  • Patent number: 4198275
Abstract: A locomotive is provided to move a quench car and a gas transition car parallel to a battery of coke ovens adjacent a coke guide car. A pivotable hood is provided on the guide car for covering part of the charging opening of the quench car. The quench car has generally parallel, pivotal flaps which can operate independently to open a portion of the quench car charge opening beneath the hood as coke is pushed from the guide and through the hood into the car. The flaps on either side of the hood can be held closed to seal the charge opening and prevent escape of the dirty gases out of the quench car. An extraction duct connects the quench car to the gas transition car cooperably connected with a gas collection duct which also runs parallel to the coke ovens and which has an opening running its length.

  • Patent number: 4193904
Abstract: Methods are disclosed for the production of a water dispersible solution of acidic copolymer in water soluble polyol with controlled limited reaction between the copolymer and the polyol. This method comprises copolymerizing monoethylenically unsaturated monomers including a proportion of carboxyl-functional monomer providing dispersibility in water with the aid of a base and from 0.5%-5%, based on the total weight of monomers, of a monoethylenically unsaturated monomer carrying a reactive group selected from dicarboxylic acid anhdyride functionality and N-methylol functionality, the copolymerization being carried out in solution in a water soluble polyol. This copolymerization is preceded by or carried out under conditions causing substantially complete reaction between the anhydride or the N-methylol functionality in the reactive monomer, and the hydroxy groups in the polyol. Aqueous coating compositions are provided by dispersing the copolymer solution in water with the aid of a volatile base.

  • Patent number: 4193605
Abstract: Seals for the edge of a pivoted blade are provided in which an elongated strip of rigid material of U-shaped cross-section having side walls the interior of at least one of which carries resilient teeth pointed toward the closed portion of the U, and the open end of the U is narrowed to enhance the grip of the seal on the edge of a blade. The preferred sealing expedient employs a flap which extends to one side of the strip and which is dimensioned so that it does not reach the free end of the adjacent side wall. In one form of the seal, the side wall opposite the flap is extended to lock with a bend on the edge of the blade. In a damper, the seal is mounted on the edge remote from the air flow into the damper so that the flap is biased against the adjoining blade and the air pressure serves to strengthen the seal.
