    Abstract: A recording method is provided that can protect information recorded on a recording medium in a designated recording format. In response to a request for recording in a designated recording format among a plurality of recording formats applicable to the recording medium, restriction information for restricting recording in one or more recording formats other than the designated recording format among the plurality of recording formats is recorded in a predetermined area on the recording medium. Even if there is a request for data recording in a recording format in which recording is restricted, the request for data recording is dismissed by this method. Thus, data already recorded in the designated recording format can be prevented from being overwritten by other data.

    Abstract: A system and methods optimize the operation of sensing circuitry. In one embodiment, the output of a sensing circuit is stored in a register and processed through logic gates to determine whether the sensing output contains a predetermined string of logic ones or zeroes. If a string of ones is detected, the logic gates activate a counter to increase the operating clock frequency for the sensing circuit. If a string of zeroes is detected, the logic gates activate the counter to decrease the frequency.

Rough values corresponding to a transducer (41) signals provided at predetermined angular positions of the crankshaft are stored and are processed also to compensate alterations caused both by contact between the sides of the Vee-shaped reference device and the surface of the crankpin to be checked, and by variations of the angular arrangement of the Vee-shaped reference device in the course of orbital rotations of the pin.

    Abstract: Laser wavelength stabilization is achieved by locating a low selectivity reference filter in a reference path of a laser beam. The low selectivity reference filter, with a periodicity greater than the control filter, is used together with a lookup table for the reference filter to resolve the uncertainty associated with the multivalued control filter. After the wavelength uncertainty for the control filter is resolved, the laser beam is stabilized based on the response of the control filter, as if the reference filter was not present.

    Abstract: A method of increasing the monomolecular recombination and the immunity to noise of a continuously tunable laser is disclosed. A concentration of recombination centers in the range of about 1×1016 cm?3 to about 1×1018 cm?3 in the tuning region of the laser device is achieved by doping the waveguide layer with impurity atoms, by irradiating the waveguide layer with high energy particles or by varying the growth conditions of the waveguide layer to introduce native point defects due to lattice mismatch. This way, the monomolecular recombination is increased and the radiative recombination over low current ranges is reduced. By increasing the monomolecular recombination, the immunity to noise is improved but the tuning efficiency is reduced. Nevertheless, only a minimal effect on the tuning efficiency is noted over high current ranges and, therefore, the overall tuning range is only insignificantly changed.

    Abstract: The present claimed invention improves on the conventional comb and multiple router approach by making multiple use of a single router by using interleaved groups of wavelengths that enter through different entrance ports and exit through different groups of exit ports of the same router. This permits better separation (lower crosstalk) between adjacent channels, greatly reduced temperature sensitivity, small physical size and lower cost. With these improvements, a large number of wavelength add/drop sites may be cascaded in WAD/WDM systems.
