A trigger check valve is located between the master piston and exhaust valve slave piston so that the initial motion of the master piston delivers energy to the plenum. At a predetermined point in the travel of the master piston, the trigger check valve is opened by the master piston to permit the delivery of the energy stored in the plenum to the slave piston. Additional pumping capability is provided by a second master piston while a control check valve communicating with the second master piston limits the intake of hydraulic fluid into the system after working pressures have been attained to that hydraulic fluid which may leak from the system.

    Abstract: Copper rod has an improved surface smoothness and substantially no surface oxides, which rod is suitable for drawing or rolling into wire. The copper rod is produced by a process which comprises the steps of forming a bath of molten pure copper, casting the molten copper into a cast bar, conditioning the bar for hot-rolling, hot-rolling the bar to form a hot-rolled rod, cooling the hot-rolled rod and chemically shaving and pickling the hot-rolled rod. The chemical shaving and pickling step is performed with a solution containing controlled concentrations of sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide. Both the solution and the rod are maintained at elevated temperatures and the duration of the reaction is controlled. The interrelated process variables are regulated so that substantially all of the surface oxides and a desired amount of copper are removed from the surface of the hot-rolled rod.

    Abstract: A process for the removal of acidic gases from carrier gases employing a finely divided alkaline sorbent material is disclosed. The process includes, optionally, the step of conditioning the carrier gas to lower its temperature. The process comprises introducing a stream containing the alkaline sorbent material and mixing the alkaline sorbent material and the carrier gas, introducing a stream of vapor and liquid droplets and mixing the stream of vapor and liquid droplets with the stream of carrier gas containing the alkaline sorbent material. Thereafter a portion of the vapor is condensed and the alkaline sorbent material reacted with the acid gases to form products of reaction. Finally, the products of reaction and the remaining alkaline sorbent material are separated from the carrier gas stream. Preferably, the alkaline sorbent material is calcium based, e.g., calcium hydroxide or calcium carbonate and the vapor and liquid droplets comprise low pressure steam and water, respectively.

    Abstract: The invention is applicable to an internal combustion engine of the four-stroke cycle type equipped with a compression release engine retarder capable of producing one compression release event and one bleeder retarding event in each cylinder during every two revolutions of the engine crankshaft. This is accomplished by a novel articulated rocker arm assembly including a rocker member and a latch member in which the rocker member, engaged by the exhaust pushtube, is disengaged from the latch member, which acts against the crosshead, after a compression release event has occurred, but remains engaged if a compression release event does not occur. When the latch member is disengaged from the rocker member, the exhaust valves are held in a partially open position to produce a bleeder retarding event. A trigger valve acutated by the exhaust pushtube and rocker member vents the reatarder high pressure hydraulic system to initiate the bleeder retarding event.

The improvement comprises hydro-mechanical mechanisms incorporated principally into the slave piston and adjustable stop which assures a prompt closing of the engine exhaust valve following a compression release event and provides means to advance the opening of the exhaust valve to begin the compression release event. The mechanism is automatic in that the exhaust valve opening advance mechanism alters the valve train lash to a predetermined level whenever the engine retarder is operated and the exhaust valve closing mechanism acts in response to the decrease in engine cylinder pressure during the compression release event.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling the intake manifold air pressure during compression release engine retarding of a turbocharged internal combustion engine are disclosed. The apparatus comprises a solenoid actuated pressure responsive means communicating with the intake manifold and electrically connected to the control circuit for the compression release retarder. In one form of the invention, intake manifold air pressure is controlled so as not to exceed a predetermined maximum pressure during compression release retarding while in another form of the invention the intake manifold air pressure may be adjusted by the operator to any level up to a predetermined maximum level. By controlling the intake manifold air pressure the magnitude of the retarding horsepower developed by the engine and the loads imposed on certain of the engine components may be controlled.

    Abstract: An hydromechanical overhead is provided for a four-cycle internal combustion engine. The hydromechanical overhead includes a set of master cylinders and pistons adapted to be actuated by each of the engine exhaust and intake pushtubes, a set of slave cylinders and pistons adapted to actuate each exhaust and intake valve, a two-position three-way control valve associated with each slave cylinder, passageways interconnecting the several master and slave cylinders and control valves and electronic control means adapted to move the control valves between a first position wherein the engine operates in a four-cycle powering mode and a second position wherein the engine operates in a two-cycle retarding mode. A solenoid controlled lash adjustment mechanisn is provided for the exhaust and intake valves whereby the normal lash required for the powering mode of engine operation may automatically be increased to the substantially larger lash required for the two-cycle retarding mode of engine operation.
