  • Patent number: 6204875
Abstract: A method and system for exposing a light sensitive material using device for forming a row of spots of light onto the light sensitive material located on a focal plane, device for modulating each of the spots according to imaging data so that at any point of time, the row of spots forms a data pattern according to the imaging data, device for generating relative motion between the imaging mechanism and the light sensitive material on the focal plane, the direction of motion substantially parallel to the direction of the row of spots on the light sensitive material; and data synchronizing device for shifting the imaging data into the modulating device at a rate determined by the speed of relative motion to maintain the image of any data pattern substantially stationary on the light sensitive material.

  • Patent number: 6185440
Abstract: This invention relates to a method and apparatus for transmitting a downlink signal from a communication station to one or more subscriber units to achieve a desired radiation level over a desired sector (e.g., everywhere), the communication station including an array of antenna elements and one or more signal processors programmed (in the case of programmable signal processors) to weight the downlink signal according to one of a sequence of complex valued weight vectors. The method includes sequentially repeating transmitting the downlink signal, each repetition with a different weight vector from the sequence until all weight vectors in the sequence have been transmitted with. The sequence is designed for achieving the desired radiation level during at least one of the repetitions. In this way, every user in the desired region is transmitted to in the time period.

  • Patent number: 6177906
Abstract: A method and apparatus is described for implementing adaptive smart antenna processing in a receiving communication station that includes an array of antennas and means for adaptive smart antenna processing, the method and apparatus including determining weight vectors for the adaptive smart antenna processing. Using the invention offers advantages when operating in a low SINR environment, for example, in a mobile environment in which the remote users are travelling at high speeds, hence the signals undergo fading. One aspect is hybrid weight adaptation that starts off with a method with good convergence properties, for example, one known to converge in a low SINR environment then switches to a method that converges rapidly, for example when started with relatively high quality initial conditions. To deal with high mobility, the weights determined from data at a particular burst are applied on that particular burst. Such weights may not be optimal for the subsequent bursts.

  • Patent number: 5971393
Abstract: The present invention relates to a device and a method for unloading a sheet medium from a vacuum drum which may be a vacuum drum of an imagesetter for example, or a vacuum drum of an input scanning machine. The unloading is facilitated by the stiffness of sheet medium. When the vacuum holding a sheet medium is released, the stiffness of the sheet medium causes the sheet to separate from the drum. A roll forces the sheet onto the drum and the motion of the drum forces the sheet medium onto a table which has been moved into proximity of the drum. The sheet travels onto a transport mechanism which eventually takes over the moving of the sheet medium without requiring synchronism between the drum rotational speed and the transport mechanism.

  • Patent number: 5926185
Abstract: A method for processing page description language commands improves the efficiency of the digital work flow in graphic arts. The method first translates the page description language commands into a structured object display list. The display list is then examined to identify the occurrence of specific predefined properties of graphical objects. The display list is modified to correct or eliminate the properties, and the corresponding page description language commands are modified accordingly. The specific predefined properties that are identified include spurious contours, double contours, redundant colors and inks, useless clips, tight continuous tone clips, blends, degenerate strokes, and strokes having unprintable thickness.

  • Patent number: 5889932
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for improving computer aided graphical design with a design rule checker. A preferred embodiment of the invention is a computer program which when loaded in a computer checks a graphical design for conformity to a set of graphical design rules such as printability rules, legal packaging rules, company style rules, and aesthetic rules. The program may be operated in an interactive mode to provide feedback while a design is being created, or in a batch mode after the design is completed. Specific rules can be customized and adapted for appropriate printing processes, company styles, legal rules, and aesthetics.

  • Patent number: 5872573
Abstract: A method and system for processing a set of graphical data representing a page to enhance the legibility of text in the page. The method and system select text to be enhanced from the set of graphical data, text in this context including any logos and other graphical objects selected for enhancement; create raw edging data which includes enhancing edges in an enhancing color for the text to be enhanced; form an edging clip mask which includes areas on the page where the raw edging data is to be visible; and clip the raw edging data with the edging clip mask. When the page includes CT images, the areas on the page where the raw edging data is to be visible include the union of the regions of the page that have CT images, excluding parts of the page not covered by CT images that are ghosted, have a stroke attribute, have a solid fill attribute, or have a vignetted fill attribute.

  • Patent number: 5836581
Abstract: The present invention relates to a device and a method for loading a sheet-like medium onto a drum without tension. The drum may be a vacuum drum of an imagesetter for example, or a vacuum drum of an input scanning machine. In order to load a sheet-like medium onto a drum without any tension, the sheet-like medium is taken over by take-over means before fixing it on the drum.

  • Patent number: 5819264
Abstract: A method of performing a navigated associative search on a set of heterogeneous databases is described, the method implemented on a general purpose computer. The method comprises converting each database of the set of databases into a schema-free structure called a hyperbase. The hyperbases corresponding to each database of the set of databases are combined into a single combined hyperbase, and that single hyperbase is normalized into a single normalized hyperbase. An associative search on the single hyperbase includes providing a set of input words and a set of locations. The method of the present invention determines an answer, which is that sub-hyperbase of the hyperbase to be searched which has minimum "cost" according to a criterion. The location representing the object of the query answer also is determined. Once an answer is determined, the answer is displayed to the user. New queries may be navigated starting at a location or locations chosen by the user.
