  • Patent number: 5462109
Abstract: The strip is cast on a chilled casting surface of a rotating drum from a pool of the molten metal contained in a tundish having a graphite lip insert seated therein cooperating with, the casting surface adjacent to the tundish to form and contain the pool of the molten metal. The tundish preferably contains a feed chamber, a return chamber, and a diverting chamber, the feed chamber and the diverting chamber effectively removing turbulence from the molten feed and the return chamber having a vertically adjustable weir dividing the return chamber from the diverting chamber for controlling the surface level of the pool of molten metal in the diverting chamber and the lip insert and for diverting a flow of molten metal to the return chamber. A preferred lead alloy is a low antimony-lead alloy which is cast into strip and is subjected to a heat treatment to permit expansion and shaping in subsequent production of expanded mesh battery grids.

  • Patent number: 5449563
Abstract: Reinforcing steel bar (rebar) in reinforced concrete is inhibited from corrosion by attaching a zinc wire, such as by welding, soldering or co-extrusion, along the length of the rebar. Zinc wire attached to the rebar provides galvanic protection to the steel to prevent iron corrosion and subsequent deterioration of the reinforced concrete.

  • Patent number: 5356590
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a moulded part using a first and second mould, wherein the first mould has a complementary design of the outer surface of the moulded part and the second mould has a complementary design of the inner surface of the moulded part and a boss cavity for forming an outer wall of a thin-walled boss to be moulded onto the inner face of the moulded part. The steps include seating a plug substantially co-planar with the complementary inner surface design and extending the plug into the boss cavity presenting an inner wall of the boss, wherein the thickness between the inner and outer wall of the boss is less than 60% of the thickness of the moulded part where the boss is moulded thereto. Closing the first and second mould forming a mould cavity. Injecting molten material into the mould cavity. Waiting a predetermined amount of time to allow the molten material to harden. Opening the first and second moulds. Extending the plug from the boss cavity.

  • Patent number: 5344479
Abstract: A process is disclosed for separating and recovering nickel and copper values from a nickel-copper matte which may contain iron and arsenic. Finely divided nickel-copper matte is leached in aqueous sulphuric acid solution under oxidizing conditions at atmospheric pressure and at a minimum temperature of about 80.degree. C. to selectively leach nickel from the matte to produce a nickel sulphate solution having a final pH in the range of about 4.0 to 6.5, preferably about 6.5, and to produce a copper-rich sulphide residue. The copper-rich sulphide residue is separated from the nickel sulphate solution and leached in a closed reaction vessel at a minimum temperature of about 120.degree. C. under a non-oxidizing atmosphere in a sulphuric acid solution containing an effective amount of copper and sulphuric acid to provide a terminal concentration of at least about 2 g/L Cu.sup.

  • Patent number: 5267991
Abstract: A reusable diaper pad is disclosed for the absorption, dispersion and retention of a liquid. The pad comprises an interior layer of hydrophobic material for receiving the liquid, a median layer consisting of non-woven webs of carded and cross-laid viscose rayon fibres having a cross-section of substantially rigid multilimbed configuration with the webs being stitchbonded to form a cohesive layer for dispersing and absorbing the liquid and an outer layer of a substantially waterproof polyurethane film. The interior layer, median layer and outer layer are joined to form a pad of unitary construction and capable of being washed for reuse.
