  • Patent number: 6157760
Abstract: A two-way optical communication module includes a main waveguide which is optically coupled to an optical fiber and directs light incident from the optical fiber to a light-receiving element and a sub waveguide which is optically coupled to the side of the main waveguide and directs light emitted from a light-emitting element to the optical fiber so as to carry out an efficient two-way optical communication by using one optical fiber without the necessity for an optical branch device. With this arrangement, it is possible to provide an inexpensive and small-sized two-way optical communication module which readily enables an integration with other elements so as to exhibit suitability for a small-scale network, and to provide a two-way optical communication link which uses the two-way optical communication module.

  • Patent number: 6156071
Abstract: A tubular fabric is provided for forming the shaft of a prosthesis having a predetermined length and one open end, the other end of the shaft being closed for holding a coupling member except for an aperture corresponding to a portion of said coupling member which is inserted therethrough to extend outwardly. The tubular base material is selected to be longer than the length of the shaft of the prosthesis to be formed. By means of a ring the tube is annularly held together from the outside at a predetermined length so as to form a first section starting from the opening. The remaining second section is then folded back over the annular hole onto the first section. To form the shaft of the prosthesis the material is impregnated with a thermoplastic resin.

  • Patent number: 6150178
Abstract: A specimen collecting and testing device has a housing containing a test membrane. An elongated handle having a foam member is slidably received in the housing. Once the foam member obtains a specimen, the housing is moved with respect to the handle and the foam member is moved inside the housing and slid past the test membrane. In so doing, specimen is delivered to the test membrane. The test membrane may then be observed for optical changes in the case of an instant-type test, or removed for further processing. The device is particularly useful for collecting samples of urine or oral fluid for use in drug testing, pregnancy testing and the like; for testing of specimen for any of a variety of analytes such as HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, etc.; and, for collecting samples of DNA for PCR testing.

  • Patent number: 6150038
Abstract: A reproducing layer, an intermediate layer, and a recording layer are successively stacked. The reproducing layer is made of a perpendicularly magnetized film whose domain wall coercivity is relatively smaller and whose domain wall mobility is relatively larger as compared with the recording layer around a reproducing temperature. When the reproducing layer, the intermediate layer, and the recording layer have Curie temperatures of Tc1, Tc2, and Tc3, Tc1, Tc2, and Tc3 satisfy a relationship of Tc2<Tc1<Tc3. Upon reproducing information, the reproducing layer is partially heated to more than the Curie temperature by irradiating with a light beam. This arrangement makes it possible to expand and reproduce a domain without causing a repetition of reproduction and to reproduce a signal having a period which is not more than an optical diffraction limit without reducing an amplitude of the reproduced signal, thereby dramatically improving a recording density.

  • Patent number: 6151363
Abstract: A method of generating motion vectors from a video signal, for use in motion compensation, is applicable to interlaced video signals. In the method alternate video fields are shifted vertically so as to align the picture lines of interlaced fields, by moving the lines of one field up by half a picture line and the lines of the next field down by half a picture line. The fields of each resultant pair are compared to produce a set of motion vectors which can be used to motion compensate the video signal. The accuracy may be improved using temporal filters operative on correlation surfaces derived over tow or more field intervals.

  • Patent number: 6147845
Abstract: A system interconnection device connected between two systems, such as a commercial bus line carrying power from a commercial power line and a private bus line carrying power from a private power generator, is able to connect and disconnect the two systems, and, in the event of a fault, has a current-limiting effect, thus preventing instantaneous voltage drop of the respective bus lines. In the system interconnection device, unit parallel circuits made up of diodes and DC reactors are serially connected so that the diodes thereof have opposite directions. With this structure, in realizing operations equivalent to those of a conventional system interconnection device having a DC reactor between DC terminals of a single-phase rectifying bridge circuit, the number of diodes, which are rectifying elements, can be halved.

  • Patent number: 6143436
Abstract: A magnetic recording medium having a recording layer made up of a ferrimagnetic material whose compensation temperature is included within room temperatures and an information recording-reproduction method using the magnetic recording medium. During recording, while a light beam is projected on the recording layer so as to raise the temperature of a recording portion, information is recorded by applying a signal magnetic field from a magnetic head. During reproduction, while a light beam is projected on a reproducing portion of the recording layer so as to raise the temperature thereof, information is reproduced by detecting leakage flux from the reproducing portion by the magnetic head. Thus, during reproduction, no magnetic flux is generated from other portions of the recording layer not irradiated by the light beam. With the arrangement, crosstalk due to leakage flux from adjoining tracks not irradiated by the optical beam can be eliminated.
