    Abstract: The system for direct suppressed ringing access of a subscriber line enables the service provider to access subscriber lines from any location, as long as the incoming call is identified and authenticated as a suppressed ringing access call. The central office switch can maintain a list of predefined line numbers that are used by an authorized service provider to perform the suppressed ringing access function. Thus, a call origination on one of these lines is automatically validated as a suppressed ringing connection call. Alternatively, the suppressed ringing connection is requested by the inclusion of a predefined code in the dial string and the central office switch automatically authenticates the identity of the service provider.

    Abstract: The fire suppressant foam generation and application apparatus comprises a backpack mounted unit that produces a low moisture content fire suppressant foam for use in fire fighting applications. This apparatus draws fire suppressant foam concentrate from a reservoir mounted on the backpack and injects pressurized gas into the flow of the fire fighting foam concentrate to create the fire suppressant foam. The pressurized gas drives the fire suppressant foam through a delivery apparatus where the fire suppressant foam is agitated as it passes through the delivery apparatus to expand the foam and reduce the moisture content. A pressurized gas operated pump can be used to actively draw the water/foam mixture from a supply tank and supply it under pressure to the delivery apparatus, which can be a hose that is equipped with a nozzle.

    Abstract: The automated library system contains multiple independent robots for concurrently manipulating multiple media cartridges. The library system comprises a two-dimensional array that contains media cartridge storage cells and media cartridge players. A system of rails is used to guide robotic pods through all of the locations in the array, which eliminates the need for any steering or guide mechanism on board the robotic pods, resulting in a reduction in the mass of the robotic pods. The rail system also constrains the movement of the robotic pods into horizontal and vertical movements, thereby simplifying the control algorithms for collision avoidance that are required by a typical random moveable object handling system based on horizontal, vertical and diagonal degrees of freedom. The robotic pods contain a moveable carriage that is capable of transporting robotic components, such as media cartridge pickers, bar code reading devices, and other task oriented sub-modules, in the storage library rail system.

The host device then either transmits an acknowledge signal or a busy signal. The disk drive controller does not release the data block unless an acknowledge signal has been received.

    Abstract: A ferroelectric memory includes memory cells comprising a transistor having a source/drain, a ferroelectric capacitor having a first electrode and a second electrode. A plate line is connected to each of the second electrodes. In each memory cell, the first electrode is connected to the source/drain of the transistor to create a node that is isolated when the transistor is off. A shunt system directly electrically connects the isolated nodes of a pair of memory cells at a predetermined time to essentially equalize the voltages on the nodes. The shunt may be a Schottky diode, a resistor, and a pair of back-to-back diodes, or a transistor. In the embodiment in which the shunt is a transistor, the shunt line connected to the shunt transistor gate is boosted, there is a shunt transistor connecting each isolated node in a portion of the memory to the adjacent isolated node, and every eight to thirty-two isolated nodes, another shunt transistor connects the chain of isolated nodes to the plate line.

    Abstract: The system for wireless communication connection handoff service addresses the CDMA radio congestion problem from the mobile switching center point of view, thereby providing a unified approach to the problem of access failures for CDMA wireless communication service. In operation, the mobile subscriber station forms a message and forwards it to the mobile switching center to indicate the signal strength of the various base stations that have responded to the access probe. The mobile switching center saves this data for later use when the mobile subscriber station moves out of range of the initially selected base station. The mobile switching center reviews the stored data and, if a CIC is available to one of the identified base stations, the channel is allocated and the stored data is flushed. Thus, the need for another probe sequence is avoided and the initially provided base station signal strength data is reused to process a call handoff.

    Abstract: The reaction force decoupling system, as implemented in a tape drive, reduces the motion that is coupled back into the tape cartridge from the reaction force that is generated by the operation of the read/write head actuator. The read/write head actuator consists of a magnet assembly which produces a large magnetic field in an annular gap and a coil of wire which operates freely in the magnetic field of the gap. The magnet assembly is mounted to the base of the drive and the coil is attached to the read/write head carriage. When current is applied to the coil, a force is produced between the coil and the magnet assembly to move the read/write head carriage. The magnet assembly is disconnected from the base of the drive and mounted on dual flexures arranged in a four bar linkage parallel guide arrangement. The reaction forces that are generated by the operation of the read/write head actuator must deflect the flexures to apply a load to the base of the drive.

    Abstract: A very sensitive particle distribution probe uses special processing including a modified Twomey/Chahine iterative convergence technique and a specially constructed sample cell to obtain particle size distribution measurements from optically dense slurries, such as the slurries used in the semiconductor industry for chemical mechanical planarization. Spectral transmission data is taken over the spectral range of 0.20-2.5 microns, utilizing specially constructed, chemically resistant sample cells of 50-250 microns thickness, and miniature, fixed grating, linear detector array spectrometers. At wavelengths greater than 1 micron, the preferred design utilizes InGaAs linear detector arrays. An ultrasonic disrupter can be employed to breakup harmless soft agglomerates. In addition to direct particle size distribution measurement, the invention described here could be used to detect other fundamental causes of slurry degradation, such as foaming and jelling.

The dielectric compound has a lower dielectric constant than the ferroelectric compound. There is a concentration gradient of the ferroelectric compound in the thin film. In a second basic embodiment, the FGM thin film is a functional gradient ferroelectric (“FGF”), in which compositional gradients of ferroelectric compounds result in unconventional hysteresis behavior. The unconventional hysteresis behavior of FGF thin films is elated to an enlarged memory window in ferroelectric FET memories. FGM thin films are preferably formed using a liquid source MOD methods, preferably a multisource CVD method.
