  • Patent number: 8251959
Abstract: A delivery device and a method for administering a fluid from a fluid reservoir, wherein an unintended free flow of the fluid from the reservoir to a recipient is reliably prevented, are disclosed. The delivery device has a tank for the fluid; a fluid delivery device which delivers the fluid from the tank; a valve body providing an input hole and an output hole; and an infusion set in order to guide the fluid from the tank to a distal end of the delivery device. The delivery device further provides a shutter assembly which is or can be mounted to the valve body and prevents the fluid from flowing inside the infusion set when the fluid exhibits a pressure which is lower than a predefined pressure.

  • Patent number: 8254670
Abstract: A method of object classification based upon fusion of a remote sensing system and a natural imaging system is provided. The method includes detecting an object using the remote sensing system. An angle of view of a video camera of the natural imaging system is varied. An image including the object is generated using the natural imaging system. The natural imaging system may zoom in on the object. The image represented in either pixel or transformed space is compared to a plurality of templates via a competition based neural network learning algorithm. Each template has an associated label determined statistically. The template with a closest match to the image is determined. The image may be assigned the label associated with the relative location of the object, the relative speed of the object, and the label of the template determined statistically to be the closest match to the image.

  • Patent number: 8248599
Abstract: Special polarization states are generated that have unique focusing properties that may be used to create extremely strong longitudinal fields. Combined with surface plasmon excitation, these polarization states can be used in apertureless near-field scanning optical microscopy systems. A radially polarized beam is directed into a plasmon-generating optical fiber comprising a metal coated, tapered, apertureless tip. The apertureless tip excites surface plasmon waves and direct the surface plasmon waves to the tip when a radially polarized beam propagates along the plasmon-generating optical fiber. An objective lens collects the near field optical signals from a sample positioned adjacent to the apertureless. Potential spatial resolution of the apertureless NSOM could reach beyond 10 nm. Such strong field enhancement allows the development of a reliable nano-Raman system that can measure mechanical as well as chemical compositions of samples with resolution beyond 10 nm.

  • Patent number: 8236456
Abstract: A flow shifting fuel cell with water separator. The water separator is used to control the amount of moisture that passes through the anode flowpath of one or more fuel cells in one or more fuel cell stacks. The water separator is made up of a housing to direct the flow of a moisture-bearing fluid as well as act as a collection and container for separated moisture. Fluid that is cyclically passing through the fuel cell stack as part of its flow shifting mode of operation oscillates back and forth across a separation chamber formed within the water separator, thereby allowing bidirectional control of the moisture content within the fluid. A drain is formed in the separation chamber to allow removal of condensed water.
