Patent number: 4896667Abstract: An endotracheal tube bite block of simple design which can be secured to a standard endotracheal tube, the block and tube anchored reliably with an attachment strap so that bodily shifting of the tube within the trachea is deterred. Two embodiments of the instant bite block have an elongated hard core of generally C-shaped cross-section and a material not as hard as the core, the softer material being secured to a portion of the exterior of the hard core, and a portion of the hard core being exposed. The bite block can be secured to a standard endotracheal tube by taping the exposed portion of the hard core to the tube. Preferably, the bite block has two radial apertures through the softer material and the hard core to permit securing of the bite block and tube to a patient with a flexible strap. It may be possible to attach the bite block and tube with an attachment strap threaded through a transverse aperture in the softer material and hard core or otherwise attached to the bite block.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 1988Date of Patent: January 30, 1990Inventors: Linda M. Patent number: 4663385Abstract: There is disclosed a process of thickening an aqueous system comprising adding to the system aqueous dispersions of water-insoluble emulsion copolymers of (1) about 10-70% by weight of (meth)acrylic acid or itaconic acid, (2) about 0.5-25% by weight of an alkyl poly(oxyethylene) itaconate, and (3) at least 25% by weight, to a total of 100%, of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl (meth)acrylate, and, optionally, included in the total monomer mixture a small amount of (4) about 0.05-1% by weight of a polyethylenically unsaturated monomer. The copolymers, when neutralized and solubilized by addition of an alkali, are high efficiency thickeners for aqueous systems and have improved tolerance to ionic or electrolyte content. Typical systems that can be thickened are paint latices, cosmetic preparations, food preparations, ionic detergents, dye pastes for textiles, pharmaceuticals, and oil well drilling muds. Surfactants enhance the thickening properties afforded by the copolymers.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 1982Date of Patent: May 5, 1987Assignee: Rohm and HaasInventors: Ching-Jen Chang, Travis E. Patent number: 4391076Abstract: Generally rectangular wood shake covering elements laid up in overlapping courses are spaced apart transversely of their lengths by sawn wood shingle filler elements. Preferably the major portion of the overlapped portion of each course is formed by the tips of the sawn shingle filler elements, whereas the major portion of the exposed portion of each course is formed by the wood shake covering elements. One of such elements can be notched providing a transversely extending shoulder dividing such element into tip and butt portions of unequal width. In application, the shoulder tightly abuts the adjacent element. The covering and filler elements can be used to construct a roofing panel which includes a sawn shingle underlayer beneath each course and waterproof paper which underlies at least the major portion of the shingle underlayer but which is secured to the roofing panel by having one end portion interposed between the underlayer and the covering or filler element at one end of the panel.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 1981Date of Patent: July 5, 1983Inventor: Stewart Ferguson

Patent number: 4368039Abstract: An extraoral force-reaction device engageable with the wearer's head and/or neck, such as a headcap or a neckband, is connected to an intraoral force-applying device, such as molar bands, by force-producing means, such as springs. Snapback of the force-applying means is controlled in response to relative movement of the intraoral means and the extraoral force-reaction means away from each other beyond a predetermined maximum limit, or in response to stressing of the force-producing means beyond a predetermined maximum degree of force exerted by the force-producing means. Snapback control may be effected by latching of a limit latch to prevent or limit return movement of the force-reaction device and the force-applying device, or disconnectible means can be disconnected to interrupt the application to the intraoral means of force capable of moving such intraoral means.Type: GrantFiled: April 25, 1979Date of Patent: January 11, 1983Assignee: Northwest Orthodontics, Inc.Inventor: Maclay M.
