    Abstract: A method for determining the nucleotide sequence of a chromosome. The chromosome is hydrolyzed to form a mixture of oligonucleotides having unknown nucleotide sequences. The mixture is exposed to a library of oligonucleotide probe pairs having known sequences. The probe pairs are located so that they hybridize to outer opposed sections of the chromosomal oligonucleotides. The use of oligonucleotide probe pairs provides for sequencing of relatively long unknown DNA sequences using relatively short oligonucleotide probes.

    Abstract: A releasable disc adaptor for conforming the central hub of an information storage disc to a standardized magneto-optical disc drive spindle. The adaptor includes a hub fastener fixedly mounted to the hub receiving member. The hub fastener is utilized to removably secure the hub receiving member to a disc drive spindle. The medium fastener is used to removably secure the central hub of an information storage disc to the hub receiving member and prevent slippage therebetween so that the disc hub is thereby conformed to properly seat on the disc drive spindle while thereafter allowing the disc to be fully disengaged from the adaptor members for proper seating on an alternate disc drive spindle.

    Abstract: A method of asynchronously accessing a random access memory having a plurality of rows and columns, where each row has a wordline connected to read and write row decoders and each column is connected to bitlines. A row address is assigned to a first and second row, i.e. a pair of rows. A read address is provided to the read row decoder and a write address is provided to the write row decoder. The read and write addresses are decoded by the read and write row decoders, respectively, and one of the first or second rows is selected for reading. Asynchronous with selecting one of the first or second rows for reading, one of the first or second rows is selected for writing. Data is then read from the row selected for reading and asynchronously data is written into the row selected for writing. Signals are provided which coordinate the reading and writing of data, where in the event reading or writing is being performed, another of the reading or writing is deferred until completion of the first reading or writing.

    Abstract: A video record medium, such as a record disc, for recording a composite video and audio signal suitable for stop-motion playback, with accompanying audio. Discrete segments of analog audio signal are digitized and compressed in time and recorded on alternate tracks on the disc, and corresponding frames of a video signal are recorded on the tracks located therebetween. During playback of the disc, a selected audio track is scanned initially and the digital audio data recovered therefrom is entered into a memory device, after which the track for recording the corresponding video frame is scanned in a repeated fashion, to produce a stop-motion display of the frame, while the stored audio data is extracted from the memory device and converted back to an analog format, for simultaneous playback at its original speed.

    Abstract: An technique is disclosed for focus control of a beam of radiant energy, wherein a detector of the beam has first and second outputs responsive to a position of the beam. A circuit is coupled to the outputs of the detector for producing an error signal representing a displacement of the focus from a predetermined position, wherein the error signal has a periodic characteristic relative to the displacement. A servo responsive to the error signal restores the displaced beam to the predetermined position. A local feedback loop is coupled to the outputs of the detector, and includes first and second periodic function generators, each responsive to the error signal. The second periodic function generator has an output that differs from an output of the first periodic function generator by a phase angle, preferably 90 degrees. A first multiplier multiplies the first output of the detector by the output of the first periodic function generator.

The stages are preferably connected to two non-overlapping clock phases (PH0, PH1) Adjacent stages are also connected via a validation line (IN.sub.-- VALID, OUT.sub.-- VALID) and an acceptance line (IN.sub.-- ACCEPT, OUT.sub.-- ACCEPT), and in some embodiments also via an extension bit line (IN.sub.-- EXTN, OUT.sub.-- EXTN). Input data is transferred from any stage to the following device on every complete period of both clock signals only if both the validation and acceptance signals in the respective latch are in an affirmative state, whereby data is transferred between stages regardless of the state of the validation and acceptance signals in other stages. A two-wire interface is thus formed between the stages.

    Abstract: An MPEG decoder operates in 2.5 frame store mode, and has an efficient memory management which allows a B picture to be stored and displayed while simultaneously making use of a portion of the frame store memory. The video frame is treated as a grid, having rows of 8.times.8 pixel blocks. The pixel blocks are manipulated in three FIFOs which are cross-connected in a closed loop. Two processes operate on the memory so arranged: (1) a video reconstruction process which writes data into the memory, and (2) a display process, which accesses the memory and writes the video frame into another, external memory in a rastered format. One of the three cross-coupled FIFOs is designated for write-back, and the other two for reading 2:1 interlaced raster data. The two FIFOs utilized for the raster operation are allocated to the alternate lines of the picture.

Component members are provided for mitigating the effects of compressive forces, vibration isolation, and thermal expansion, and may include compression ribs mounted on a housing for absorbing compressive forces. The housing is preferably adapted to fit on the end of a pole piece assembly. A crash stop may also be provided as a shock absorbing bumper and isolator to prevent a moving carriage from crashing into a solid surface. The compressive ribs and the crash stop are made of a material that exhibits minimum creep, such as a silicon rubber, polyurethane, or injection molded plastic.

One such method includes the changing of the rotational rate of a storage medium by applying a force to the storage medium to change the rotational rate from an initial rotational rate toward a first upper limit. The first upper limit is between the initial rotational rate and a desired rotational rate. A first signal is generated when the rotational rate exceeds the first upper limit. A second signal is generated when the rotational rate exceeds a lower acceptable limit of the desired rotational rate. The application of force is then terminated. To terminate the application of force, a second upper limit may be set at an upper acceptable limit of the desired rotational rate, a lower limit may be set at the lower acceptable limit of the desired rotational rate, and the application of force may be terminated when the rotational rate is greater than the lower limit.

    Abstract: An improved method for operating an optical disc system having a focusing mechanism, a tracking mechanism, and a lens. The method includes the steps of impinging light upon a disc to be read, moving the lens to a first position by driving an actuator, monitoring a Quad Sum signal, moving the lens away from the first position toward the disc being read while looking for a maximum of the Quad sum signal, moving the lens away from the disc, determining, during the monitoring, when Quad Sum signal is above one-half the maximum, processing a focus error signal in a digital processing circuit having a transfer function providing a frequency notch at a mechanical resonance of the actuator. The digital processing circuit produces zero crossings corresponding to focus conditions method further includes searching for a first of the zero crossings after the Quad sum signal exceeds the one-half of the maximum, and closing focus when the first zero crossing is detected.
