  • Patent number: 4165698
Abstract: A novel attachment device is provided which can be used to secure two members together, such as a shelf and a support column, with a screw and nut and which does not require the use of a wrench to keep the nut from rotating during tightening of the screw with a screwdriver. A sheet metal shelf has a depending flange with a hole in a deformable region of sheet metal between two parallel vertical slots near the corner of the shelf. A shelf support column has a vertical U-shaped channel with a hole therein. To connect a shelf to a support column, the deformable region of the shelf flange is placed across the opening of the U-shaped channel in the support column with the holes in the flange and support column in alignment and then a screw is inserted therethrough. A nut is threadingly engaged on the screw to bear against one side of the deformable region of the shelf flange and to deform the region into the U-shaped channel of the support column.

  • Patent number: 4165943
Abstract: A gritless seal, a method for making the seal, and a method for forming a joint with the seal between overlapped ligature segments is provided. The inner gripping layer is brittle and has a hardness greater than that of the outer, ductile layer. In forming the joint, the seal is disposed about the overlapped ligature segments and is folded, squeezed, and/or crimped about the segments under pressure sufficient to deform the outer, ductile layer and produce fracture cracks in the inner gripping layer which present sharp edges to engage and hold the surfaces of the overlapping ligature segments. The interior of the sheet steel seal is case hardened by known cyaniding techniques.

  • Patent number: 4164915
Abstract: A method and apparatus for converting a gasoline engine to a diesel engine as disclosed herein. The method involves formation of a specifically designed piston that defines a reduced combustion chamber with a reduced chamber in the cylinder head of a conventional gasoline engine and replacing the spark plug with a fuel injector. The piston includes a circular cylinder having a substantially flat end with an integral dome extending from the flat end and having an area that is more than half the area of the cylinder. The dome has a combustion chamber defined therein and the combustion chamber is in communication with the periphery of the dome adjacent the flat end of the cylinder so that movement of the piston towards the cylinder head having a reduced chamber therein will first cause the dome to enter the reduced chamber and then have the gases from the cylinder bore forced into the reduced combustion chamber to create turbulence therein.

  • Patent number: 4164726
Abstract: An encapsulated plug-in electrically conducting component is provided for mounting in an electrical connector. In one embodiment an elongate conducting element is transversely disposed across two spaced-apart generally parallel terminal posts and is secured at each of its ends to near the end of each post. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the component functions as a fuse wherein the elongate conducting element is a generally cylindrical fuse wire and wherein a solid unitary body of electrically insulating material encapsulates the fuse wire and the ends of each of the blades that are connected to the fuse wire. In another embodiment, a center portion of fuse wire is encapsulated with a thermoplastic to form a cylindrical body. The projecting end of the wire are bent over against the ends of the body. Cylindrical end caps compressively engage the body and are maintained in electrical contact with the fuse wire by solder material within the end caps.

  • Patent number: 4163674
Abstract: A method for producing synthetic liquid absorbent granules to serve the same purposes as granules made from naturally occurring sorptive minerals such as absorbent clays. Water is mixed with powdered gypsum plaster in mixing apparatus and a paste or slurry condition results, with the volume of water relative to the plaster being varied to vary the bulk density and the absorption capacity characteristics of the ultimate granular product from each mix. The mix is taken from the apparatus and is allowed to set and harden in a form to be readily handled for crushing and sizing into desired screen mesh size granules, or the mix can be directly formed into pellets or granules so as to be allowed to set and harden and be correspondingly sized as the commercial product. Additives can be included in the mixing to vary the density and the absorption characteristics of the final absorbent granules.

The process utilizes an aqueous de-inking solution containing a mixture of certain surfactants, at least one surfactant being a water-soluble nonionic surfactant and the other surfactant being an oil-soluble nonionic surfactant. De-inking is carried out at a temperature in the range of about room temperature to about the boiling temperature of the solution by forming a slurry of the printed paper in the solution having a predetermined fibrous material solids content. The total nonionic surfactant concentration in the de-inking solution can be about 0.1 to about 5 weight percent, preferably about 0.5 to about 2.5 weight percent, based on the amount of fibrous material solids present. The weight ratio of the water-soluble surfactant to the oil-soluble surfactant in the mixture is in a range of about 6:1 to about 3:1, preferably about 4:1.
