Patent number: 4495598Abstract: The rotate function of this invention involves cyclic shifts of 1 to 4 byte data by an amount of 0, 1, 2, or 3 bytes either to the left or to the right. Only one CPU firmware clock cycle is required regardless of the shift amount. This shifting is done either on data which is transferred from computer memory or on data prior to its transfer into computer memory. Firmware-controlled hardware shifts the bytes in the data field in response to information provided concerning the location of the most significant byte in memory relative to the boundaries of the data word and the length of the data word. The firmware can also directly specify the amount of the shift.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1982Date of Patent: January 22, 1985Assignee: McDonnell Douglas CorporationInventors: Richard Vahlstrom, Dennis R. Keats, Peter T. Lee

Patent number: 4483498Abstract: A flight control surface coupling system which provides a two-element drive coupling between two control surface segments. The first element is a torsion bar that has adequate spring rate to suppress surface flutter yet soft enough to deflect and function as a low load compliance element between sets of drive actuators. The second element is a drive coupling that permits the two surface segments to move freely within its stops. The stops are spaced to allow easy determination of out-of-rig conditions and small enough to provide an effective drive to move one segment through the second segment with a single actuator. Structural fatigue loads are greatly reduced without sacrificing surface positionability.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 1982Date of Patent: November 20, 1984Assignee: McDonnell Douglas CorporationInventor: Wilfred E. Patent number: 4454496Abstract: A system for providing a Head-Up Display (HUD) on board an aircraft to assist a pilot in guiding the aircraft. The display is positioned in the pilot's normal line of sight. In one mode it utilizes a radio beam landing system such as an ILS (Instrument Landing System) to generate symbols that correspond to visual ground cues which, together with an aircraft symbol display, provide the pilot with cues for aligning the aircraft on the appropriate path for approach and landing. The system moves the aircraft symbol in accordance with motion changes of the aircraft. During a landing approach the pilot "flies" the aircraft symbol relative to the simulated and/or real ground cues. By making the HUD correspond with ground cues, the abrupt transition from instrumented to visual flight is eliminated. At altitudes below which available ILS is not acceptable, the system provides a smooth transition to a mode independent of ILS and then to a flare mode.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 1980Date of Patent: June 12, 1984Assignee: McDonald Douglas CorporationInventor: James R. Patent number: 4448106Abstract: A system for identifying a hard target from a distance. A delivery vehicle, such as a missile or bomb, is adapted to be dropped from the air. The delivery vehicle contains a plurality of hard target identifier or kinetic penetrator elements. Each of the elements has a nose portion of aerodynamic shape and a plurality of fins connected thereto. When ejected from the delivery vehicle, the elements will reach a substantial velocity, and hence, kinetic energy to penetrate partially into a hard target. A soft surrounding area, such as earth or water will absorb the elements. The elements may be passive for reflecting waves, such as acoustic waves or electromagnetic energy. Alternatively, they may be active elements capable of ejecting a dye, such as a fluorescent dye, or for transmitting acoustical or electromagnetic energy upon being activated.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 1981Date of Patent: May 15, 1984Assignee: McDonnell Douglas CorporationInventor: Richard D. Patent number: 4444249Abstract: A three-way heat pipe configured in a generally Y-shape having a condenser-evaporator or heat-sink end, an evaporator arm and a condenser arm. In addition to conventional internal pumping the heat pipe is mechanically pumped externally from the heat-sink end to the evaporator arm. Heat transfer can take place between any two of the three elements by thermostatically controlling the external pump. Heat or cold may be stored in a suitable medium surrounding the condenser-evaporator end of the pipe for later transfer through the condenser or evaporator ends used as heat exchangers without a secondary circulation system. Heat transfer may also take place directly between the evaporator and condenser arms without storage. In the preferred embodiment of the heat storage configuration, a valve is placed in the condenser arm to prevent unwanted heat transfer.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 1981Date of Patent: April 24, 1984Assignee: McDonnell Douglas CorporationInventor: Edwin C.
