  • Patent number: 7258253
Abstract: Devices, systems, and methods for the precise dispensation of small volumes of liquids are presented. A fluid microdispenser comprises a liquid-filled tube, an actuator coupled to the tube, and a tip at one end of the tube. When the actuator applies an actuation pressure, a precise volume of liquid is ejected from the orifice of the tip. The orifice is manufactured to control the volume of liquid ejected by each actuation and, therefore, may have a diameter smaller than that of the liquid-filled tube. The invention comprises systems, methods, and devices so that the inner diameter of the liquid-filled tube is decreased (tapered) to that of the orifice so as to maximize transmission to the orifice of the pressure generated by the actuation stimulus. This enables the volume of liquid ejected by each stimulus to be reproducibly controlled by the amplitude of the actuation stimulus.

  • Patent number: 7153657
Abstract: Methods are provided for detecting a cell proliferative disorder associated with TSLC1 by contacting a proliferating cell of a subject suspected of having the disorder with a reagent that detects TSLC1 and detecting the level of TSLC1 in the proliferating cell. TSLC1 is a single gene whose expression is reduced or absent in A549 and some other NSCLC, hepatocellular carcinoma and pancreatic cancer cell lines. It has further been discovered that TSLC1 expression or suppression is perfectly correlated with promoter methylation state. Restoration of TSLC1 expression to normal or higher levels is sufficient by itself to suppress tumor formation. The invention further provides methods of treating such disorders by contacting cells of a patient suffering from the disorder with a therapeutically effective amount of a reagent that modulates TSLC1 level in the proliferating cells.

  • Patent number: 7153653
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for detecting a cellular proliferative disorder in a subject. The method includes contacting a nucleic acid-containing specimen from the subject with an agent that provides a determination of the methylation state of at least one gene or associated regulatory region of the gene and identifying aberrant methylation of regions of the gene or regulatory region, wherein aberrant methylation is identified as being different when compared to the same regions of the gene or associated regulatory region in a subject not having said cellular proliferative, thereby detecting a cellular proliferative disorder in the subject.

  • Patent number: 7149110
Abstract: A memory comprises a plurality of digital multilevel memory cells. A window of valid data voltages for accessing the said plurality of digital multilevel memory cells is detected. The window may be detected by incrementing a first programming voltage to program data in the plurality of memory cells and verifying whether the data in at least one of said plurality of memory cells is properly programmed. The incrementing and verifying may be repeated until data is verified to be properly programmed in one of said plurality of memory cells. The data in each memory cell of said plurality of memory cells is verified. The verification may be by incrementing a second programming voltage, and verifying whether data in each memory cell is properly programmed within a margin. The incrementing and verifying is repeated for each memory cell outside of the margin.

  • Patent number: 7148589
Abstract: In a computer system constituted by a portable computer and a deskstation used to expand the function of the portable computer, the portable computer has a communication connector used for communication with the deskstation, in addition to a connector for connecting a system bus in the portable computer to the deskstation. Similarly, the deskstation also has a communication connector. When the portable computer is set at a predetermined position of the deskstation, these connectors are connected to each other before the system bus is connected to an expansion device of the deskstation. By using the communication connectors to perform communication between the portable computer and the deskstation, disconnection between the system bus and an expansion connector or forced suspend processing of the portable computer is executed before the portable computer in a power ON state is mounted in the deskstation. In addition, a lock mechanism is provided to lock the portable computer with the deskstation.

  • Patent number: 7143909
Abstract: A dispenser is provided for delivering a controlled quantity of a granular material. The dispenser includes a container assembly, a diffuser and a metering cup. The container includes a reservoir which supports a disposable cartridge of granular material. The cartridge is supported in the reservoir so as to define a passageway therebetween. A nozzle is defined for the outflow of material from the cartridge. The diffuser is disposed on one end of the container and includes a plurality of apertures. The metering cup is disposed on the opposite end of the container and has an open end adapted to receive granular material. Adjustment of the axial spacing between the nozzle and metering cup varies the quantity of granular material collected in the cup. The granular material is dispensed by inverting the container to a second orientation, such that material flows out of the metering cup, through the passageway and out of the diffuser.

  • Patent number: 7146377
Abstract: According to one embodiment, a metadata management system (MDS) may include partitioned migratable metadata. Metadata may be stored in multiple metadata partitions (102-0 to 102-11). Each metadata partition may be assigned to a particular system resource (104-0 to 104-5). According to predetermined policies, such as metadata aging, metadata stored in one metadata partition may be migrated to a different metadata partition. A forwarding object can be placed in the old metadata partition to indicate the new location of the migrated metadata. Metadata partitions (102-0 to 102-11) may be reassigned to different resources, split and/or merged allowing a high degree of scalability, as well as flexibility in meeting storage system needs.

  • Patent number: 7138621
Abstract: A optical fiber sensor for measuring temperature and/or pressure employs temporally created long period gratings. The gratings may be produced by a periodic change in the refractive index of the fiber along the fiber longitudinal axis caused by periodically spaced compressive and/or expansive forces or by spaced-apart unbalanced forces that cause periodic fiber micro-bending. Pressure and temperature are determined by measuring changes in both the wavelength at which light is coupled from a mode guided by a core to a different mode and an amount of such coupling. The gratings are created intrinsically and extrinsically. Single and multiple core fibers are used.
