  • Patent number: 6051858
Abstract: A transistor on a silicon substrate is covered by an insulating layer. A conducting plug passes through the insulating layer to the transistor drain. The bottom electrode of a ferroelectric capacitor that directly overlies the plug and drain contacts the plug. The ferroelectric layer is self-patterned and completely overlies the memory cell. A self-patterned sacrificial layer completely overlies the ferroelectric layer. The bottom electrode of the capacitor is completely enclosed by the ferroelectric layer, the insulating layer, and the conducting plug.

  • Patent number: 6052514
Abstract: A publication system is disclosed for coordinating access to publication data and related information. The publication data typically includes text, image data and layout data. The related information is stored in an item header file, as well as in a number of records. The system includes a network of computers including computers dedicated to performing certain tasks related to obtaining publication data and such related information. To coordinate the publication process, the ability to modify text contained in an item file is limited while certain of the records that include useful information related to the same item file are separately available for other network users. The system also generates watch records to notify users of the current status of, availability of, or to provide other information related to, a publication item of interest. Algorithms are also disclosed for facilitating the writing and editing of text for an article.

  • Patent number: 6044715
Abstract: An apparatus for measuring the flow rate of a fluid flowing through a minimal flow pipeline with a Coriolis effect mass flowmeter. The flowmeter has a single flow tube with two loops. The loops are connected by a cross-over section. A driver oscillates the loops and the phase difference between the ends of the loops is measured. The measured phase difference is then used to find the flow rate of the fluid. The flow tube is fixedly attached to an anchor which is, in turn, attached to a housing. The anchor separate the vibrating, dynamic portion of the flowmeter from the non-vibrating portion of the flowmeter.

  • Patent number: 6041815
Abstract: A system for indicating a position of a piston inside a cylinder of a control valve. The indicator of the present invention has an enclosed shaft which prevents the use of the shaft to tamper with the piston. The position of the shaft inside a shaft housing is indicated using a pair of magnets a first magnet is connected to a first end of the shaft and a second magnet is slidably mounted to an outside of the shaft housing. As the shaft moves the first magnet inside the housing, the second magnet moves outside the housing. The second magnet and shaft housing are enclosed in a transparent housing to prevent damage. The shaft housing has a threaded connector for connecting the shaft housing to a valve housing over the piston to prevent leakage through the shaft housing. A groove in a second end of the shaft receives teeth from a toothed retaining ring affix the shaft to the piston.

  • Patent number: 6038297
Abstract: The system for party line suppressed ringing access enables a service provider to access both a subscriber line and the equipment that is connected to this subscriber line. The present system makes use of the availability of party line communication apparatus, in the form of a subscriber line network interface that is equipped to interface to two lines: the subscriber line, and a telemetry party line. When an incoming call is identified as a suppressed ringing telemetry access call, the serving central office accesses the subscriber line via a suppressed ringing connection on the telemetry party line. The service provider can poll a plurality of the subscribers that are connected to the telemetry party line by means of distinctive signaling to poll each subscriber network interface seriatim.

  • Patent number: 6031754
Abstract: A ferroelectric integrated circuit memory includes a memory cell having a ferroelectric capacitor, one electrode of which is connected to a bit line through a transistor, and the other electrode of which is connected to a plate line. The bit line is also connected to system ground through a precharge transistor. In a read cycle, the precharge transistor remains on after the word line goes high connecting the capacitor to the bit line. At least a portion of the linear displacement current that flows to the bit line is drained off to ground via the precharge transistor, thereby increasing the switching voltage across the ferroelectric capacitor. The precharge transistor is turned off before or during the switching of the ferroelectric capacitor. The signal applied to the gate of the precharge transistor is boosted above the supply voltage of the memory to shorten the cycle time.

  • Patent number: 6028500
Abstract: The audible noise suppressor for planar magnetic devices functions to eliminate the audible noise generated by the normal operation of a planar magnetic device. This is accomplished by the use of a spacer device which functions to fill the gap between the ferrite core and the printed wiring board. The planar magnetic device comprises an E-shaped ferrite core comprising first second and middle legs, the three legs being inserted through mating holes formed in the printed wiring board. The windings of the planar magnetic device are deposited on the surface of the printed wiring board, in a predetermined pattern about the middle leg of the E-shaped ferrite core that protrudes through the corresponding hole in the printed wiring board. An I-shaped ferrite core is placed in position to span the first, second and middle legs of the E-shaped ferrite core. The E-shaped and I-shaped ferrite cores are held in place by the use of a clip that snap fits over the two ferrite cores.

  • Patent number: 6029195
Abstract: This invention relates to customized electronic identification of desirable objects, such as news articles, in an electronic media environment, and in particular to a system that automatically constructs both a "target profile" for each target object in the electronic media based, for example, on the frequency with which each word appears in an article relative to its overall frequency of use in all articles, as well as a "target profile interest summary" for each user, which target profile interest summary describes the user's interest level in various types of target objects. The system then evaluates the target profiles against the users' target profile interest summaries to generate a user-customized rank ordered listing of target objects most likely to be of interest to each user so that the user can select from among these potentially relevant target objects, which were automatically selected by this system from the plethora of target objects that are profiled on the electronic media.

  • Patent number: 6022669
Abstract: A first photosensitive liquid solution is applied to a substrate, patterned through exposure to radiation and development, and annealed to form a desired solid material, such as SrBi.sub.2 Ta.sub.2 O.sub.9, that is incorporated into a component of an integrated circuit Fabrication processes are designed protect the self-patterned solid material from conventional IC processing and to protect the conventional materials, such as silicon, from elements in the self-patterned solid material. In one embodiment, a layer of bismuth oxide is formed on the SrBi.sub.2 Ta.sub.2 O.sub.9 and a silicon oxide hole is etched to the bismuth oxide. The bismuth oxide protects the SrBi.sub.2 Ta.sub.2 O.sub.9 from the etchant, and is reduced by the etchant to bismuth. Any remaining bismuth oxide and much of the bismuth are vaporized in the anneal, and the remaining bismuth is incorporated into the SrBi.sub.2 Ta.sub.2 O.sub.9.

  • Patent number: 6021454
Abstract: The invention improves fault tolerance by physically separating computer systems that are connected by a Small Computer System Interface (SCSI). The invention includes a data transfer system that receives the data from the computer over a first SCSI bus and then releases the first SCSI bus. The data transfer system transfers the data within the data transfer system over a non-SCSI connection, such as a Fiber Channel link. The data transfer system then transfers the data to the disk drive over a second SCSI bus. The data transfer system releases the first SCSI bus before transferring data over the second SCSI bus. Thus, the first SCSI bus and the second SCSI bus are not reserved at the same time for the data transfer. The data transfer system eliminates deadlock because the simultaneous use of both SCSI buses is not required.

  • Patent number: 6012123
Abstract: An external I/O controller system between a host system and a Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) array, having a processor complex for coordinating RAID parity write operations to a member disk in a RAID array, and a cache memory complex that asynchronously executes the RAID parity write operation independent of the processor complex and any processor complex resources.
