscle tone and tissue health, enhancing vaginal lubrication, and minimizing excess collagen deposition. A clitoral drug delivery device is also provided.

  • Patent number: 6372881
Abstract: The invention provides novel conjugated polymers comprised of arylamine-substituted poly(arylene vinylenes). The polymers have the general structure (I) wherein: Ar is arylene, heteroarylene, substituted arylene or substituted heteroarylene containing one to three aromatic rings; R1 is an arylamine substituent having the formula —Ar1—N(R4R5) wherein Ar1 is as defined for Ar and R4 and R5 are independently hydrocarbyl, substituted hydrocarbyl, heteroatom-containing hydrocarbyl, or substituted heteroatom-containing hydrocarbyl, or together form a cyclic group; and R2 and R3 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrido, halo and cyano, or may be as defined for R4 and R5, or may together form a triple bond. Monomeric precursors and methods of synthesizing the precursors are also provided, as are electroluminescence and other devices containing a polymer of the invention.

  • Patent number: 6355321
Abstract: A tube for fuel transportation according to the present invention includes an innermost layer comprising one selected from the group consisting of fluorine type resins and polyamide type resins, a middle layer comprising a polyalkylene naphthalate resin, an outer layer comprising a thermoplastic resin or a thermoplastic elastomer, and an adhesive layer formed between the innermost layer and the middle layer. Polybutylene naphthalate may be used as the polyalkylene naphthalate resin. The tube for fuel transportation according to the present invention has excellent barrier action against fuels and is highly kink-proof.

  • Patent number: 5981518
Abstract: Disclosed are pharmaceutical compositions that comprise gallium complexes of 3-hydroxy-4-pyrones. These compositions provide enhanced gallium bioavailability particularly when orally administered as compared to the gallium bioavailability achieved by use of pharmaceutical compositions containing gallium salts. Compositions included in this invention are useful in providing gallium to humans and other mammals for a wide variety of medical and veterinary applications, including the treatment, prevention, or diagnosis of hypercalcemia, certain cancers, certain disorders of calcium homeostasis, and certain bone diseases including osteoporosis, osteopenia, and Paget's disease.
