  • Patent number: 5571476
Abstract: A process, system and pressure chamber for the automated sterilization of articles, particularly medical or dental instruments is disclosed, which is simple to use and economically efficient by comparison with conventional autoclaves and steam sterilizing system. Steam is generated by the pulsed injection of a controlled quantity of water into a heated boiler whenever it runs dry. The boiler is coupled in a closed-loop system to a relatively small pressure chamber in the form of a cassette that is readily inserted and removed from a holder comprising means for connecting the chamber to a steam inlet conduit and a venting conduit, the latter being closed off during pressurization of the chamber. By automated monitoring of the boiler and chamber temperatures, conditions in the chamber are measured and the boiler and valves in the system controlled to effect a sterilization cycle.

  • Patent number: 5562715
Abstract: A pacemaker may be implanted with equal facility on either side of a patient's chest without causing torque in the lead wires and avoiding unwanted local muscle stimulation. In one embodiment, the casing of the pacemaker is provided on opposite sides with a removable tab that covers an indifferent electrode so that when the device is implanted the appropriate tab may be removed to expose the electrode facing the patient's chest cavity. In a second embodiment, a portion along the edge of the pacemaker is left exposed to serve as the indifferent electrode, again allowing the device to be implanted with equal facility on either side of the chest without torque in the lead wires. Furthermore, since the edge of the device is not facing toward the patient's pectoral muscles, the device avoids unwanted pectoral twitching.

  • Patent number: 5555999
Abstract: An above-ground secondary containment unit for storage tanks is comprised of a rigid base and upwardly extending side and end walls. Side cover shields are mounted to the top of the side walls by way of hinges and are intended to contact a side surface of the storage tank thus minimizing or preventing the entry of precipitation or debris into the unit while the tank is in place. End cover shields are mounted to the top of the end walls using a nut and bolt arrangement and slots in the shield allowing for lateral adjustment of the shields with respect to an end surface of tanks of varying sizes and configurations. These shields similarly minimize or prevent the entry of precipitation and debris into the unit. The walls of the unit are tapered so that one unit may be nested within another similarly shaped unit for convenient storage and to permit shipment of multiple units at the same time.

  • Patent number: 5556052
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the preparation of a wound roll of a web of material is provided. The apparatus utilizes a surface windup device for automatically introducing a core onto a primary lay-on roll, and automatically cuts the web so that it can be attached around a new core. A primary lay-on roll feeds the web of material onto the rotating core. The core is driven by a secondary lay-on roll. The differential in speed between the primary and secondary lay-on rolls controls the tension of the web as it is wound. This invention also incorporates a retractable cutting roll and knife assembly that moves into position to cut the web of material, assists in transferring the web of material to a new core, and then retracts to a position that does not hinder winding the new roll of wound material. The winder is also equipped with an apparatus that ejects the wound roll from the hold-down clamps as a new roll is automatically started.

  • Patent number: 5553758
Abstract: A glue gun includes a nozzle body and a replaceable nozzle cap. The body is mounted in a melt casting of the glue gun such that it is rotationally adjustable. Thus, a rotationally asymmetric nozzle cap is more easily used because the nozzle body can be rotated to correct misalignment of the cap due to differences in the orientation of threads holding the cap to the body.A preferred nozzle includes a plurality of openings that allows the application of several small beads. These beads can be pressed into a thin layer if delay tack adhesive is used.
