  • Patent number: 4988602
Abstract: Liquid toners for developing electrophotographic images contain dispersed toner particles which are based on a polymer with multi-characteristics. These particles comprise a thermoplastic resinous core with a Tg below room temperature, which is chemically anchored to an amphipathic copolymer steric stabilizer containing covalently attached groups of a coordinating compound which in turn are capable of forming covalent links with organo-metallic charge directing compounds and a thermoplastic ester resin that functions as a charge enhancing component for the toner. The toner particles so formed have advantageous properties of high charge/mass, and good charge and dispersion stability.

  • Patent number: 4988541
Abstract: Process for making retroreflector sheet having protrusions which are retroreflective on selected side surfaces of the protrusions. Continuous web of polymeric base sheet having a front surface with a plurality, of protrusions, each protrusion having a top surface and at least one side surface, is provided. The web is conveyed through a nip in contact with a liquid film of bonding polymer at sufficient pressure to displace the film from the protrusion top surfaces and onto selected side surfaces, depending upon the relative speeds of the web and bonding polymer film. Retroreflective beads are applied to the liquid film which is then solidified (e.g., by temperature change) to hold the beads in place.

  • Patent number: 4988554
Abstract: A coated abrasive article comprising a backing bearing on one major surface thereof a layer of abrasive grains overcoated with a loading resistant coating and on the other major surface thereof a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive. The loading resistant coating comprises a lithium salt of a fatty acid. It may also contain additives selected from the group consisting of surfactants, wetting agents, binders, anti-foaming agents, fillers, plasticizers, and mixtures thereof. The use of a lithium salt of a fatty acid significantly reduces the amount of transfer between the loading resistant coating of a first coated abrasive article and the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer of a second coated abrasive article disposed within a package.

  • Patent number: 4987940
Abstract: A device for applying spaced layers generally transversely across an elongate web which defines a through path for the web including parallel inlet and outlet path portions spaced sideways from each other and a transverse path portion between adjacent terminal and beginning ends of the inlet and outlet path portions. The web is moved lengthwise at a predetermined speed in a first direction along the inlet and outlet path portions, the device periodically moves the portion of the web along the transverse path portion generally edgewise in a direction parallel to the first direction and at about the predetermined speed to essentially stop longitudinal movement of the portion of the web along the transverse path portion; and the device applies a layer of material such as tape generally transversely across the portion of the web along the transverse path portion as it moves tangentially by the periphery of a rotating applicator drum.
